Aprilia Shiver 900

The Gilera brand, part of the Piaggio Group, has a rich history but has been somewhat overlooked compared to its sister companies like Moto Guzzi and Aprilia. However, there’s a new effort to revive Gilera in China through a joint venture with Zongshen Piaggio Foshan. This collaboration aims to bring back the Gilera name on a range of motorcycles.

  • Italian designer Oberdan Bezzi created this Aprilia Tuareg 900 concept.

  • The concept is based on the Shiver 900/Dorsoduro 900 the platform.

  • Aprilia is presently without a dual-sport model.

Aprilia is one manufacturer that’s missing a dual-sport model. That’s why Italian designer Obedan Bezzi created this Aprilia Tuareg 900 concept.

Aprilia used to boast a complete line-up in the catalogue, from 125cc right up 1000cc superbikes. But they’ve got only four volume production models now, all sport-based. Let’s see, there’s the Shiver 900 and Dorsoduro 900, besides the Tuono V4 1100 and RSV4 1100.

The Shiver 900 is upgraded from the Shiver 750 which was in the market for an incredible 15 years. Part of its longevity was its simplicity of operations and reliability. Yes, the Shiver 750 was one of the most reliable big bikes. It fills the role of a naked sportbike truly well.

However, Bezzi thinks it could be developed into a DP, merely by sticking to its current platform and adding long-travel suspension to it. A beautifully curvy bodywork completes the package.

The designer christened his creation aptly as the “Tuareg” after the semi-nomadic people who live in the Sahara Desert. Saying that the bike is fixes your wanderlust.

The 900cc V-Twin produces 93 horsepower and 89.5 Nm of torque, putting it squarely as a contender in the middleweight dual-sport segment. Its competition are the sublime Tiger 800, new BMW F 850 GS, and newer KTM 790 Adventure. So, his concept really does make sense.

So, will Aprilia take this as a cue? Another marque under the Piaggio umbrella, Moto Guzzi certainly did so with the V85 TT, after all.

(more…)

  • Didi Resources Sdn. Bhd. launched the 2019 Aprilia Shiver 900 today.

  • It features a number of redesigns, mechanical and electronic updates.

  • It also shares a number of components with the RSV4 and Tuono V4 1100.

Didi Resources Sdn. Bhd. launched the 2019 Aprilia Shiver 900 today.

The Shiver 900 marks the first model launched by the new Aprilia Malaysia, since their confirmation as the new distributor, their inaugural track day and opening of a new service centre at The Gasket Alley located in Petaling Jaya. Mr. Goh Kian Sin and Mr. Juan Chow Wee, the Managing Director and General Manager of Didi Resources Sdn. Bhd., respectively, unveiled the new bike.

Being a naked standard, the Shiver 900 should open the door to more Malaysian bikers to the Aprilia brand. It is undoubtedly more accessible than the RSV4 superbike and Tuono V4 1100.

Its predecessor, the Shiver 750 sold well in Malaysia and well-known worldwide as a supremely reliable motorcycle.

The 2019 Shiver 900 was introduced at Intermot 2018.

Highlights:

  • 896.1cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 8-valve, 90oV-Twin engine.
  • The engine produces 95.2 bhp (70 kW) at 8,750 RPM, 90 Nm of torque at 6,500 RPM.
  • New more efficient exhaust system.

  • Pistons with reduced friction.
  • Semi-dry internal lubrication circuit reduces power losses.
  • More efficient fuel-injectors.
  • Automatic decompressor to ease starting when the engine is cold.
  • Redesigned clutch reduces lever effort by 15%.

  • The 2019 Shiver 900 enters its third year of production since 2017.
  • Ride-by-wire (rbw) throttle (the Shiver 750 was the first production bike to use that technology).
  • 3 ride mode modes: Sport, Touring, Rain.
  • Marelli 7SM ECU shard with the RSV4 and Tuono 1100 V4.
  • Advanced traction control with three level and switchable.
  • Continental dual-channel ABS.
  • 4.3-inch TFT screen (adopted from the RSV4 and Tuono).

  • The TFT features Aprilia MIA multimedia and phone connectivity, plus navigation (through the smartphone app).

  • Redesigned fuel tank side covers, side panels, tail and front mudguard.
  • Kayaba forks adjustable for preload and rebound damping.

  • Sachs rear shock is adjustable for preload and rebound damping.
  • Offered in Challenging Red and Innovation Dark colours.

95 bhp may not seem much, but the most important factor here is the spread of 2,250 RPM between maximum torque and peak horsepower. This is what’s known as an engine’s “flexibility.” A wider spread means the torque curve is smoother, besides allowing the bike to accelerate quickly in any gear.

The Shiver 900 ought to inherit the Shiver 750’s great handling characteristic, since it retains similar chassis architecture.

The 2019 Aprilia Shiver 900 is fully-imported and priced from RM 72,000 (including SST but not on-the-road).

The bike is available from Aprilia Malaysia at The Gasket Alley, Welly World Cycle Sg. Buloh and Sheng Fatt Sdn. Bhd. in Penang. Please visit the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/apriliaofficialmalaysia/ and https://www.aprilia.com/en_EN/ for more information.

  • The are more updates for the 2019 Aprilia Shiver 900.

  • There’s a new exhaust, ECU, TFT display and colours.

  • Will it come to Malaysia?

We’ve ridden the Aprilia Shiver 750 in many occasions. We came away impressed with its handling, performance, reliability and value for money. But none of the new Aprilia Shiver 900 made its way to Malaysia. We hope that will change now that Aprilia is under a new custodian.

The Shiver 900 enters its third year of production in 2019 (introduced in 2017). As such, the Noale-based manufacturer updates it for the new year, although not by much. Why change perfection?

First of all, there is a new exhaust system to liberate gasses more efficiently. Engine power remains unchanged at 95 bhp and 89.5 Nm, but the real gain is in smooth throttle and predictable engine response.

The Aprilia Shiver 750 was the first production motorcycle fitted with a Ride-by-Wire throttle. The Shiver 900 continues this legacy, hence the inclusion of ride modes. However, the 2019 model gets the Marelli 7SM ECU (which is shared with the RSV4 and Tuono 1100 V4). It allows adjustment of traction control levels or turned off entirely.

ABS is a standard Continental dual-channel unit but there’s no IMU-based cornering ABS. The 4.3-inch TFT dash (same as the RSV4 and Tuono’s) now features multimedia connectivity, music and navigation.

The 2019 model is offered in Challenging Red and Innovation Dark colours.
