Honda Monkey

In an exciting update from Cub House Honda in Thailand, motorcycle enthusiasts are in for a treat as the brand unveils its latest creation, the Honda Monkey Lightning Edition.

  • Bursting with charm and unique graphics, this special edition Monkey promises a delightful riding experience.
  • the unique Honda Monkey Lightning Edition is priced at THB108,900 (RM14.8k).

The eye-catching design begins with the tank, which showcases a playful cartoon lightning bolt flanked by charming storm clouds. Adding to the appeal, smaller bolts of lightning shoot from beneath the clouds towards the ground.

The words “Lightning Edition” encircle the design, with the letter “i” in “lightning” cleverly replaced by yet another lightning bolt, emphasizing the theme. The Lightning Edition mascot, sporting tinted sun goggles, lends a cool touch to the tank’s aesthetics.

The bold proclamation “MONKEY LIGHTNING” in black and yellow block letters grabs attention, with the letter “i” once again fashioned into a vibrant yellow lightning bolt. The cream-colored plain background accentuates the tank’s captivating text and logo.

Carrying the same captivating theme as the tank, the side cover features a cream-coloured background encased in a black outline to complement the bike’s dominant yellow colour.

The standard Honda Monkey swingarm is given a dazzling yellow makeover to match the overall color scheme of this Special Edition. Written in black and yellow block letters, the swingarm proudly states “Flash of Lightning. The rear shock’s bright yellow spring harmonizes beautifully with the bike’s main color.

The Honda Monkey is the most fun and adorable motorcycle you can get your hands on in the market right now.

For those planning to buy the Monkey, you are in luck as the Japanese manufacturer has upgraded the fun bike with an all-new 5-speed transmission for the 2022 model year.

The update should not come as a surprise as the Honda Grom received the same treatment last year.

Thanks to the upgrade, the 2022 Monkey offers a taller final ratio and shorter fist ratio, thus allowing a better pickup and higher top speed.

Nonetheless, the overall look is expected to remain the same as the previous generation.

The 2022 Honda Monkey is avaialble in the U.S for USD4,199 (RM17.7k).

Ah yes, the Honda Monkey. Amazing during its unveiling, iconic throughout history, and timeless even by today’s standards. It turns out that its evolution is far from over as Honda is currently working on a more ‘compact’ version of the Honda Monkey 125 mini-bike. Is it possible? Looking at the filed patents, apparently so! (more…)

  • Japanese aftermarket component maker, Kitaco, turned the cute Honda Monkey into an edgy café racer.

  • It looks like a riveted steel-plated beast but doesn’t lose its cuteness.

  • The Honda Monkey is a great platform for individualization.

The Honda Monkey has always been seen as cute bikes, but a Japanese aftermarket component maker turns it into something edgier. Case in point is this Kitaco Honda Monkey 125  Café.

Kitaco produces components for all for Japanese manufacturers. But they turned the playbike into this café racer. Their Monkey 125 Café was put together for the Tokyo Motor Show. It was also shown off during the 12th Monkey Meeting in Tama, Japan.

If you thought the stock 12-inch wheels are too small, Kitaco swapped them out for a pair of even smaller 10-inch items. The cowling was one-off but Japanese magazine said that it could be volume-produced. The stock rear suspension was replaced with a pair of Nitron shocks with remote reservoirs.

The engine also received attention in the form of a 181cc NEO big bore kit. Exhaust gasses are vented through a Kitaco exhaust tip.

The whole packaged is finished in a theme that looks like metal plates riveted together, with sakura (cheery blossom) flowers floating over them.

So, call the Honda Monkey small, impractical or whatever because some customization could turn it into something amazing.

  • You can probably 3-D print your own parts one day.

  • French design firm VIBA 3-D printed the components on this Honda Monkey.

  • The components are aluminium, not plastic.

