Segmen motosikal bawah 200cc kini diperkembangkan lagi dengan Modenas Pulsar NS160 yang diperkenalkan dalam majlis pelancaran yang berlangsung di Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur, hari ini.

 

Pulsar NS160 masih mengekalkan elemen rekaan daripada NS200 bagaimanapun perbezaan paling ketara adalah penggunaan enjin, tayar dan cakera brek depan yang lebih kecil – 240mm.

Pulsar NS160 didatangkan dengan enjin 160cc satu silinder yang menghasilkan 15.3hp pada 8,500rpm dan 14.6Nm pada 6,500rpm yang kemudiannya disalurkan menerusi transmisi lima kelajuan.

Tidak seperti NS200 yang menggunakan starter elektrik semata-mata, NS160 juga menawarkan kick start.

Pada masa sama, NS160 masih mengekalkan tangki 12L seperti yang terdapat pada NS200.

NS160 juga lebih 10 kilogram lebih ringan berbanding NS200 sekaligus menawarkan tunggangan yang lebih mudah.

Di bahagian depan, NS160 didatangkan dengan fork teleskopik dan monoshock dengan nitrox di bahagian belakang.

Penggunaan lampu LED dibahagian depan dan belakang juga menyerlahkan lagi rupa Pulsar NS160 yang beridentitikan motosikal jenis naked.

Sementara itu, Modenas turut melancarkan Kriss 110, motosikal mampu milik jenis moped.

The Modenas Pulsar NS160 and Modenas Kriss MR3 were launched today.

Both bikes expand Modenas’s offerings in the Malaysian lightweight motorcycle market, giving buyers more choices.

Modenas Pulsar NS160 (from RM7,577) 

The Modenas Pulsar NS160 is the upgrade from the Pulsar 150. It shares styling elements of the NS200, apart from its narrower tyres, 240mm front brake disc, and engine.

Its 160cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine delivers 14.8hp and 14Nm of torque. That power is channelled through a five-speed transmission. The engine is secured to a perimeter frame from the Pulsar NS200.

The chassis consist of telescopic front forks and a gas-charged monoshock at the back. The split five-spoke wheels are mounted with 80/100 front and 110/80 rear tyres. Disc brakes handle braking on both ends and is supplemented with a single-channel ABS.

The Pulsar NS160 is seen as the entry level model, compared to the NS200. It offers better affordability in the naked style of the Pulsar NS200. It may prove to handle better and nimbler than the NS200 due to its lighter weight, while still retaining the Pulsar NS200’s chassis. Modenas brands the model as the obvious upgrade from kapchais.

Modenas targets to sell at least 1,500 units of the Pulsar NS160.

Highlights:

Modenas Kriss MR3 110 (from RM3,377)

The Modenas Kriss MR3 continues the success of the Kriss MR2. “MR” stands for “motosikal rakyat” or “people’s motorcycle.”

The model is designed to be affordable by a larger portion of motorcyclists, enabling to have their own transportation.

Highlights:

  • 110cc air-cooled, single-cylinder engine.
  • It produces 4.7hp at 8,000 RPM.

Bagi generasi baharu, nama MODENAS mungkin dianggap sebagai jaguh kampung tetapi bagi mereka yang tahu, MODENAS pernah melakar nama buat sementara waktu di arena MotoGP.

Jentera yang dicanang itu bernama Modenas KR3 – sebelum bertukar nama ke Proton KR3.

Bagaimana segalanya bermula?

Pada 1997, Kenny Roberts – bekas juara tiga kali MotoGP – meninggalkan Malboro Yamaha Racing Team selaku pengurus pasukan dan mula mengusahakan jentera sendiri, sebuah motosikal V3 (tiga silinder) yang memiliki saiz umpama sebuah jentera 250cc.

Kenny Roberts memulakan saingan di MotoGP bersama pasukan Team KR namun bergelut tatkala pasukan lain menggunakan enjin 4 silinder sebaris, Team KR menaruh harapan terhadap enjin 2 lejang 4 silinder.

