BMW Motorrad

  • The US National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) published a list of 2020 BMW motorcycles and stirred some intrigue.

  • A number of popular models are omitted from the list.

  • They include the S 1000 XR, R nine T Urban G/S and the C 650 scooter.

The US National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) published a list of 2020 BMW motorcycles and stirred some intrigue.

The NHTSA compiles and list the models of motorcycles homologated for the American market in the coming year. But BMW Motorrad’s list seems to hint at upcoming models.

That’s because missing from the list is the S 1000 XR. It may not be seen much on Malaysia roads as the R 1200 GS Adventure and R 1200 GS (soon R 1250 GSA and R 1250 GS) are the most popular models. In America, however, the S 1000 XR is one of the most popular.

One way of seeing it is because the new S 1000 RR superbike has a new engine equipped with ShiftCam variable valve timing technology. As such, the new engine is expected to be grafted to a new S 1000 XR.

However, the naked sport S 1000 R remains on the list and unchanged for 2020. Will there be a new ShiftCam model? You can bet so but maybe for 2021. Or BMW could working on the bike right now and unveil it at Intermot or EICMA later this year.

Other models missing are the F 800 GT sport-tourer and F 800 R roadster. This was expected with the debut of the F 850 GS and F 850 GS Adventure. The two bikes have a new engine with revised firing order, besides being completely new from ground up. Rumours are still surrounding the 9Cento concept on whether it will turn out to be the new F 850 GT or F 850 XR. If there is an F 850 GT/XR, there will definitely be a new F 850 R.

But the omission of the R nine T Urban G/S couldn’t be explained sufficiently. Will the new 1800cc Boxer engine make an appearance in a new Urban G/S-like model?

The C 650 Sport and C Evolution Urban Mobility models (i.e. scooters) are also missing. It’s understandable that the American market doesn’t like scooters.

Anyway, 2020 will be a big year for all manufacturers with the advent of the Euro 5 emission standard. It’s going to be hectic at the Tokyo Motorshow, Intermot and EICMA.

  • BMW Motorrad Vision DC Concept is BMW’s electric bike concept.

  • It mimics the current Boxer’s cylinders.

  • There are also other styling elements of current BMWs.

Yes, BMW Motorrad makes inline-Four engine models without having the cylinders jutting out into the air stream these days. But their true identity remains the Boxer engine, as much as their blue propeller badge. Check out this BMW Motorrad Vision DC Concept.

But then there’s not horizontally-opposed electric motor. So, what do you do to maintain that Boxer identity? Create an illusion, of course.

BMW says that the “heads” direct air into the battery pack’s cells to assist cooling. Yes, battery packs do need cooling, hence most electric bikes being liquid-cooled.

But the truth is BMW Motorrad wants to keep its Boxer identity, just like its sacrilege for Harley-Davidson to stop producing 45Big V-Twins. We don’t know how BMW fans will receive it, but as internal combustion engines are phased out over the years, this design will probably take hold for future generations.

Think of the BMW Motorrad Vision DC Concept as the modern-retro electric bike of the future and you’re probably there.

Anyhow, the “Boxer” isn’t the only styling element that identifies the bike as a BMW. Check out the single-sided swingarm, the Hossack-style girder “forks,” the transmission box-like battery pack and motor casing.

  • It will push off on 21 August and end on 24 October in Paris, France.

  • There is a total of 12 bikes, supported by 4x4s.

How’s this for an epic motorcycle adventure? The Trans-Mongolia 2019 adventure will cover 20,000 kilometres over 65 days through 11 countries.

The adventure is organized by the group called 4×4 World Explorer which consists of hardcore adventure riders and 4×4 drivers. They’ve organized the Trans-Andes, Trans-Amazon, among others in the past.

The upcoming ride which will begin on 21st August 2019 will ride through Thailand, Laos, and China before reaching Mongolia, hence the name. However, instead of turning back once they reach the country, the group will continue onwards through southern Russia (circumventing the Central Asian countries), Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany and finally ending in Paris, France on 24th October.

The bikes and 4x4s will then be shipped back to Malaysia.

Expedition Leader, Mr. Thomas Foo presented some of the details during the launch at the Explorer Outfitter outlet in Publika, Kuala Lumpur.

“It is like seeing seven different worlds in one ride,” he said. The riders will be supported by a number of 4x4s.