Remember Bugatti showing off the world’s first brake calipers using 3-D print? Yes, 3-D printing is starting to take root these days. Take this custom Honda Monkey, for example.

The parts are aluminium, not plastic. The 3-D printing process is called Selective Laser Imaging. In this bike’s case, it’s the fancy name of using lasers to superheat aluminium alloy powder to create specific shapes. 3-D printing can also be used for polymers and other materials, resulting in solid projects. (Check out the video below.)

Anyhow, a French design firm called VIBA 3-D bolt-on parts for a Honda Monkey.

These aren’t just bunch of aluminium knock-off parts, mind you. For example, the fuel tank has an internal honeycomb structure to avoid fuel from sloshing around. The headlight’s frame is one piece with the fender and includes a luggage rack. That necessitated the change of the headlamp.

The brake and clutch levers are hollow to allow the wiring to run to the turnsignals at the end.

VIBA will only build 23 of these kits but did not specify if you could obtain the components individually. They look cool, though.

  • The iconic Honda Monkey makes a comeback and is available in Malaysia.

  • The new Monkey looks retro but is a modern bike underneath.

  • Boon Siew Honda offers the bike in three playful colours.

Boon Siew Honda has launched the successor of one the most iconic motorcycles of all time – the Honda Monkey.

The Honda Monkey was officially called the Z50 when it was launched in 1963. It rolled on five-inch wheels, powered by a single-cylinder 49cc four-stroke engine.

The Z50 harked a shift in paradigm to small, inexpensive “playbikes” which everyone could just jump on and monkey around. If it surprised everyone in its Oompa Loompa-friendly size, its sales success was an even bigger surprise.

1963 Honda Monkey

The Z50 became known as the Honda “Monkey” both affectionally and derogatively. The name was derived from how adult riders looked like when seated on the bike, with his back arched, knees and elbows sticking (way) out the sides. If your mind suddenly conjures up the image of an ape riding a tricycle in a circus, you’re right, my friend.

But that’s the real appeal of the Honda Monkey – being fun while different at the same time.

The bike was so popular that Honda introduced a whole list of upgrades and updates throughout the years until the introduction of the MSX125. Also known as the Grom, it swept up multiple awards from overseas publications. It’s also immensely popular in Thailand.

And now for 2018, Honda has thrown in some serious updates. The new Monkey may look no different from how it was 55 years ago, but you could spot a host of modern componentry upon closer inspection.

Say hello to the 2018 Honda Monkey!

For starters, 125cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine was sourced from the MSX125. It produces 9 bhp at 7000 RPM and 10.5 Nm of torque at 5500 RPM.  Such power output makes it more viable as an everyday bike.

The rolling stock has also been upgraded to feature upside-down forks in front and preload-adjustable dual-shocks at the rear. Honda claims a 775mm seat height and 100mm of rear wheel travel. Both front and rear ends are anchored by hydraulic disc brakes.

Other updates include LED headlamp, taillamp and signal lamps, digital LCD meter, alarm system with Answer Back feature, and retro-style muffler.

The 2018 Honda Monkey comes in three colour schemes of shiny chrome and bright paintjobs including Pearl Nebula Red, Pearl Glittering Blue and aptly named Banana Yellow.

Boon Siew Honda recommends a basic selling price of RM 13,999.00 (with 0% SST and not on-the-raod).

Please visit Honda Motorcycle Malaysia’s official Facebook page for more details on the Honda Monkey and other products.

Honda Europe has unveiled the 2018 Honda Monkey which is ready for production.

The new 125cc Monkey features modern specs like LCD meter, LED lights, ABS, IMU, and USD forks.

Its 125cc single-cylinder engine is able to produce 9.3hp and 11Nm of torque.

Honda’s most famous mini-bike is back in its latest evolution yet. The 2018 Honda Monkey is the most updated mini-bike in its series which comes with the latest specifications and electronics you wouldn’t normally find on a 125cc bike. (more…)