Bagaimanapun, King Kenny mengekalkan keyakinan bahawa kejuruteraan yang diguna pakai mampu memberi saingan namun dia kemudiannya berdepan masalah kewangan.

Masalah tersebut membawa kepada penjodohan di antara King Kenny dan Modenas, sebuah syarikat motosikal berpangkalan di Gurun, Kedah.

Meskipun dianggap ‘mentah’ namun Modenas mampu menawarkan bantuan kewangan dan fasiliti penyelidikan menerusi seliaan Kawasaki, dua faktor yang dicari-cari King Kenny.

Enjin V3 498cc Taruhan Modenas – Team KR

Kisah dua dunia berbeza bermula, dan hasilnya gabungan ini menghasilkan enjin 2 lejang tiga silinder 498cc.

Sepelik gabungan Kenny Roberts dan Modenas, pelik lagi pilihan enjin yang digunakan. Namun dengan segala pengalaman dimiliki, Kenny yakin enjin ‘pelik’ itu mampu mencabar dominasi jentera Jepun yang mengguna pakai enjin 500cc 4 silinder.

Meskipun atas kertas enjin pasukan Modenas – Team KR dilihat kurang bisa – 160hp – Kenny turut mempertaruhkan aerodinamik dan casis yang ringan.

Kerjasama Dengan Lotus Dan TWR

Selain daripada Modenas, Team KR turut mendapat suntikan kepakaran daripada Lotus yang menawarkan bantuan casis dan Prancis Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR).

Percaya atau tidak disebabkan enjin diguna pakai adalah kecil, Modenas-Team KR berjaya menghasilkan casis yang ringan dan nipis sekaligus membawa kepada penampilan pertama di saingan MotoGP dengan dua pelumba, Kenny Robert Jr dan Jean Michel Bayle.

Modenas Undur Diri

Nasib tidak menyebelahi Modenas-Team KR apabila mereka gagal merekodkan sebarang keputusan memberangsangkan dan menjelang tahun 2000, Modenas membuat keputusan untuk undur diri.

Proton Team KR

Pada 2001, sewaktu Team KR tinggal nyawa-nyawa ikan, Proton – pengeluar kereta nasional yang tidak pernah menghasilkan sebarang kenderaan dua roda sehingga kini – ambil alih Team KR.

Bagaimanapun, projek KR3 hanya bertahan hingga 2002 apabila kelas premier 500cc beralih ke penggunaan jentera 1000cc 4 silinder tetapi FIM membenarkan motosikal dua lejang untuk bertanding buat kali terakhir dan Proton KR3 yang ditunggangi Jeremy McWilliams berjaya menempah petak pertama di GP Australia ketika sesi kelayakan sebelum menamatkan perlumbaan di kedudukan ke-10.

Meskipun Modenas KR3 gagal merekodkan sebarang kemenangan namun jenama motosikal nasional itu berjaya diukir dalam sejarah MotoGP.

Apa pun, diharapkan nama Modenas akan kembali menyinari sukan permotoran antarabangsa.

Modenas Tarik Nafas Baharu

Sejak meninggalkan arena MotoGP, Modenas memberikan fokus sepenuhnya terhadap pembinaan motosikal kapcai mampu milik antaranya Kriss, Dinamik, X-Cite, CT110 dan sebagainya.

Namun Modenas seakan mendapat suntikan baharu apabila kembali bangkit dengan beberapa jentera yang lebih besar antaranya Pulsar NS200, RS200 dan Dominar D400.

Meskipun dijenamakan semula daripada Bajaj namun ia sedikit sebanyak menandakan langkah baharu bagi pengeluar motosikal nasional itu.

Apatah lagi dengan pelancaran Power Store MODENAS pertama di Sunsuria Avenue, Kota Damansara baru-baru ini yang juga merupakan kedai konsep pertama seumpamanya di Asia Tenggara.

Mungkinlah ada projek yang lebih besar berlaku hasil daripada kerjasama Modenas-Bajaj ini di masa akan datang?

