  • A recently unveiled Ducati Panigale V4 25th Anniversario 916 will be auctioned in support of Carlin Dunne’s family.

  • Dunne perished while contesting in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on a Ducati Streetfighter V4 Prototype.

  • Proceeds from the auction will be handed to Dunne’s family.

A recently unveiled Ducati Panigale V4 25th Anniversario 916 will be auctioned in support of the Carlin Dunne family.

As we reported earlier, Dunne had led Ducati’s assault on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb of the Streetfighter V4 Prototype when he tragically crashed and perished. The event had been used as publicity by Ducati to shore up support for the upcoming Streetfighter V4. The bike which Dunne rode was essentially a Panigale V4 stripped of its bodywork and attached with a straight handlebar.

A crowdfunding charity had been set up within days of his passing in order to support his family.

As such, proceeds from the auction of the bike will go to Dunne’s family. The bike will wear the racer’s #5 number plate.

Such an auction will also be initiated next month in honour of Nicky Hayden. The bike offered is a Panigale V4 S with special decals like those on the Desmosedici GP raced by the late rider.

The Ducati Panigale V4 25th Anniversary 916 celebrates 25 years of the iconic Ducati 916, the bike which turned the Italian brand into a household name and set the destiny of Ducati. It was also the bike which revolutionized the superbike segment.

  • Ducati confirmed that Danilo Petrucci will ride for the Ducati factory team in the 2020 MotoGP season.

  • The decision follows his consistent podium finishes and victory at Mugello.

  • Jack Miller will likely continue with Pramac Ducati.

Ducati confirmed that Danilo Petrucci will ride for the Ducati factory team in the 2020 MotoGP season, continuing his partnership with Andrea Dovizioso.

Petrucci did not have the expected start to the 2019 MotoGP season, hence rumours started circulating that Pramac Ducati rider Jack Miller may replace him for the 2020 season. Then everything took a 180-degree turn and Petrucci scored a victory at manufacturer’s home ground in Mugello. It was an emphatic first MotoGP win for the cheerful Italian.

It’s also a great thing for the team to continue with Petrucci’s services since continuity allows for easier development of the Desmosedici. As all riders ride differently, a new rider will only introduce a set of variables to the motorcycle’s development. And given MotoGP’s freeze of too many development throughout the season, the affair will turn into a difficult task.

Having Petrucci also opens up more funds for the factory and team. As reported by Asphalt and Rubber, Petrucci is earning between € 700,000 and € 1,000,000 per season, compared to the king’s ransom of € 12,500,000 paid to Jorge Lorenzo. That extra moolah could well be used for research and development, plus other things.

Jack Miller will like continue with his present team as well as Pecco Bagnaia. The duo will also receive the Desmosedici GP20 next year.

  • We’re used to accepting GrabFood delivery from riders on small bikes. But this rider uses a Ducati Hypermotard.

  • He’s not wrong to say he’s the fastest delivery rider!

  • Hopefully, we could get him to delivery before the fries become soggy.

We’re pretty used to using GrabFood delivery service by now. Similarly, we admire the dedication of the riders who brave Kuala Lumpur’s mad traffic, rain and shine to deliver hot food to us. But here’s a rider who delivers on Ducati Hypermotard.

We’re also used to seeing the guys (and gals) pull up on Yamaha 135 LC, Yamaha Y15ZR, Honda RS150 and so forth. This writer has personally encountered a small number of 200cc and 250cc bikes. But the Hypermotard is certainly different.

A GrabFood rider shared a video of himself delivering a few sticks of lemang to his customers recently on Twitter. @HerySevani had the trademark green “backpack” on the back of the Ducati.

He tweeted in Bahasa Malaysia, “The customer wanted lemang, so I bought leman. Don’t be afraid to place your orders with me for the fastest delivery.”

Well, of course he provides the fastest delivery, since the Hypermotard is made to slice and dice through the challenges thrown up by the city. His customers will have no problem hearing him arriving at their doorstep either, to the tune of a 90V-Twin. (Hope I can get him to deliver my order before the fries turn soggy.)

He also tweeted that he took the job as a part-timer to earn some petrol money for his bike.

  • KTM CEO Stefan Pierer is still adamant about buying the Ducati brand off the Volkswagen Group and has added Triumph Motorcycles to his list.

  • He wants to create a “unified European motorcycle brand.”

  • KTM is currently No. 4 and aims for No. 3.

KTM CEO Stefan Pierer is still adamant about buying the Ducati brand off Volkswagen AG and has added Triumph Motorcycles to his list.

That’s his ultimate view, but there’s a premise to the entire story.

KTM has just surpassed Harley-Davidson as the biggest motorcycle manufacturer outside Asia. The former sold 261,000 motorcycles in 2018, some 35,000 more than the Motor Company did. However, KTM only raked in USD 1.75 billion compared to Harley’s nearly USD 5 billion as the latter’s bikes were much more expensive.

Yet, KTM is still the fourth largest manufacturer in the world behind Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. Honda sold a whopping 20 million motorcycles last year, making even Yamaha’s 5.4 million look paltry.