The 12 motorcycles are the BMW G 310 GS, sponsored by Tian Siang Motorrad in Ipoh, Perak. While they don’t seem much to some out there, the small capacity, single-cylinder bike is reliable and tough enough to stand up to the challenges during the trip. But in case anything breaks, it’s an easy fix compared to more complex models. Besides that, the lack of weight will soon be the rider’s best friend when the going gets tough. Would you prefer to ride on through or wrestle with a heavy bike? That’s why almost all world travelers including Anita Yusof opt for simple, lightweight bikes.

GIVI Asia Sdn. Bhd. also played their part by sponsoring touring equipment to the riders. It’s a huge list but here are some of them: X.01 Tourer adventure helmet, B32 Bold Advance top box, PWB02 waterproof waist pouch, CRS02.AX Comfort rain suit, VEST02 high-visibility vest, and a new, taller windscreen. GIVI Asia Managing Director Mr. Oh Hai Swee and Marketing Manager Sam Sharman were present during the presentation.

The Trans-Mongolia adventure will be flagged off on 21st August in Putrajaya.

  • BMW Motorrad are planning to debut a whole cruiser range this year.

  • They showed off the R18 Concept as a precursor.

  • The new bikes should be powered by a new 1800cc Boxer engine.

The BMW Motorrad cruiser range is set to debut this year.

The Bavarian manufacturer has already provided the new 1800cc Boxer engine to Custom Works Zon and Revival Cycles to build custom motorcycles around it, but they had not built their own motorcycle during that time.

But BMW now shows off the R18 Concept which was designed and built in-house. They are keen to entice cruiser and custom fans to think German, rather than American.

The R18 Concept harks back to the 1936 R5. Running on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, the bike is stripped of superfluous parts, leaving a pure motorcycle. Some nice touches are the chromed cylinder head covers, chromed R18 badge on the engine’s transmission case, final drive shaft, teardrop tank, pinstriped fork covers, cantilever rear shock and chromed fishtail exhausts, among others.

The frame takes the appearance of the R5’s “hardtail” but there’s actually a working rear frame for the rear wheel. (Think Triumph Bonneville Bobber.)

“This bike is not about being the fastest,” says Edgar Heinrich, BMW Motorrad Head of Design. “This bike is about making an analogue statement in a digital age. BMW has a rich history of iconic motorcycles and they bear the same design characteristics. We believe that this can still work well today, together with current technology.”

Will this spark another cruiser revolution in Malaysia? We certainly hope so.

TVS Apache 310RR

Meskipun TVS baharu sahaja melancarkan model Apache RR310 namun ia gagal mencapai sasaran penjualan.

  • A team from the Czech Technical University stuffed a BMW S 1000 RR engine into a UL-39 light aircraft.

  • It propels the 350kg plane to 290 km/h.

  • Skyleader Aircraft is now selling the plane.

We sometimes get the sensation of flying too low especially when riding fast bikes such as the BMW S 1000 RR.

Why not? Snapping the throttle open from 80 km/h in sixth gear had us seeing more than 200 km/h in a jiffy, while the scenery flew by in multi-coloured ribbons.

But now, thanks to a team from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University and their collaborators LA Composite and Zall Jihlavan Airplanes, the S 100 RR takes flight. Well, the engine anyway.

The UL-39 Alb is a replica of the original L-39 Albatross flown by the Czechoslovak Air Force in the 70s. However, the team swapped out the Ivchenko Al-25 jet engine with the previous generation’s BMW S 1000 RR inline-Four which produces 193 bhp.

The engine is placed in a duct and drives multiple blades, hence called a “ducted fan jet.”

For your knowledge, a “true” jet engine ignites fuel in nozzles at high pressures at the back of the engine. The combustion expands gases which blast out the back of the engine, driving the turbine blades. The turbine blades are mounted to a shaft which the compressor blades are mounted to at the front of the engine (you can see them when you board a passenger aircraft). The compressor draws in and compresses the air for combustion, creating thrust which propels the aircraft forward.

The S 1000 RR engine, on the other hand, drives compressor blades at the front like a propeller plane. But since the air is ducted, the fans create a higher pressure than chopping at air in the open.

The UL-39 is made mostly from carbon fibre and weighs just 350 kg and has a top speed of 290 km/h for up to a 547km range. It carries two occupants.

The plane is now part of the Skyleader Aircraft line-up. The company has been producing light aircraft since the 1990s.