Tiada yang menjangkakan kerjasama Modenas dan Team KR akan membawa kepada penyertaan pertama Modenas di arena MotoGP jadi tidak hairan jika kerjasama Modenas dan Bajaj mampu membawa kepada senario yang sama impaknya.

Do you remember the MODENAS KR3 500cc GP racer?

The bike had a very interesting story: It was meant to revolutionize 500cc Grand Prix racing and remains well-loved for its spirit among many long-time Malaysian and worldwide GP fans.

The name “KR” stemmed from a legendary name, Kenny Roberts. As in Kenny Roberts Sr., the three-time 500 GP World Champion, the man who popularized the knee-down cornering technique and all-around cowboy (read: rebel).

On the other hand, the number “3” stood for three-cylinders.

How did it come to this?

KR managed GP teams, all of them on Yamahas, from 1984. But his ventures in the premier class started showing promising results when he signed Wayne Rainey in 1988.

It was in 1990 that KR secured Marlboro’s sponsorship and his team became the factory Yamaha squad in both 500cc and 250cc categories. Also in that year, Rainey won his first 500cc GP title and John Kocinski won the 250cc title.

Rainey would deliver another two titles in 1991 and 1992. He was on his way to fourth championship in 1993 but a crash at the Italian GP paralyzed him from the chest down. His bitter rival Kevin Schwantz of Lucky Strike Suzuki was crowned champion instead.

As the years ticked by without Rainey, a plucky Aussie by the name of Mick Doohan took over the reins.

KR stuck it out with Yamaha, but he was constantly unhappy with the progress of their bikes. He even complained many times publicly that the factory took no heed to his feedback on improving their bikes.

So, in 1996, KR made an announcement that surprised everyone – he was breaking away from Yamaha after 25 years in the 1997 season (like how Herve Poncharal would do in 2019). But he wasn’t moving to another manufacture. No, not “King” Kenny. He was going to build his own bikes.

Enter the MODENAS KR3

It was during this time that our very own fledgling (it started in 1995) Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn. Bhd. (MODENAS) decided to step in and work together on the project. It was hoped that some of the technology would eventually make their way into MODENAS’s future models, besides placing the brand in the pinnacle of motorcycle racing.

KR decided to move base to the “Motorsport Valley” in England where the Formula 1 and race car teams are based and began working together with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR).

They decided on a three-cylinder, two-stroke, 500cc machine as the rules gave three-cylinder machines a 10kg weight advantage over four-cylinder bikes. The lower weight allowed the bike to be more agile and carry more midcorner speeds, like what KR saw with Freddie Spencer’s Honda NS500 in 1982 to 1983. This was also deemed as an advantage as the racetracks during the time had more corners than long straights for the four-cylinder machines to utilize.

But they knew that a three-cylinder would make less horsepower compared to a four-cylinder one. So, the team focused on improving volumetric efficiency (how much fuel-air mixture the engine could induct).

Engine design was supervised by Bud Askland, the father of the team’s manager Chuck Askland. They ended up with a 498cc powerplant with “square” dimensions i.e. same bore and stroke figures of 59.6 mm x 59.6 mm. The Vee-angle between the cylinders was set at nearly 180with two cylinders down below and one up top.

Anyway, the frame was designed to give the bike better handling characteristics. KR worked with TWR and French chassis maker FTR to result in an aluminium twin-spar “deltabox” that’s smaller and lighter than the Japanese. The headstock featured eccentric carriers to allow adjustments of the steering’s rake angle and trail. There were also eccentric carriers in the swingarm mount to adjust the height of the swingarm pivot. These were unheard of at the time.

Even fueling was ahead of its time. The KR team adopted electronic carburetors without float bowls which used ducted air to atomize the fuel, much like a fuel-injection system. Such a setup avoided the fuel from emulsifying from intense vibrations. Arrow custom made an exhaust system for the engine.

This first engine produced 160 hp and went on to develop 180 hp in 2002.

