BMW R 18

The BMW R18 has been enjoying successful sales numbers worldwide, if not in Malaysia, since its launch in 2020. However, is there going to be a more powerful BMW R18 in the works to rival the Ducati Diavel and Triumph Rocket 3?

All this talk began after the new BMW Motorrad CEO, Markus Flasch posted a teaser on his Instagram post. Flasch has said before that he is very enthusiastic about motorsports in a recent interview about whether the German automotive giant will enter MotoGP. And in the photo, we see him grinning about something under a cover, besides adding the caption “There is something big coming…”

Although there is not much we can derive from that photo, we can see than the bike’s rear wheel hub and swingarm. Firstly, the swingarm of the current R18 consists of welded steel sections. From Flasch’s post, we can see that the top run of the swingarm is boxed aluminium, while the bottom is a large steel tube bolted onto the hub. Apart from that, the angle of the universal joint of the driveshaft has a different angle.

As such, it shows an articulated (moving) hub akin to the GS series, rather than a fixed hub like the current R18’s.

Next, the rear wheel is different altogether and it appears to hold a much larger tyre. The Diavel and Rocket 3 are both wearing 240mm section tyres and this prototype BMW may seem so, too. As such, the engine needs a lot of torque and power to support that big shoe, hence will BMW hot-rod the R18’s engine?

BMW has some tinkering to do since the Diavel’s engine does 168hp, while Triumph moved the goal post by giving the Rocket 3 Storm 180hp. But BMW can surely do something.

BMW is actively developing two-wheel steering technology for motorcycles, as evidenced by its recent patent applications.

These applications outline numerous potential solutions to the challenges associated with supplying both drive and steering to a motorcycle’s rear wheel. The designs cover a range of bike types, including electric and internal-combustion-engine models, and incorporate various drive systems such as belts, chains, and shafts.

The overarching goal of these designs is to enhance the motorcycle’s steering effect, resulting in improved handling responsiveness and a reduced turning radius.

BMW’s focus on rear-wheel steering is particularly aimed at addressing the handling limitations posed by conventional motorcycles with chopper-style designs, featuring stretched-out forks, a long wheelbase, and pulled-back handlebars.

These design elements typically hinder maneuverability and make the bikes less agile. By introducing rear-wheel steering, BMW aims to achieve tighter turns and more immediate response without compromising the wheelbase. This innovation could greatly benefit cruiser motorcycles, a segment that BMW recently reentered with its R 18 models.

The patent applications also highlight additional advantages of rear-wheel steering, including the potential for improved aerodynamics. Since the rear wheel can now turn, the front wheel’s steering range can be reduced, opening up possibilities for innovative bodywork designs. The system’s ability to provide steerability when the front wheel is off the ground could be advantageous for racing scenarios.

Although rear-wheel steering has been explored in the automotive industry and even attempted in motorcycles in the past, BMW’s comprehensive patent applications demonstrate the company’s serious commitment to this technology.

While it may take time before a two-wheel-steered motorcycle hits the market, BMW’s investment in research and development in this area suggests a strategic effort to gain a competitive edge in the future.

BMW has announced the release of its newest member to the Heritage R 18 family, the R 18 Roctane.

  • The Roctane is a contemporary cruiser style bike, featuring bagger trim without the front fairing.
  • BMW describes the bike as “a cruiser, a bagger, and everything in between.”

The Roctane is equipped with mid-rise bars, a painted hard side case, integrated turn signals, blacked-out engine, dark chrome exhaust, and a 21/18-inch wheelset.

The motorcycle design takes inspiration from BMW’s air/oil cooled boxers from the past, with the large boxer engine as the focal point of the bike.

Metal body panels cover the motorcycle’s exterior, with the standard color being Black Storm Metallic. However, BMW offers options for those who prefer Mineral Grey Metallic Matte or Manhattan Metallic Matte.

With 27-liter bags on each side, the R 18 Roctane is ideal for long-distance rides.

Similar to the base model, the R 18 Roctane is powered by a 1,802cc boxer engine, generating 91 hp and 157Nm of torque.

Despite its classic bodywork, the motorcycle is equipped with modern electronics inlcuding automatic stability control, dynamic brake control, cruise control, torque control assist, dynamic engine brake control, and riding modes, among other electronics features. However, adaptive headlights, hill start control, and reverse assist are optional features for the bike.

The headlight houses an integrated instrument cluster inspired by the 1936 BMW R 5, displaying all relevant information expected of a modern bike. The matte paintwork contrasts with the high-gloss black chassis, adding sophistication to the motorcycle’s look.

BMW is expanding its R 18 range with a new variant called the R 18 Roctane. The Swiss type approval data for the Roctane reveals that it has much in common with the existing R 18 models, but with some notable differences.

  • BMW is expanding its R 18 range with a new variant called the R 18 Roctane.
  • The Roctane is powered by the same 1,802cc air-cooled Boxer as the rest of the R 18 range.
  • The Roctane has a listed gross vehicle weight rating of 560 kg.

Firstly, the Roctane has an internal model code of “0N61,” which suggests that it differs from the other models with a different form factor or a chassis update. Additionally, the Roctane’s name indicates that it may be a more performance-focused model.

