– CycleWorld
The world of drag racing is a fast and exhilarating one filled with powerful machines and super quick times, but what happens when you throw in the Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric bike into the mix?
The latest episode of “Science of Speed” by H-D showcases what the LiveWire is capable of on the drag strip at the hands of some of the world’s fastest drag racers in the business. (more…)
Production of the Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycle has halted.
Harley-Davidson did not provide the specifics of the decision, instead they mentioned only a “non-standard condition.” They also mentioned that investigations are underway to provide customers with products of the best quality.
However, according to The Wall Street Journal, the problem could well be the bike’s charging mechanism. The Motor Company recommended the use of professional DC fast-chargers instead of normal home chargers.
Units of LiveWire were already sent to select dealers in September this year but no sales number was released as yet. A recall has not been issued at this time also.
The LiveWire is supposed to kick start Harley’s flagging sales especially in the United States where millennials are shunning motorcycles. The design of the bike and being electric demonstrates the manufacturers keenest in harnessing this group. Its electric motor produces the equivalent of 105 hp and there is no clutch lever or gear shifter. It’s all twist and go.
But many overseas media reported lately that the model is finding few buyers, what not given its USD 29,799 price tag.
But CEO Matt Levatich defends the company’s decision saying that, “We made a deliberate decision to launch a halo product to demonstrate what’s possible in electric — a no-excuses Harley-Davidson electric — and we feel very good that we’ve already done that.” Levatich produced that statement in July.
Harley-Davidson didn’t state when production of the LiveWire will continue.

Ewan McGregor and his ridding buddy Charley Borman may just ride the Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycle in the upcoming documentary Long Way Up.
The trip will see the duo travel from South America to Los Angeles, California instead of all the way to Alaska as expected earlier. South American media spotted four of the electric bikes and support trucks being offloaded in Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina.
While we’re not criticizing the LiveWire, it has a highway range of up to only 150 km and 235 km in the city. However, it’s charging times that may drag the trip into a longer period of time. On the other hand, Harley announced that they’ve fast chargers that juice up the bike to 80% capacity in 40 minutes and 100% in an hour.
They may be supported by a pair of electric Rivian R1T trucks that have a range of up tp 650 km. These trucks will undoubted carry DC chargers for the bikes.
Riding Harleys seemed to solve the problem of representation. McGregor is the ambassador for the Moto Guzzi V85TT while Borman is the ambassador for Triumph Motorcycles. Many had expected to see the guys on two different bikes in this sequel. They rode the BMW R 1200 GS in Long Way Round in 2004 and Long Way Down in 2007.
It’ll be a high-profile branding exercise for the Motor Company, that’s for sure.
The 2020 Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric bike will be available from August 2019. The Motor Company unveiled the news along with two other electric concepts.
The Harley-Davidson LiveWire’s price is USD 29,799.
Apart from the high-end chassis componentry we reported earlier, the bike uses an all new “Revelation” electric drivetrain. The manufacturer says that it will produce a new Harley-Davidson sound as it accelerates and gains speed. This new futuristic sound represents the smooth, electric power of the LiveWire motorcycle.”
Apart from the drivetrain and chassis, the bike features LTE (4G)-equipped media centre, and IMU-based traction control and ABS.
We’ve tested the LiveWire concept before, and it sounded like a pulse-jet rather than the usual whirring sound you’d get from a “normal” electric drivetrain. It’s nice and it’s not from a speaker.
We also like to add that it was the LiveWire which changed our perception about electric motorcycles. We had expected it to be tame like electric scooters but it both surprised and impressed us. Acceleration was instantaneous and there’s no clutch and transmission to sap the motor’s power, unlike in petrol engines.
It can be charged by using standard household socket (Level 1). Other charging options are via Level 2 charge unit (21 km per hour of charge), and through a Level 3 DC Fast Charge which provides 309 km range from a one-hour charge.
The bike can now be pre-ordered online in certain countries. We are still awaiting confirmation from Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya.
The upcoming production Harley-Davidson LiveWire should allay some fears of electric bikes being like golf carts. That’s because the Motor Company has announced that the LiveWire will feature high-end suspension and brakes.
“When we were looking at Project LiveWire, the feedback we received was clear: customers wanted a true motorcycle,” says Marc McAllister, Vice President of Product Planning and Portfolio at Harley-Davidson. “They weren’t willing to compromise the ride for an electric vehicle. We had to look at it as a motorcycle first. To deliver the kind of performance the bike allows, we chose Showa suspension, Brembo brakes and so on, to deliver the kind of ride people expect.”
Harley’s association with Showa and Brembo isn’t new. The manufacturer’s touring models utilize Show Dual Bending Valve forks, as well as Reflex ABS units.
On the other hand, Harley will equip the the LiveWire with Showa Separate Function Big Piston forks (SFF) and Showa Balanced Free Rear Cushion-lite monoshock out back. Braking duty is handlbed by Brembo Monobloc calipers. The suspension will be fully-adjustable.
In the electronics department, the bike will have four power modes, besides three user-adjustable ones.
Harley-Davidson also plans to nominate 250 electric motorcycle dealers next year.
There’s no doubt that 2019 will be a massive, MASSIVE year for American bike manufacturer, Harley-Davidson. This very iconic brand is set for a major evolution with the introduction of some very outstanding models like the Streetfighter, Pan America, and FXDR 114 to name a few. (more…)