The bodywork, it was designed to wrap tightly around the frame for a smaller frontal profile. Consequently, the radiator was moved to under the seat where ducts supplied cooling air to it.

The MODENAS-KR team found an uphill (more like up-mountain) task ahead of them in the 1997 season.

It was initially thought that the engine’s layout gave the engine good self-balancing inertial forces (of the pistons going up and down and the rotating crankshaft), so it was sans a balancer shaft. However, the engine suffered many breakdowns due to crankshaft cracking.

Additionally, there was no controlled-tyre ruling back then, thus the tryes were manufactured to each specific bike in the paddock. The new and small team had to use old tyres or those designed for other bikes. Sometimes both. It meant that they could not capitalize on their handling.

But the KR3 was supremely fast in midcorner and there were other riders who commented that they were led into entering corners too fast behind it. But when the situation was reversed, the KR3 riders found themselves blocked by the slower four-cylinder machines and then outgunned at the corner exits.

The KR3 project persisted until 2002 when the two-stroke 500cc GP formula gave way to four-stroke 1000cc machines. The FIM allowed two stroke bikes a grace period during that year and they could race together. Jeremey McWilliams qualified the MODENAS KR3 on pole at the 2002 Australian GP.

With the new formula, the KR3 project built a four-stroke, V-5, 1000cc bike called the KR5. Now Malaysian car maker Proton funded the project until the end of 2004.

Legacy of MODENAS KR3

While the MODENAS KR3 didn’t win races, it left a lasting legacy in MotoGP. Later, Aprilia would attempt with their own three-cylinder Cube racer. BMW had actually worked on a MotoGP prototype which also had – you guessed it – three cylinders. BMW’s stillborn project would eventually end up gaining one more cylinder and became the S 1000 RR.

In any case, we would love to see a MODENAS KR3 up close again.

Pasaran motosikal ‘adventure tourer’ semakin mendapat tempat di hati peminat motosikal seluruh dunia terutamanya di India yang ketika ini didominasi Royal Enfield Himalayan dan Hero Xpulse 200 yang baru sahaja di lancarkan.

Menurut laporan Gaadiwaadi, model baharu ini akan didatangkan dengan tayar aloi 19 inci di bahagian depan dan 18 inci di bahagian belakang dan dilengkapi tayar ‘offroad’.

Pada masa sama, dijangkakan jentera tersebut akan dilengkapi dengan fork teleskopik yang lebih panjang dan unit penyerap hentakan tunggal di bahagian belakang.

Seperti model Bajaj yang lebih besar, Dominar 400 – yang dijual dibawah jenama Modenas di Malaysia – Pulsar 250 Adventure turut akan didatangkan dengan ‘dual channel ABS’.

Model baharu ini juga akan dikuasakan dengan enjin yang sama digunakan pada KTM Duke 250. Enjin 248.8cc satu silinder ini menghasilkan 29.5hp pada 9,000rpm dan 24Nm pada 7,500rpm bagi Duke 250 bagaimanapun, dijangkakan Bajaj akan ‘retune’ enjin ini bagi menyesuaikan dengan keperluan sebuah jentera adventure.

Ketika ini masih tiada maklumat sama ada model ini akan di bawa masuk ke Malaysia.

Pengembaraan Modenas Dominar ‘Explore the Unexplored’ akhirnya sampai ke penghujung yang menyaksikan 16 pemilik Dominar 400 memulakan perjalanan dari Juru, Pulau Pinang menuju ke Rimba Valley Motocamp, Janda Baik.

Pengembaraan kali ini menyaksikan konvoi menempuh lebih 500km dengan menyelusuri Juru, Simpang Pulai, Cameron Highlands, Sungai Koyan sebelum berhenti di Rimba Valley Motocamp di Janda Baik yang merupakan destinasi perhentian terakhir.

Perjalanan bermula seawal 6.30 pagi hari Sabtu di Restoran Nasi Kandar Pelita, Juru Auto City, Prai yang diselia oleh dua marshall, Wahid Ooi dan Sep Irran bagi memastikan konvoi bergerak lancar.

