Ducati Panigale

Ducati Motor Holding celebrates yet another good year after closing off 2019 with a total of 53,183 bikes delivered to customers around the globe (which is a slight increase of 179 units from 2018) but what’s even more impressive is that 8,304 units of those sold are from the Ducati Panigale range, making it the world’s best-selling superbike! It was just a matter of time before we see the arrival of the Ducati Panigale V4 Superleggera and the news came from none other than Ducati CEO, Claudio Domenicali. It turns out that a selected group of Ducatisti received an email pertaining something called “Project 1708” and boy oh boy, are we excited to share what we have for you (no, we didn’t get the email…). We once wrote about the possibility of 2019 BMW S 1000 RR owners turning their superbikes into carbon fibre editions thanks to Ilmberger Carbon. Now, owners of the powerful Ducati Panigale V4 R can also turn their machines into carbon monsters with some very cool parts available for purchase on their website. (more…)

  • The 2020 Ducati Panigale V4 and 2020 Ducati Panigale V4 S were also updated.

  • They were revealed at the Ducati World Premiere.

  • Outwardly, they look like the Panigale V4 R.

More on Ducati; this was why they chose to debut new bikes away from EICMA because there are so many all at once. Included in the Ducati World Premiere were the 2020 Ducati Panigale V4 and 2020 Ducati Panigale V4 S.

The updates were aimed at moving the two bikes a little closer to the WorldSBK homologation Panigale V4 R model, but of course, the R still has more race-ready components.

First and foremost, they gain the V4 R’s winglets and fairing, complete with gills. The fairing is also wider along with a taller windscreen to provide the rider with more wind protection. Those winglets really work, and provide 30 kg of downforce at 270 km/h — the same figures as the R’s. The downforce they provide allows the rider to open the throttle earlier and keep on the gas while accelerating as wheelies are kept in check without having the anti-wheelie electronics cutting in. Ducati claims they obtained a 2.43m advantage over the 2019 model from the last corner to the finish line at Jerez.

The front of the frame was also made less stiff to provide more feedback. Better feedback equals better confidence. Additionally, the centre of gravity was moved 5 mm higher for better turning leverage.

Lastly, the already excellent traction control strategy was upgraded to DTC EVO 2, as per the new Streetfighter V4 and Panigale V2.

Ducati also released the prices. The Panigale V4 costs € 23,490 and the Panigale V4 S costs € 28,790. That marks a € 500 increase for both bikes.

  • A supposed Ducati Panigale V4 Superleggera was spotted undergoing tests.

  • Ducati is following their tradition of producing limited-edition super light superbikes.

  • The bike may be unveiled during the Ducati 2020 World Premiere.

A supposed Ducati Panigale V4 Superleggera was spotted undergoing tests.

Maybe it was unexpected, but Ducati seems to be continuing with the Superleggera (super light) tradition, as they did with the Panigale 1199 and Panigale 1299.

Operating on the “light is right” principal, the test bike was spotted with generous amounts of carbon fibre. The main bodywork including the nose cone, front portion of the fuel tank, and seat unit are made of the lightweight stuff.

But we noticed that the bodywork’s styling takes after the Panigale V4 R’s complete with winglets.

Ducati seems to retain the front and rear mudguards, and belly pan in polymer. The swingarm is also non-carbon.

The rims share the same design as those on the Panigale 1199 Superleggera and Panigale 1299 Superleggera, however. It could very well mean that they are carbon fibre, too.

The exhaust muffler also looks different and could be of a lightweight design and material.

It goes without saying that the Superleggera will be much lighter than the regular V4. For comparison sake, the Panigale 1299 S weighed 190 kg, while the 1299 Superleggera tipped the scales at only 167 kg, making it the lightest production superbike.

Lower weight results in higher power-to-weight ratio and lower inertia. The bike accelerates faster, can hold higher mid corner speeds and brakes faster.

We may see he new bike during the Ducati 2020 World Premiere on 23rd October.

  • A new Ducati Panigale 959 was spotted undergoing road tests recently.

  • The new bike retains a V-Twin engine instead of a V-Four.

  • The  test mule features a single-sided swingarm.

A new Ducati Panigale 959 was spotted undergoing road tests recently.

While all the ruckus and fanfare surround the Ducati Panigale V4, the Italian marque has not forgotten the baby Panigale 959.

It may sound like a broken record but updating the Panigale 959 is in time for Euro 5 which set to come into force in 2020. Spotting this test mule also confirms that Ducati is sticking with the 90o V-Twin (which Ducati calls it “L-Twin”) instead of a sleeved-down V-Four.

The current 959 is already a hoot to ride, given its 157 hp and 168 kg dry weight, so the new bike should be even more awesome. Rumours has it that the new Superquadro engine ought to produce in the regions of 170 hp.

Its styling mimics the V4’s, with a more rounded nose and larger “eyes.”

However, the most apparent update is the conventional swingarm being ditched for a single-sided one.

We noticed another interesting thing about this test mule, too. It’s running without exhaust silencers! Now, don’t get your knickers in a knot because the production bike must have silencers.

We should able to see the new Ducati Panigale 959 at Intermot or EICMA later this year.

  • The Ducati Panigale V4 was the world’s best-selling sportbike in 2018.

  • 6,100 units were sold out of a total of 9,700 Panigales.

  • However, Ducati’s overall sales dropped 5% due to the slump in the American market.

Forget about the naysayers, the Ducati Panigale V4 proved to be the world’s best-selling sportbike in 2018.

In fact, Ducati was the leading sportbike manufacturer through selling 9,700 Panigale models. That figure corresponds to a 70% increase over 2017. Of those, 6,100 were the new Panigale V4 models. That is remarkable, considering the price of the bikes!

Hence, the Italian manufacturer now holds a 26% market share in the sportbike segment. Yes, 1 of 4 sportbikes is a Panigale.

On another hand, the Multistrada line-up also contributed to Ducati’s overall sales. 11,829 of the sport-tourers were sold in 2018. 6,569 of those were from the new Multistrada 1260 range – a 25% increase.

Unfortunately, Ducati’s overall global sales dropped by 5% to 53,004, which ended an eight-year streak of record sales. The reduction was due to the precipitous 9% drop in American motorcycle sales.

As such, America is no longer Ducati’s biggest market; handing over that title to Italy (4.5% up).

Other growing markets are China (up 23%), Spain (up 8%), Switzerland (up 2.2%) and Japan (up 2%).

The Italian manufacturer has 9 new models in 2019, all equipped with IMU-based traction control and cornering ABS. They are hoping the new bikes will drive up sales for the year.

  • 12 Ducati Panigale V4 S race livery bikes will be auctioned off in conjunction with the World Ducati Week 2018.

  • These race-prepped bikes are designed based on the Ducati riders from MotoGP and WorldSBK.

  • The riders will compete in the Race of Champions tomorrow before the bikes will be publicly-auctioned on eBay.

There are a lot of things that can be said about the latest-generation Ducati Panigale V4. Out of all these things, one thing is for sure; we love it. A LOT. So, what is Ducati’s plan to make their first-ever full production V4 superbike even more special? By coming with 12 special editions! (more…)
