Modenas has been the official distributor and assembler of Kymco products in Malaysia since 2016, and has done a splendid job at it.

Growing from strength to strength, Modenas has now introduced the AK550 Premium.

The 550cc puts out some impressive numbers as well – 51hp, 52Nm and a twin-cylinder liquid-cooled engine with a final belt drive for a smooth delivery. The fuel tank measures in at 15 litres, which will cost about RM30.75 for a full tank based on today’s RON95 prices.

The features on offer are equally as impressive as well such as upside down forks, twin-discs measuring 280mm at the front and 260mm at the rear grabbed by Brembo callipers with ABS.

The ABS system is said to be the fastest acting system on the market and and are lean-sensitive as well.

Besides that, there are also dual power modes as well – Power and Rain. This works in conjunction with the Traction Control system that ensures you never run out of grip in any situation.

For those who spend a lot of time on the highway, there is a cruise control system as well as an electronically adjustable wind shield for added comfort.

And just to ensure your devices don’t run out of power, the AK500 comes with USB ports as well.

Practicality is of course to be expected for any scooter of this category, and the AK550 does not disappoint with underseat storage that is good for a full face helmet and one open facer. Besides that, there are also two glove compartments up front which can be used to store smaller items as well.

Tech is also central to the AK500 experience with a system called Noodoe that is basically a navigation system which Kymco says allows riders to focus on the road. But there’s always Waze and Google Maps in case you don’t want to download another navigation system,

One handy piece of tech though is the Find My Ride function that is part of the Noodoe app. This lets you locate your AK550 in a crowded parking lot, something that all of us have surely experienced in a crowded shopping mall.

The Kymco AK550 Premium is now in Malaysia for RM65,600.

Motor elektrik makin canggih sekarang, tapi bagi ramai peminat, motor elektrik mesih tak boleh kalahkan feeling moto dua roda bermesin petrol. Tapi, adakah inovasi teknikal boleh cover kekurangan “vroom-vroom” tu? Kymco nak cuba!

Menariknya, Ko tak malu mengaku buat motor elektrik seronok bukan perkara senang. Tapi, Kymco tetap semangat nak “Infuse excitement into an electric motorcycle, walaupun susah sikit.”

In recent years, electric motorcycles have witnessed significant advancements, yet for some enthusiasts, the allure of traditional petrol-powered two-wheelers remains unmatched. Kymco, the Taiwanese motorcycle giant, has been at the forefront of blending technical innovation with the inherent charisma of combustion engines.

Back in 2018, Kymco unveiled the SuperNex, an electric motorcycle featuring a manual gearbox. A year later, the company introduced the RevoNex, applying a similar principle but in a naked bike design. Although absent from the Kymco stand at the 2023 EICMA show in Milan, the RevoNex continues to capture attention.

Allen Ko, Chairman of Kymco, shared insights at EICMA 2023, expressing the company’s ambition to lead the electric evolution. When questioned about the RevoNex, Ko affirmed its ongoing development, acknowledging the challenge of infusing thrill into electric bikes. Despite the difficulty, Kymco is dedicated to enhancing the personality of their electric motorcycles, striving to make them more exhilarating.

While Ko remained cautious about divulging too much information, he confirmed the continuation of the RevoNex project. Originally slated for production in 2021, the showroom-ready version is yet to make its debut as of 2024. Ko’s remarks strongly suggest that the RevoNex is progressing towards becoming an available electric motorcycle for the public.

What sets the RevoNex apart is its inclusion of a manual gearbox, promising a more engaging riding experience compared to its competitors. Despite potential interruptions in power delivery due to the gearbox, the RevoNex is anticipated to be exceptionally fast. Previously disclosed figures for the concept indicated an impressive 3.9 seconds for 0-100 kmh and 8.7 seconds for 100-200 kmh. As Kymco continues to navigate the challenges, the RevoNex holds the promise of being one of the most thrilling electric motorcycles on the market when it finally arrives for public purchase.

Scooters have become increasingly popular thanks to their low weight, accessibility, affordability and even practicality. While Vespas, Lambrettas, and other classic scooters capture the attention of diehard enthusiasts, utilitarian scooters continue to have their own niche among commuters.

Kymco has long been one at the forefront of fun, practical and even desirable scooters, and for the 2024 model-year, it has refreshed its popular Downtown series.

