August 2014

If you have ever lived in a suburban area that was once a calm, peaceful place, that was once on the outskirts of the city and cheap enough for a fresh graduate to live in, and watched it fall prey to over development, you could somewhat guess how this feels.

Fast forward five years.

That oasis has suddenly turned into a daily orgy of trucks, cars, bikes, tractors, excavators, drilling machines, road dividers coupled with ever changing traffic flow. There’s some super fly VIP that lives nearby so every once in a while the cops and outriders come charging through standstill traffic, demanding their way through. Don’t act quick enough and suffer their wrath i.e., yells, finger pointing, stare downs, depending on how quickly you oblige. I can never seem to figure out where they want us to go when everything’s not moving.

Even the traffic lights are now just a suggestion, people stop and go whenever they want.

Sometimes, when I’m sitting on my Vespa at the front of the pack, I imagine carrying a Magnum and simply picking off anyone that beats the light. It has to be either them or me; I don’t think they care about me when they beat the red lights, so it’s every man for himself then. But it will forever be imagination.

Imagine then driving from The Curve to Sunway Giza, a distance of just three point something kilometres, and a journey that takes about five minutes at four in the morning when there’s no one else on the road. But during the day, it has taken me over an hour to get across that. Imagine the frustration.

The traffic is getting so bad these days that it’s simply unbearable anymore. Sure after spending a good amount of my adulthood stuck in traffic, I now have the patience level Buddha himself will be proud of, but there’s just too much time being wasted stuck in traffic. It’s unacceptable for some of us.

The MRT project is good and all, but it makes me wish that I could sleep and wake up in 2016, the year when construction is expected to end. The collateral damage is just too much to handle. And then you have to ride or drive under a beam that seems to be loosely hanging in the air, defying physics. People have died, and that is very very f**ked up.

I never had my car towed before, but I see plenty of bad days for people. And apparently you have to pay a hefty fine, go through the hassle of showing your “geran” (ownership papers), and deal with cocky tow truck drivers. It’s a risk that doesn’t make sense to me, so I rather take as long as it takes to look for a parking spot. And that takes a lot of time, sometimes. On the scooter, the world is your parking lot.

I have also grown fond of splitting lanes!

Drivers, I don’t know about the rest, but I am silently snickering at you as you sit stuck in traffic, Facebooking, making up, making out, texting, day dreaming, talking, arguing, reading. And yes, we lane-splitters also notice it when you’re touching yourself. Or when someone’s touching you.

It takes me 45 minutes to get to office when I drive. It takes 20 on the scooter.

You know when you buy a new car, amongst the many things to take into consideration is the cost of the road tax, and how much fuel it consumes? We Scooter people don’t do that.

RM2 for road tax, and RM10 for a full tank of petrol (Range: 150km) is, and I’m saying it with every inch of humility, negligible. I know and respect the fact that there are people for whom RM10 is a big deal.

But this is one of the reason’s why I bought a scooter, because it is cheap, convenient, quick, hassle free and it just makes so much more sense than a car in 2014 KL.

I also know that the weather in KL sucks, and there’s a lot of pollution, but it’s a small trade off. Something you will appreciate when you make it home in time to have a cup of coffee just as the sun is going down. There’s time to work out, have sex, a good dinner, read a book. There’s time for the good things in life.

Yes it’s dangerous, so car drivers here’s a personal plea; please, move to the right or left when you’re coming to a stop, just to make space for us to ride through. We are going to try to make our way around you anyway, so you might as well help rather than risking us swiping your side view mirrors.

When the red light appears, please stop. You don’t have two more seconds, it means stop! When motorcyclists see green, we go for it. What else do you expect us to do? Sit around and wait for someone to horn at us? It’s green, it means go! It’s red, it means stop! This is someone’s life we are talking about here.

You should thanks us motorcyclists actually. As of 2009, there are close to 10 million motorcyclists on Malaysian roads. Can you imagine if all of us lost our minds at the same time and went and bought cars instead? You’d be screwed! There will be too many cars on the road that we would all have to go back to riding horses. So, you’re welcome!

It has been about two months now that I have been ‘scooting’ about everywhere. When I bought it, I told myself that I would only ride it to the shops and where it was convenient. But it turns out, it is so convenient that it is difficult to justify driving the car anywhere, except for when it rains.

Sure there are nicer bikes out there that are just as convenient, but trust me when I say that a scooter is much better in urban conditions than having to balance a clutch, and having a big engine slowly burning your nuts.

But don’t believe what people say, scooters don’t get you the girls. So there’s still a need for cars. So there.

The Ducati 899 Panigale is not a new bike to the market, it was first launched last year, but at that time it was imported and cost RM108,888 (US$34,000). (more…)

MotoGP fans are in for some good news as Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is currently running a promotion for the Premier Roving Tickets for the 2014 Malaysian MotoGP happening this October.