KTM CEO Stefan Pierer – PHOTOGRAPHER: MICHAELA HANDREK-REHLE/BLOOMBERG

Pierer knows that the Japanese’s volume is due to the number of different types and models available in different countries. This was the reason why KTM linked up with Bajaj to produce smaller capacity motorcycles.

But the man doesn’t want to stop there and set a target of reaching 400,000 units by 2022 globally. That target ought to demote Kawasaki as the world’s third largest motorcycle manufacturer.

In that sense, he felt that he should buy Ducati and Triumph and uniting the three brands as a triumvirate to form “a united European motorcycle company.” In saying so, he mentioned Ducati and Triumph’s 2018 sales of 53,000 and 61,500, respectively. “We’re saving ourselves in Europe,” he added. He didn’t mention that BMW Motorrad sold 165,566 units, though. Triumph’s not for sale, definitely.

Will the orange brand get there?

  • A Ducati Streetfighter V4 teaser of its debut at the 2019 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) has appeared in the Ducati FB page.

  • The video ends with the messages “The gloves come off at Pikes Peak” and “Stay tuned June 13.”

  • Carlin Dunne is slated to ride a “Ducati Pikes Peak Prototipo” which heavily implies a Streetfighter V4 prototype.

A Ducati Streetfighter V4 teaser of its debut at the 2019 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) has appeared in the Ducati FB page. The video showed a few lines of a bike, before flashing to “The gloves come off at Pikes Peak” and instructing us to “Stay tuned June 13.”

Although the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb officially begins from 24th June with pre-race activities such as scrutineering, official practice and qualifying, the race proper begins on 30th June.

However, there are unsanctioned practices on 8th, 9th , 14th, 15th and 16th June for the competitors. Thus, the unveiling of the Streetfighter V4 happens on the eve of one of those tests.

Interestingly, the Streetfighter V4 isn’t found in the competitors’ listing. Instead, it’s described as “Ducati Pikes Peak Prototipo (prototype),” in the heavyweight category. Carlin Dunne who has won on Ducatis multiple times will ride the bike. Dunne also won last year on a Ducati Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak. However, his final time was 10 seconds off the record set by Chris Fillmore in 2018 on the KTM 1290 Super Duke R.

There exists beyond doubt that Ducati wants to not only retain the PPIHC crown but also set a new record. Indeed, a Streetfighter V4 prototype was spotted testing at a track last week.

The PPIHC is a 156-corner “track” up a hillside. The competitors (including cars, 4X4s, quads) start from sea level and wind their way up to the finish line at 4302.2 metres (14, 115 feet).

Superbikes were allowed a few years before but were subsequently banned due to a number of fatal crashes. “Motorcycles with one-piece, non-clip-on handlebars are allowed,” as the organizers put it.

So, stay tuned, indeed!

Andrea Dovizioso put in a fastest lap just 1.2 seconds off the fastest time in Race 1 of his DTM (Duetsche Tourenwagen Masters) debut at the Misano track, Italy.

It was Dovizioso’s one-off appearance in the German touring car championship, riving for the Audi Sport team. Ducati logos feature prominently on the car as Audi owns the Ducati brand.

“Desmo” Dovi finished a credible 12th position after working up the field from 15th. It was a commendable drive as he ended the race just one position behind his teammate Pietro Fittipaldi, who is also a Formula 1 test driver.

He has a chance to better the result in Race 2 today. The DTM series is a cut-throat racing series, featuring hard, no quarter given overtakes and ultra-competitive throughout. This is where German manufacturers battle it out for supremacy and bragging rights.

Dovizioso isn’t the first MotoGP rider to try his hands at auto racing. Fellow MotoGP competitors such as Valentino Rossi competes in rally racing annually. Other riders including Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo have also tested for auto racing teams.

The biggest challenge for two-wheel racers making the shift to four-wheels is usually about braking. As cars have four wheels that maintain contact to the tarmac at most times, brakes can be applied later and more aggressively compared to motorcycles. Another benefit of this is that racecars can carry much higher cornering speeds, too. Consequently, full-time riders need to concentrate more on breaking through this barrier.

  • A Ducati Streetfighter V4 prototype was spotted being tested on a racetrack.

  • Ducati is expected to field a Streetfighter V4 prototype at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

  • The new bike will launched at EICMA.

A Ducati Streetfighter V4 prototype was spotted being tested on a racetrack.

The mouth-watering prospect began when Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali hinted that there will be more bikes built on the new Desmosedici Stradale V4 platform.

The grainy photos shared DDG magazine shows a bike with intakes taken directly off the Panigale V4. The headlights are mounted on pods ala Triumph Street and Speed Triple. Moving back, notice the tailsection is identical to the superbike, as well. The exhaust pipes are underslung, unlike the previous Streetfighter 848 and 1098.

But what’s more important is the engine. Or more specifically, how much power will the engine produce. The current KTM 1290 Super Duke R’s LC8 V-Twin engine makes 178 hp and is touted as the “most powerful super naked.” In view of that, we guess the Streefighter’s engine will be tuned to regions of 190 hp. That’s 23 hp down from the Panigale V4 but 213 hp for a naked bike is ridiculous.

