New rumours have emerged in Japan suggesting that a three-cylinder fully-faired sportsbike based on the Yamaha MT-09 is set to arrive in 2024.

  • Japanese publication, Autoby claimed that Yamaha to release the R9 in 2024.
  • The R9 will feature the same CP3 engine found in the MT-09.

The rumour has been ongoing since the introduction of the R7 in 2022, but the demise of the road-legal R6 is what initiated the demand for a fully-faired machine.

The arrival of the R9 was also handed to us by Yamaha’s trademark application of the R9 nameplate, suggesting that a CP3-wielding sportsbike is on its way.

However, the latest report from the Japanese publication, Autoby suggests that the motorcycle will arrive in the lineup in 2024.

Accompanying the report is a set of render images explaining how the R9 could turn out.

As expected, the upcoming R9 will likely borrow much of its features from the MT-09, including the aluminium beam frame and swingarm.

The R9 is also likely equipped with the same suspension setup and braking components as the MT-09.

Also likely to be carried over is the full-colour TFT instrument cluster and electronic package.

Similar to the MT-09, the R9 is expected to make 117hp @ 10,000rpm and 93Nm @ 7,000rpm.

According to Autoby, the R9 is set for release in 2024, with the bike making its first appearance at EICMA 2023.

Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) announced new visuals for the 2023 Yamaha Ego Avantiz.

  • Yamaha updated the Ego Avantiz scooter with new paint job.
  • The 2023 Ego Avantiz registered an increase in pricing for Malaysian market.

The 125cc compact scooter is now available in three exciting colours; Grey, Cyan and Red.

The updated model will be available at all Yamaha-authorised dealerships from 22 December 2022 (today) with an updated selling price of RM5,998

Nevertheless, no changes are made to the Euro4-compliant engine that continues to make 9.3hp @ 8,000rpm and 9.6Nm @ 5,500rpm.

A self-balancing motorcycle is a technology that several motorcycle manufacturers have been working on in the last few years.

  • Yamaha developing Advanced Motorcycle Stability Assist System for road-legal machines.
  • AMSAS is regarded as a more relevant approached compared to Motobot and Motodroid system introduced in 2017.

Brands like Harley-Davidson, BMW, and Honda are all reportedly working on robotic technology.

However, Yamaha is the one brand pushing for innovation, beginning with the project Motobot, announced in 2015 before it was superseded by Motodroid two years later.

However, the Motobot and Motodroid have yet to make significant progress, until now.

In the latest development, Yamaha provides a glimpse into a new self-balancing bike that could soon make its way to production.

The standard-looking Yamaha R3 features an innovative self-balancing system called Advanced Motorcycle Stability Assist System.

Unlike the Motobot and Motodroid, the AMSAS system is bolted directly onto the R3 chassis. It features a six-axis inertial measurement platform that offers self-stabilisation at speeds below 5km/h.

Interestingly, the system works while the rider sits on the saddle but with no hands on the handlebars.

According to Yamaha, 70 per cent of bike crashes occur within two seconds after the initial moment of cause, allowing zero time window for riders to react to avoid a collision. This is where AMSAS will play a significant role in saving the day.

However, it remains to be seen whether the technology will find its way to street bikes soon.

Yamaha released an all-new scooter specific to the Taiwanese market called the Augur.

  • Yamaha Augur is the latest compact scooter to be made available in Taiwan.
  • Features the tried-and-test Yamaha’s 155cc single-cylinder engine with VVA.

At a glance, the 155cc scooter is the most futuristic-looking model manufactured by the Japanese manufacturer in recent years.

Interestingly, the Augur 155 also packs some tasty features, including a 4.3-inch TFT instrument display with smartphone connectivity, traction control and ABS.

However, the centrepiece has to be its radical design, highlighted by its angular section, creating a never-before-seen aesthetic.

At the front, the Augur gets an arrow shape headlamp that also features the nifty Y-LLA (Yamaha Lean Light Assist) or cornering lights.

What’s more extraordinary is that the user can change the LED headlight colour from bright white to warm white depending on weather conditions.

Despite the modern touch, Yamaha still retains the typical scooter functionality, including a wide saddle for comfortable riding, a flat floorboard and ample under-seat storage.