2014 Ducati Scrambler vid

The third and last episode in the Ducati Scrambler “Franco & Elvira Story” is out; it finally shows the basic shape (though putty like) as Franco takes Elvira to the World Ducati Week.

If you had missed them, the videos – the plasticine protagonists of which were hand-made by three talented nineteen-years-olds from Bologna – tell an imaginative story of how the Scrambler Ducati ended up in the present day.

As the storyline goes, Franco, a man from 2078, is catapulted by a time machine (which somehow looks very similar to the Delorean from the Back To The Future movie) back to the Woodstock festival of August 1969 where he meets and falls in love with both Scrambler Ducati and Elvira.

They joyously elope on the bike, yet before the two can even kiss the time machine hurls them forwards to the present day, to 2014. Franco and Elvira find themselves directly in front of the fabulous “yellow container” – first visited by Ducati employees and then the enthusiasts who flocked to WDW 2014 – from which they exit astride the new Scrambler Ducati.

Unfortunately, it will be almost another two months before we get to see the actual bike when it is officially presented on 30th September during Intermot 2014 in Cologne, Germany. View the video below.

scout-2015-2

Last weekend was the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, for all of you who don’t know, its one of the biggest bike gathering in the world.
It started back in 1938 with mostly Harley owners but over the years especially now, there have been a good mixes of bikes at the event.

Its only fitting that Indian Motorcycles decided to reveal their latest bike, the 2015 Indian Scout at Sturgis. Apparently this is the first `to carry that name in 70 years.

The bike company had managed to retain much of the original looks but also modernise the machine for better performance and reliability.
The main challenge was to the rear shockers as they were set at a shallow angle in order to follow the sleek frame profile. A lot hours were put into it to make it work.

Power comes from a liquid-cooled 69-cubic-inch (1130.7cc) V-twin which they claim produces 100hp and 72lb-ft of torque at 5000rpm. Modern touches comes with a closed-loop fuel injection system and a ride-by-wire-throttle.

The seat is set at 25.3inch off the ground and the cast aluminium keeps things “light” at 253kg when wet.

First unit is going to roll out at the end of this year with four colours Thunder Black, Indian Motorcycle Red, Silver Smoke and Thunder Black Smoke. The target price is USD10,999 which is about USD8,000 than the bigger Chief.

In a surprising twist to the on-going saga between British rider Cal Crutchlow and the Ducati MotoGP team, the Italian team has officially announced that Crutchlow will be leaving the team at the end of this season.

Ducati Corse officially announced in a short communique that Crutchlow’s contract will be terminated ahead of time while his replacement will be Andrea Iannone.

With Andrea Dovizioso and Iannone confirmed for 2015, the Ducati Corse racing team will be an all-Italian team again after Rossi switched back to Yamaha.

Iannone previously raced for the Pramac Racing team.

The guys in FSR Technology are real teasers, last week they released a picture and some information on their FB page about a standalone programmable ecu called Tuneboss for the Yamaha FZ150i and Lagenda.

Yesterday they were at it again but this time even worst, posting a picture of the Tuneboss and an android phone next to it which had what looks like an app to connect to the Tuneboss wirelessly and thats it.

Now the boys are a bit tight lip about releasing more information than what they already have right now, before the actual launch which is in a few weeks. But luckily we have our ways to get more info, unconfirmed of course as its not directly form FSR Technology themselves but close enough. Never underestimate the power of “teh tarik”. You just have to love Malaysians, we’re so easy that way.

So far from what we can gather is that users can connect to the Tuneboss wirelessly to their android phone for wireless tuning capability, even the full tuning app on the pc will be using the same wireless connection. But not mentioned is what type of wireless which could eitherbe Bluetooth or wifi.

The phone app will have fuel, ignition, rpm limiter adjustment, including advanced diagnostics which means, theres no need to look at the silly blinking engine light like on the original factory diagnostic tool, it will tell you exactly what the problem is.

Thats it for now, or until FSR Technology do another teaser before the launch.

2015 Victory Magnum

Reports are out that Victory America had just launched its 2015 line-up which includes the 2015 Magnum. Just like the richly tasting chock covered vanilla ice cream, the Victory Magnum rolls out already brimming with the latest factory custom styling one can think off, just like the Cross Country but with more attitudes.

It starts with a 21inch front wheel handled by the ape hanger bar, super low seat (667mm off the ground) and all visually cascades down into the twin hard cases in the back.

2015-Magnums1

Power comes from the standard Victory engine line up, a 1731cc air-cooled V-twin producing about 90hp.

Cruise control and a 100 watt six-speaker system comes as standard and if that is still not enough there is an option to stick more speakers on the hard case saddlebags