Konvoi kemudiannya berhenti di Simpang Pulai untuk sesi isi minyak dan menarik nafas sebelum menyambung perjalanan menuju ke Kafe Banjaran untuk sesi bergambar.

Sejurus selepas itu, konvoi dibawa merentasi terowong ala ‘Monaco’ sebelum konvoi dilepaskan buat sementara waktu agar mereka dapat mencari ilham dan pemandangan terbaik untuk sesi ‘motography’agar dapat dikongsikan di sosial media bersama pemilik Dominar seluruh dunia.

Konvoi kemudiannya bertemu di Ringlet dan meneruskan perjalanan melalui Pos Betau dan Sungai Koyan yang merupakan syurga bagi peminat jentera dua roda.

Peserta turut menyaksikan beberapa jentera kapcai sedang beraksi ala CubPrix ketika melalui laluan yang berlatarbelakangkan Empangan Hidroelektrik Ulu Jerai itu.

Konvoi kemudiannya berdepan situasi ‘sesat terkawal’ apabila GPS membawa mereka melalui beberapa laluan yang tiada dalam perancangan namun masih menyajikan pengalaman menarik kepada peserta terlibat.

Pengembaraan Modenas Dominar akhirnya menamatkan perjalanan lebih 500km di Rimba Valley Motocamp, Janda Baik yang merupakan tuan rumah Rimba Raid 2019 tahun ini!

Datuk Kapten Nik Huzlan Nik Hussain

Selepas bermalam sambil ditemani air sungai yang seakan menyuntik ketenangan setelah seharian di atas jalan raya, peserta kemudiannya diberi peluang untuk menimba pengalaman menempuh tunggangan ‘off-road’ keesokan harinya dengan tunjuk ajar Datuk Kapten Nik Huzlan Nik Hussain (gambar), pemilik Rimba Valley Motocamp.

Rata-rata peserta teruja kerana diberi peluang tersebut yang boleh dianggap tidak ternilai apatah lagi dapat menguji jentera Dominar di atas permukaan berbeza.

Menariknya, meskipun dengan penggunaan tayar ‘street’ setiap peserta berjaya menempuh perjalanan naik turun bukit tanpa seorang pun yang jatuh! “Terima kasih Kapten Nik!” merupakan perkataan yang diutarakan setiap peserta sebaik selepas sesi ‘off-road’.

 

Sebaik selesai, masing-masing terus terjun ke dalam sungai sekaligus menandakan pengakhiran kepada pengembaraan penuh epik edisi terakhir Modenas Dominar ‘Explore the Unexplored’.

 

Pengembaraan Modenas “Explore the Unexplored” Ride kini telah sampai ke penghujungnya minggu depan dan bagi mengakhiri program epik ini, Modenas telah menyediakan program yang istimewa bagi para peserta.

Bagi edisi kali ini, pengembaraan akan bermula pada pagi 13 Julai 2019 daripada Juru Auto City, Perai dan akan menuju ke Cameron Highlands untuk menikmati cuaca dingin.

Konvoi kemudiannya akan turun ke Bentong menerusi jalan Cameron Highlands – Sungai Koyan sebelum menuju ke destinasi terakhir yang terletak di Rimba Valley Motocamp di mana peserta akan berkhemah di tepi sungai yang jernih sambil ditemani bintang-bintang di langit pada waktu malam.

 

Rimba Valley Motocamp turut merupakan tuan rumah kepada Rimba Raid yang akan berlangsung seminggu kemudian.

Peserta hanya perlu menanggung kos minyak motosikal masing-masing sementara segala makanan, minuman serta tempat penginapan akan disediakan pihak Modenas, jadi usah risau!

Inisiatif “Explore the Unexplored” bermula selepas Modenas Dominar D400 dilancarkan di Malaysia. Seperti namanya, ia membuka peluang kepada pemilik Dominar bukan sahaja untuk menjelajah seluruh Malaysia dengan jentera kesayangan mereka malah berkongsikan pengalaman dengan pemilik Dominar D400 di seluruh dunia!