Powering the Augur is the same 155cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, and fuel-injected engine found in the NMax 155 and NVX 155.

Yamaha kickstart its 2023 motorcycle range with the new radar-enabled Tracer 9 GT+.

  • The Tracer 9 GT+ is the new flagship for the Tracer 9 family for 2023.
  • The Tracer 9 GT+ is the first Yamaha to feature Adaptive Cruise Control and Unified-Braking System.

The Iwata manufacturer brings a wide range of updated model for 2023 including the updated Niken GT, Tracer 7 and Tracer 7 GT. However, by far the most significant is the introduction of the new Tracer 9 GT+.

Described as “the most technologically advanced Yamaha motorcycle ever built,” the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ takes the Japanese marquee sports tourer range to a greater height thanks to new added technology and features.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Perhaps the most fundamental addition to the Tracer 9 GT+ is the new radar-guided Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that is introduced for the first time on a Yamaha.

The ACC – when activated – keeps a constant distance between the bike and the front vehicle. In addition the ACC is also integrated with the engine braking control that will engaged in the event of deceleration.

Yamaha also claimed that the ACC will also adjust the KADS (KYB Actimatic Damper System) to optimise rider and passenger comfort.

In addition, the ACC also utilise cornering assist and passing assist.

Third-generation quickshifter

The Tracer 9 GT+ is the first Yamaha to equipped with a third generation quickshifter. The QS is integrated with the ACC hence allowing the rider to change gear while the ACC is turned on.

Unified-Braking System (UBS)

Interestingly, the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ is the first motorcycle to feature UBS which is only enable when Brake Control (BC) is active.

The UBS features brake assist, front and rear brake assistance and cornering brake control. All of the aforementioned features works on the event of collision, deceleration and while cornering to prevent from sliding.

7-inch TFT Instrument Cluster

Elsewhere, the Tracer 9 GT+ is also equipped with Yamaha’s top of the range 7-inch TFT instrument display that features Garmin navigation system and smartphone connectivity.

Yamaha has updated its popular middleweight adventure motorcycle, the Tenere 700and Tenere 700 Rally Edition for 2023.

  • The 2023 Tenere 700 and Tenere 700 Rally Edition features a new dash and electronic package.
  • The Tenere 700 is powered by Yamaha’s high-torque CP2 engine.

The Tenere 700 has continued to be a hit among adventure riders since its introduction in 2019, with the bike’s success contributed by its off-road capability as well as excellent value for money compared to the rest of its competitors.

What’s new?

Riders will appreciate the new instrumentation that comes in the form of a 5-inch TFT colour display replacing the outdated LCD digital dash.

The new dash also features smartphone connectivity that can be connected to a smartphone which feeds incoming calls, emails and text messages.

The new display also allows riders to link it to the Yamaha My Ride app.

Other notable updates include pre-wiring for a quickshifiter, USB port, redesigned brake lever and LED turn signal.

Electronically, the 2023 Tenere 700 gets new and improved three switchable ABS modes; ON, OFF and REAR OFF.

Yamaha’s popular maxi-scooter, the Yamaha XMAX, has finally received a significant overhaul for 2023.

  • 2023 Yamaha XMAX gets a new TFT screen and adjustable windshield.
  • The Yamaha XMAX is available in two variants in Europe, the 125 and 300.

First introduced in 2006, the Yamaha XMAX and its bigger sibling, the TMAX, have become two of the world’s best-selling scooters, with more than 720,000 units sold between the pair.

For 2023, the Yamaha XMAX gets an all-new 4.2-inch TFT instrument display complete with a Garmin navigation system similar to the TMAX.

Yamaha also revised the handling for better riding comfort and enhanced functionality.

In addition, the 2023 XMAX features a bolder impression thanks to a sharper front end, headlined by an aggressive new ‘X’ shaped headlight.

The same ‘X’ theme can also be seen at the back when the tail light is on.

Available in two variants, 125 and 300 in Europe – 250cc in Malaysia – the XMAX gets slimmer and more angular fairing designed.

This time, the XMAX also gets the Tech Max trim similar to the TMAX, which features a leather-style seat, aluminium footplates, keyless ignition and traction control.

Yamaha also treated the body parts with a special semi-metallic gloss finish.

Expect the new XMAX – with a 250cc engine configuration – to make its way to Malaysia soon.

Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) introduced three new colours for the 2022 Yamaha Y16ZR.

  • The Yamaha Y16ZR remains as the only moped in its class to feature assist/slipper clutch.
  • Due to current economic situation, the 2022 Y16ZR is priced slightly higher than the previous model.

The Y16ZR now features in Glacier White, Phantom Neon & Flaming Silver and is already available at Yamaha’s authorized dealership across the nation with a new recommended price of RM11,118 a slight increased from the previous RM10,888.

Aside from the new visuals, the Yamaha Y16ZR continue to offer the same specifications including the same liquid-cooled 4-stroke, 4-valve, SOHC 155cc engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) capable of producing 17.7 hp@9,500 rpm and 14.4 Nm @ 8,000 rpm.

The Y16ZR is also the only motorcycle in its class that comes with an assist/slipper clutch which improves gear changing while reducing the probability of a clutch slip.

Although without Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), the Y16ZR packed with a 2-pot calliper at the front paired to a 245mm front disc.

HLYM also claimed the motorcycle can now achieve a range of 256km with a 5.4L fuel tank.

Other exciting features:

  • full LED lighting
  • negative-faced LCD digital panel
  • smart key function
  • 12V DC socket

Yamaha is set to celebrate the R1 legacy next year with the potent superbike reaching its 25-year anniversary.

  • The R1 is reaching its 25th birthday in 2023.
  • The 1000cc sportsbike could received major upgrade.

That said, rumours from Japan suggest the Iwata manufacturer is looking to roll out a significantly updated R1.

The R1 received its extensive overhaul in 2015 before Yamaha’s latest changes in 2019 seem to perform fairly well, with the superbike dominating the 2021 WorldSBK season.

While it may relatively outperform the Kawasaki ZX-10RR and Honda CBR1000RR-R, the R1 could be left behind after Ducati and BMW’s recent introduction of the new Panigale V4 R and M 1000 RR.

As both motorcycles make more than 200hp, the bi-crossplane 998cc 198hp might not be seen enough to go up against the Italian and German moniker at the WorldSBK.

That leaves Yamaha with a dilemma regarding how they should proceed with the R1.

However, a Japanese publication, Young-Machine, (yes, them again), reported that a heavily updated Yamaha R1 could be well underway.

Thanks to a new render by YM, the R1 might be getting a complete overhaul of bodywork and engine development.

Also, the R1 could get an all-new aerodynamic winglet and a higher peak power from its bi-crossplane engine.

Interestingly, YM also claimed that the next-gen R1 would feature a special edition retro white and red livery, complete with a 90s typeface.

Although the new development might seem too good to be true but knowing how accurate Young-Machine usually is, we might be seeing a new R1 soon enough.

Moreover, we are intrigued to find out how Yamaha plans to squeeze more power out of its inline-four-cylinder engine, which we think is already hitting its peak.

Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) recently launched the 2022 Yamaha TMax Tech Max maxi-scooter for the local market with a recommended selling price of RM74,998.

  • The Yamaha Tenere 700 could finally be introduced to the Malaysian market.
  • There is a considerable demand for middleweight adventure motorcycles in the country.

During the launch, HLYM also revealed their plans to introduce more big-capacity motorcycles in 2023.

While the exact models are not disclosed, an unnamed source told Paultan.org that HLYM realized that there is a surge in demand for an off-road capable motorcycle in the country.

That said, it could be a strong indicator that the Yamaha Tenere 700 could finally make its way to Malaysia soon.

Powering the Tenere 700 is Yamaha’s CP2 689cc parallel-twin engine, capable of producing 74hp and 67Nm.

Earlier this year, Yamaha updated the Tenere 700 range with a World Raid variant, carrying a massive upgrade, including a 23L twin-tank that can take the bike up to 470km of range.

Although there is no official confirmation regarding the Malaysian launch just yet, but reports suggest that it is highly likely that the Tenere 700 will soon find its way to our shores.

We expect that the Tenere 700 could price around the RM50k mark as the motorcycle is currently on sale in the Philippines and Thailand at RM51,900 and RM58,300, respectively.

The middleweight adventure bike was again the talk of the town as five of the overall top 20 finishers at the recently concluded Rimba Raid 2022 were riding onboard the Tenere 700.
