BMW Motorrad

Mark you calendar! The new generation 2027 BMW S 1000 RR will be revealed on 23 May, 7pm CEST (1am, 24 May in Malaysia). BMW Motorrad has just released a teaser image in their social media platform ahead of the launch.

The teaser image shows a bike profiled against a black and gray background, and we can just make out the silhouette of an S 1000 RR. Apparent are the top of a large windscreen, split fuel tank, seat, and tail unit. You should also be able to pick out the large front winglets, too.

Anyway, will there be a performance enhancement? The current inline-four-cylinder engine produces 209 hp and 112.6 Nm. It is not the most powerful among its peers (on paper anyway), so upping its maximum power may also benefit the bike in World Superbike competition.

2025 BMW S 1000 RR

Apart from the engine, BMW had used a prototype and unhomologated chassis when they won the WSBK crown in 2024 as part of the championship’s concessions. However, had to revert to the roadgoing S 1000 RR frame (as per WSBK rules), only to see factory rider and champion Toprak Razgatlıoğlu complaining almost every weekend. Thus a new frame could well be in the works, too.

The reveal should be for the base S 1000 RR variant, while the racing homologation M 1000 RR ought to follow a year after.

In another sensational rumour or news – depending on if it goes through – in the KTM saga, BMW is said to be interested in buying KTM.

The news was posted by an Austrian business media oe24, saying that they learned from an insider familiar with KTM’s restructuring. Creditors are set to vote on KTM AG’s future later today (25th February) at 9:00 A.M. Austrian time (4:00 P.M. Malaysian time). The insider also told oe24 that Dr. Peter Vogl, who is the insolvency administrator, “has a preference for a specific buyer, namely BMW Motorrad.”

“At the settlement meeting on Tuesday, BMW Motorrad intends to step in as an investor and continue the KTM brand,” he further added.

The insider had also claimed that Oberbank is the party pushing BMW Motorrad to acquire KTM. “Their CEO, Franz Gasselsberger, has strong ties to the BMW Group, as the Oberbank is also the house bank for the BMW engine plant in Steyr.

However, taking the BMW route would be disastrous for KTM’s 4,500 employees as they could be laid off by end-2025. It was said that BMW will want to move KTM’s research and development department to Munich, Germany, while production will move completely to India.

Additionally, KTM’s present suppliers in Austria will also lose out if the deal with BMW works out as the latter would definitely resort to their own suppliers. Hence, there is concern that there will be mass bankruptcies in Austria.

If that is not bad enough, BMW’s takeover would mean that the Austrian taxpayers will have to shoulder €225 million as the country’s insolvency burden equalisation fund pays for for the laid off workers.

On the other hand, BMW’s buyout will see BMW Motorrad’s MotoGP plans may be fast-tracked.

BMW Motorrad sales broke records again in 2024, with the German marque claiming to sell a total of 210,408 new bikes.

Markus Flasch, head of BMW Motorrad, said, “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our customers and community around the world for the tremendous trust they have placed in us once again in 2024. With the strongest sales result in company history, BMW Motorrad remarkably claims the 1st Place in the global Premium Motorcycle segment. Our market leadership in numerous segments and markets in based on our claim to innovation leadership, our highly attractive product offering as well as the consistent strategic focus on brand strength.