The Streetfighter V4 is expected to make its first public appearance at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb starting 30thJune.

It also ought to be officially launched at EICMA.

  • Jonathan Rea and Kawasaki finally ended Alvaro Bautista and Ducati’s WorldSBK 2019 winning streak.

  • Rea won in Race 1 at the Imola circuit in Italy.

  • Bautista finished second after winning the first ten races of the year.

Four-time and reigning WorldSBK champion Jonathan Rea and his Kawasaki team ended Alvaro Bautista and Ducati’s winning streak in Race 1 at Imola, Italy.

Bautista and Ducati have scored a perfect ten out of ten races in five rounds prior. However, Rea proved the spoiler when Bautista tried to adapt to the tricky Imola circuit. It was the latter’s first race there. Rea had been strong throughout the practice sessions only to be pipped by Bautista’s teammate Chaz Davies in Superpole for pole position.

Come race day, Rea took the lead as soon as the lights went out, but passed by Davies soon after. It looked like the pair was going to resume their hard battles and rivalry through the last few seasons. Unfortunately, Davies’s bike encountered a problem and forced the Welshman to retire. In so doing, he handed second place to Bautista.

A battle soon erupted behind them.

Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) sat in third, while Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team) fought up to 4thfrom 8thon the grid. Van der Mark’s teammate Alex Lowes followed in 5th, ahead of Rea’s teammate Leon Haslam. Independent rider Toprak Razgatlioglu (Turkish Purcetti Racing) moved in 7th.

At the front, Bautista had no answer to Rea’s pace. The Kawasaki man began to pull away at 0.7s per lap.

On a day of seeing front runners suffering bike problems, Tom Sykes’s BMW started to slow and eventually retired. At the same time, Lowes started to slip backwards.

With the final position suddenly available, van der Mark and Razgatlioglu battled tooth and nail. The pair swapped paint and traded blows on the penultimate lap to the stage of colliding twice. But it was the Turkish rider Razgatlioglu who presevered to cross the line in 3rd.

There was no problem for Rea, conversely. It was his eighth win at the track and 72ndin WorldSBK. It was Kawsaki’s 128thwin in the series.

Race 2 continues today at 8pm Malaysian local time.

Final results after Race 1:
  1. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK)
  2. Alvaro Bautista (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati)
  3. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Turkish Puccetti Racing)
  4. Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team)
  5. Leon Haslam (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK)
  6. Marco Melandri (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK)
  • Ducati posted a 5% increase in sales for the first quarter of 2019 vis-à-vis the same period in 2018.

  • The biggest selling segments were the Hypermotard/Multistrada and Scrambler.

  • The Supersport/Superbike category saw a large drop.

Ducati posted a 5% increase in sales for the first quarter of 2019 vis-à-vis the same period in 2018.

The number equals a total of 12,541 motorcycles compared to 11,949. That’s good news considering the global motorcycle sales slump.

However, the model which drove the sales was of a surprise. The Italian manufacturer had hoped the new Diavel 1260 will drive sales in 2019, but it was the new Hypermotard 950, instead. The Hyper’ contributed an 18.6% growth. Ducati grouped the Diavel and Monster in the same “naked” category which dropped by 1.13%. The Hypermotard is in the same category as the Multistrada, on the other hand.

The other contributor is the Scrambler line-up, which saw a 14.8% increase. Ducati shored up the yellow-bike family with a slew of new models for 2019.

As for the Supersport/Superbike category, it posted a 13.5% drop after the huge success of the Panigale V4’s success in 2018.

The manufacturer is yet to launch further 2019 models. We shall see how these will do by the first half of the year.

  • Ducati has tied up with Chinese electric scooter and motorcycle manufacturer Vmoto.

  • The scooters will be rebranded as licensed products.

  • It will be a luxury version of the current Super Soco CUx scooter.

Ducati has tied up with Chinese electric scooter and motorcycle manufacturer Vmoto. The deal should see a Ducati-branded electric scooter before the launch of a fully-electric Ducati motorcycle.

The deal licenses Vmoto to build Ducati-branded Super Soco CUx electric scooters as “official products under the license of Ducati.” Soco is a sub-brand of Vmoto.

However, as expected, the scooters will not be any run-of-the-mill bikes. Instead, these will be a special luxury version of the CUx and sold at premium prices.

The deal also says that Vmoto will distribute the scooters to their distribution network. Ducati, on the other hand, will carry out the marketing duties.

If the upcoming scooter is based on the CUx, the performance figures ought to remain the same. Currently, the 2019 model uses a 3.75hp Bosch hub motor which gives it a top speed of 45 km/h. That isn’t a lot, of course, but it is applicable to the speed limit in heavily urbanized areas.

Its 1.8 kWh battery pack gives it a range of up to 75km. Other novel features include a built-in forward-facing camera for safety and sharing to social media purposes.

We are a little surprised by Ducati’s move, frankly. But the Italian manufacturer has also worked with a bicycle manufacturer and marketing the bike. Perhaps they are looking at a holistic approach, rather than just sticking to the big bike market only.

We shall see what they have in their sleeves by Intermot and EICMA this year.