The Roctane is powered by the same 1,802cc air-cooled Boxer as the rest of the R 18 range. The homologation filing confirms the same engine code and peak performance numbers as the other models, with a maximum power output of 67 kW (90 hp) at 4,750 rpm, and 116 lb-ft. (157 Nm) at 3,000 rpm.

The filing also confirms that the Roctane has the same silencer code as the Classic, B, and Transcontinental models, indicating that it will have the same straight pipes instead of the bulbous fishtail exhaust on the regular R 18.

The Roctane’s wheel sizes (including accessory options) are the same as the other R 18 models. The type approval data makes no mention of suspension, and the braking data only confirms dual front brakes and ABS. However, if the Roctane is indeed a more performance-oriented cruiser, we can expect the suspension and braking to be different from the rest of the R 18 family.

The Roctane has a listed gross vehicle weight rating of 560kg, which suggests that it will not have luggage. This weight is the same as the R 18 and R 18 Classic models, while the R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental models have a higher GVWR of 630kg due to their non-removable cases.

The Roctane’s release date and pricing have not been announced yet. However, with BMW’s reputation for quality and performance, the R 18 Roctane is expected to be a popular addition to the R 18 range.

Kodlin Bikes, a German company that specializes in motorcycle customization, has unveiled a customized BMW R 18 B at the Daytona Bike Week in Florida.

  • Kodlin Bikes is a German company that specializes in motorcycle customization.
  • The R 18 B Heavy Duty model, designed by Fred Kodlin and his son Len, features an air suspension system and a completely remanufactured upper frame.

Fred Kodlin and his son Len have completed their first collaboration on a BMW model.

The R 18 B Heavy Duty, a bike in typical Kodlin style, features an air suspension system at the front and rear, a completely remanufactured upper frame to lower the seat height, and a sheet metal tank that is longer than the original, among other features.

The design also includes a front spoiler and a 3-colour underfloor lighting system, pinstripes, and an airbrushed pattern on the rear mudguard that combines Kodlin and “100 years of BMW Motorrad.”

The Kodlin team spent three months on the project, with particular attention to detail on the sheet metalwork, including new side covers and custom-made aluminium milled hinge panels.

The R 18 B Heavy Duty was a real father-son project, and the bike’s bolts were all made of stainless steel, with a nice Torx head. The R 18 B loudspeakers by Marshall and an amplifier are also fitted inside the side cases.

The iconic Junkers Ju 52, also known as “Aunt Ju,” was a popular three-engine commercial and transport plane in the 1930s. The D-AQUI aircraft, painted in Lufthansa’s grey-black colour scheme in 1936, gained worldwide recognition.

  • The R 18 ‘Iron Annie’ is inspired by the popular D-AQUI aircraft.
  • The project was initiated by Switzerland-based VTR Motorrad AG & VTR Customs.

During its time in the United States from 1970 to 1984, the aircraft was renamed “IRON ANNIE” by its owner, Martin Caidin, under the American registration N52JU.

A BMW R 18 customization project was initiated by a client of VTR Motorrad AG & VTR Customs, a BMW partner based in Schmerikon, Switzerland, who was inspired by the “IRON ANNIE” aircraft. The project aimed to incorporate aviation-style elements from aircraft construction into the design. The project started with a BMW R 18 First Edition, with the engine removed and painted black. All chrome parts were painted black, while the fork stanchions received a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating.

The tank’s speedometer dial was integrated into the design to resemble old cockpit instruments, while access panels with quick-release fasteners were added, as seen on aircraft. The bike’s unique look was completed by borrowing the corrugated aluminium planking from the Ju 52, a riding saddle-style seat, and grey-black paintwork, all reminiscent of the “IRON ANNIE” aircraft.

To create a streamlined appearance, the cockpit trim was pulled back as narrow and flat as possible, and the bike’s stance was lowered with a shorter fork and a height-adjustable Wilbers shock absorber. Large 18 and 21-inch wheels made by Kineo were added to make the bike appear smaller and more delicate between the wheels. Magura’s racing-style HC3 pumps replaced the standard R 18 brake and clutch fittings, providing further technical enhancements. The speedometer’s dial was customized with a handcrafted piece by watchmaker Zeitzone Zurich.

Creating replica cooling fins in the area of the rear silencers proved to be a significant challenge, as shaping these parts into parallel and aesthetically pleasing radii while harmoniously attaching them took several attempts.

Countless hours of work went into the aluminium sheet metal work, which involved hand-forming the fuel tank, tail with a suggested tail fin of an aeroplane, side panels, and cockpit. The numerous lens-head rivets provide reminiscences of traditional metal aircraft construction.

The team was pleased with the outcome, despite feeling slightly regretful about painting the handmade, bright aluminium sheets. The R 18 IRON ANNIE will receive road approval and undoubtedly attract attention in its new home on Lake Geneva. It will remain a one-of-a-kind model, as promised to the client.

Recently filed trademark registration indicates a new BMW R 12 is on the way, likely a ‘baby’ version of the R 18 cruiser.