Bukan itu sahaja, peserta turut berpeluang untuk memenangi pelbagai hadiah menarik menerusi pertandingan gambar terbaik bersama jentera Dominar masing-masing.

Diingatkan peluang ini terbuka untuk pemilik Modenas Dominar D400 sahaja dan atas faktor keselamatan serta memastikan kelancaran tunggangan, tidak dibenarkan untuk membawa penumpang (pillion).

  • Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. has increased their stake in Modenas.

  • Their current purchase will see them hold a 30% stake, up from 11%.

  • But converting the upcoming CPS will bring KHI’s stake to 48%.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) otherwise known as “Kawasaki Japan” increases their stake in Modenas from 19 to 30 percent.

KHI and DRB-Hicom Bhd. entered an agreement for KHI to purchase and additional 14.3 million shares which equals an 11 percent stake. The shares were valued at RM 40.3 million cash.

Additionally, KHI is also subscribing to 52 million convertible preference shares (CPS) that will be issued by Modenas. KHI’s stake in the company will rise to 48% upon conversion.

KHI’s larger equity means that will actively participate in Modenas’s operations, rather than just being a bystander. The two entities have been partners for more than 20 years and KHI has been a 19% shareholder in Modenas since the latter’s inception in 1995.

The first Modenas motorcycles were based on Kawasaki’s models, including the Jaguh 175 lightweight cruiser. Apart from producing motorcycles, Modenas also machines components for KHI.

Their production facility is based in Gurun, Kedah and has a capacity of 130,000 units per year.

It’ll be interesting to see what KHI has in mind for the Modenas-Bajaj partnership.

Kawasaki telah meningkatkan pegangan dalam Modenas sebanyak 30 peratus – dan mampu naik sehingga 48 peratus – sekaligus mencetuskan persoalan sama ada jenama motosikal nasional itu akan menghasilkan jentera baharu dengan sentuhan pengeluar Jepun?

DRB-HICOM Berhad telah memeterai perjanjian dengan Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd (KHI) untuk menjual saham biasa 14,300,000 dalam Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (MODENAS) bernilai RM40.3 juta sekaligus meningkatkan pegangan Kawasaki yang sebelum ini memiliki 19 peratus.

Menurut kenyataan dikeluarkan MODENAS, KHI juga akan membeli 52 juta saham keutamaan boleh tukar (CPS) – apabila diaktifkan, pegangan ekuiti KHI akan melompat ke 48 peratus.

Bagaimanapun CPS hanya berlaku sekiranya MODENAS mencapai tanda aras yang telah dipersetujui kedua-dua pihak.

Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan bagi DRB-HICOM, Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal Albar meluahkan keyakinan struktur baharu ini akan memberi manfaat terhadap MODENAS.

“KHI telah memegang ekuiti didalam MODENAS sejak penubuhannya lagi. Ketika itu pun, produk mereka telah membantu MODENAS mencapai persada carta jualan di pasaran motosikal tempatan. Pegangan ekuiti yang lebih besar ini juga bererti KHI akan mengambil bahagian didalam operasi MODENAS, berbanding hanya sebagai pemegang saham. Saya yakin pengalaman dan kepakaran teknikal KHI akan membawa kepada suatu fasa produk yang lebih baik untuk pelanggan MODENAS, terutamanya didalam segmen street bike serta sports bike,” jelasnya.

Perhubungan ini dilihat membolehkan kedua-dua pihak untuk bekerjasama dengan lebih rapat dalam membangunkan produk yang lebih baik bagi pasaran tempatan.

“Kawasaki dan MODENAS bukan tidak mengenali sesama sendiri, maka sinergi antara kedua-dua kumpulan akan memastikan kerjasama dengan berkesan untuk membangunkan produk bagi pasaran domestik. Rakyat Malaysia telah lama menggemari produk dari Kawasaki, yang dikenali sebagai jenama global yang berkualiti dan mempunyai rekod yang kukuh di arena sukan bermotor,” tambah Syed Faisal.