The Downtown scooter will be offered in two flavors for 2024 – 125 and 350. While the 125 will appeal for those looking for something accessible, the 350 will appeal to those who want more power, as well as those looking for a practical all-rounder with some highway capability.

Among the upgrades to the 2024 model-year include an overall sportier design thanks to more angular bodywork. The styling is distinctly modern, featuring sporty elements combined with touring-inspired styling such as a tall windscreen, two-up saddle, and built-in passenger grab handles. According to Kymco, the seats have been improved, prioritizing comfort for longer hours on the saddle.

Styling aside, the new Kymco Downtown series of scooters has also receive technological updates. For starters, both versions come standard with a large, full-color TFT display, as well as a keyless ignition system for quick and convenient stops and starts. Interestingly, Kymco has thrown in a new tire pressure monitoring system on the new models, too.

Exclusive to the Downtown 350, the addition of cruise control and traction control provide further convenience on long highway stints, as well as safety in all weather conditions. There’s also a new emergency braking warning system that triggers the hazard lights under heavy braking.

In terms of underpinnings, the updated Kymco Downtown series sports components that are strictly for road use. It gets a standard telescopic fork with 110 millimeters of travel, as well as a pair of rear shock absorbers with a similar 100 millimeters of rear wheel travel. The scooter rolls on a 14-inch and 13-inch front and rear wheel combo. Other performance data and specifications have yet to be released by Kymco, so be sure to stay tuned if scooters like the new Downtown pique your interest.

Kymco, a renowned name in the realm of technologically advanced scooters and a manufacturer for brands like Kawasaki and BMW, made a significant impact at this year’s EICMA show in Milan. Among the array of models presented, the spotlight shone on the CV-L6.

In recent years, the adventure scooter segment has witnessed remarkable growth, with key players such as Honda, Yamaha, SYM, and Keeway introducing new models. Kymco has now joined the fray with the CV-L6, a maxi-scooter infused with rugged styling and off-road capabilities. Embodying the principles of freedom, toughness, and adventure, Kymco’s CV-L6 offers design cues from the adventure bike world — characterized by its pointed and aggressive bodywork, tall windscreen, and integrated luggage — while retaining the accessibility and user-friendly nature of a maxi-scooter.

Positioned as a versatile ride suitable for both urban commuting and long-distance adventures, the CV-L6 boasts a blend of technology emphasizing comfort, safety, convenience, and performance. Powering this adventure-ready scooter is the same robust 550cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected parallel-twin engine found in the impressive AK 550 maxi-scooter, delivering 51 horsepower.

Beyond sheer performance, the CV-L6 rides on alloy wheels fitted with dual-purpose tires. Its front suspension features sturdy inverted forks with substantial travel, complemented by an offset rear monoshock. Braking prowess is managed by dual Brembo radially mounted discs up front and a single disc brake at the rear.

Kymco has ingeniously crafted the CV-L6 around a new lightweight frame, providing a lower seat height to cater to a diverse range of riders. Enhancing the adventure-ready design are integrated luggage accessories from Givi, comprising side panniers and a top case. This thoughtful addition allows riders to customize their experience for varying distances, with the flexibility to remove the side panniers and top case for a more agile city ride.

Electric motorcycle is on the rise particularly due to the world’s effort towards sustainability.

Kymco Chairman, Allen Ko also believed that the future of two wheels lies with electric vehicles (EV). The company introduction of the RevoNEX and SuperNEX concept back in 2018 and 2019 showcased the company’s desire to venture into electric mobility.

However, Allan noted that lack of infrastructure could hinder automaker plans to promote EV.

“The kind of technology we are talking about these days is all about infrastructure. So, you want to have the hydrogen-powered engine, but where is the station? You need people to build it.

“If you don’t have a very established and recognised trend, then people don’t want to invest. No one single company can do those things, it requires everybody’s effort to make it work,” Allan told MCN.

He also added that the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) will take sometime.

“I think the transition from internal combustion engines to electric is going to take a while. Not because of the tech, not because of the cost, but mainly because of the infrastructure.

“So, even people who want to buy an electric motorcycle, they don’t find the places to charge, or to swap. So, I think it really depends on that. But the key is that these days – especially in the younger generations – is they prefer EV,” he added.

Nonetheless, Allan is adamant that EV is coming and will stay for good.

“I think there’s a long-term change and there’s no turning back. EV is coming and at a certain point – especially when the government set a deadline for the internal combustion engine vehicles – that will be the end of them. It’s going to come.”
