BMW Motorrad and TVS Motors has officially extend their existing partnership to develop and manufacture new models including an EV.

This was confirmed by Dr Markus Schramm, head of BMW Motorrad.

“In light of our fruitful association with TVS Motor Company, we are delighted to extend and expand our cooperation agreement to include long-term partnership and joint development of new platforms and technologies, including electric vehicles.” he said.

 

The German and Indian firm penned a deal back in 2013 and the partnership proven fruitful thanks to the introduction of the entry-level G 310 series in 2018.

The G 310 series was instantly a hit alongside TVS’s own TVS Apache 310 RR, as more than 100,000 units were sold globally.

Meanwhile, the new agreement will not only expand the collaboration but BMW and TVS will showcase revamped technology within the next 24 months including a new range of electric-powered motorcycles.

“In the nine years of our long-term strategic partnership, we have always cherished the common core values we share with BMW Motorrad: focus on quality, engineering prowess, innovation and customer satisfaction.

“These factors and our commitment to deliver superior quality products with a strong value proposition has been key to the success of all three products launched from the platform.  The new world of future mobility encompasses a strong play through alternate solutions, including electric mobility.

“Expanding this successful partnership to EVs and other newer platforms will create opportunities to deliver advanced technology and aspirational products to global markets and bring valuable synergies to both companies,” said Sudarshan Venu, Joint Managing Director TVS Motor Company.

TVS itself is expanding rapidly, a part from the success with BMW Motorrad, the Indian firm also became the new owner of Norton Motorcycles in February 2020.

Under the new guidance, Norton recently unveiled the V4 SCR prototype, which is set to enter production soon and marked a revival of the iconic British brand.

BMW Motorrad has finally unveiled the latest generation of its entry-level motorcycle, the 2021 BMW G 310 R, G 310 GS and the G 310 GS ’40 Years Edition.

Pricing for each model are as follows:

The G 310 range now received significant improvements, including the electronic throttle grip that offers sensitive throttle response and automatic idle speed increase to prevent engine stalling.

The motorcycle also gets a self-boosting anti-hopping clutch that helps reduce engine drag torque, particularly during braking manoeuvres.

Nonetheless, the G310 range continues to be powered by a single-cylinder 313cc, liquid-cooled DOHC capable of producing 34hp @ 9,500rpm and 28Nm @ 7,500rpm.

The G 310 GS now comes with three colour schemes; Kyanite Blue Metallic, Polar White and Cosmic Blac (exclusive to the ’40 Years Edition), while the G 310 R is only available in Limestone Metallic.

Pengeluar motosikal India, TVS Motor Company mengesahkan terdapat perancangan besar melibatkan kerjasama dengan BMW.

Sebelum ini, kedua-dua pengeluar ini menghasilkan G 310 GS dan G 310 R yang dijual dibawah jenama BMW.

BMW G 310 GS merupakan motosikal jenis adventure sementara G 310 R menawarkan ciri naked.

Sementara itu, TVS menawarkan sebuah model jenis sportbike yang dinamakan Apache RR 310 dan baru-baru ini jentera tersebut telah dinaik taraf bagi mematuhi piawaian BS6 India.

Senario itu sekaligus seakan mengesahkan kenyataan Presiden TVS, K.N. Radhakrishnan yang mendedahkan terdapat model baharu yang akan dihasilkan bersama BMW merujuk kepada G 310 RR.

“Dua produk kami bersama BMW mendapat sambutan. Kami telah pun melancarkan Apache RR 310 yang menggunakan platform sama. Mungkin tahun depan, kami akan memperkenalkan varian sama daripada TVS,” jelasnya kepada MoneyControl.

Meskipun ketika ini masih tiada hitam putih namun dengan kejayaan G 310 GS dan G 310 R, tidak hairan jika kerjasama TVS dan BMW bakal merealisasikan G 310 RR yang sebelum ini diperkenalkan dalam bentuk konsep.

Selepas melancarkan BMW R18 beberapa minggu lalu, BMW kini sedang giat menjalankan ujian terhadap model G 310 GS dan G 310 R.

Motosikal BMW sememangnya memiliki reputasi tersendiri terutamanya dalam aspek kualiti tetapi mereka juga tidak terlepas daripada senario memanggil semula beberapa jentera sebelum ini.

Kali ini, jentera yang dipanggil semula melibatkan model mampu milik dalam keluarga BMW.

Baru-baru ini, BMW Motorrad mengumumkan bahawa mereka memanggil semula model G 310 GS (2018-2020), G 310 R (2017-2020) serta beberapa model skuter C 400 X (2019) susulan kebimbangan piston di dalam kaliper brek jenama ByBre yang diguna pakai mudah karat.

Kaliper brek ByBre (atau dikenali ByBrembo) ini turut digunakan beberapa jentera lain antarnaya Bajaj dan KTM.

Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, pemilik hanya perlu ke pengedar BMW Motorrad terdekat untuk menukar ke kaliper brek yang baharu tanpa sebarang caj.

Panggilan semula ini dijangka akan berlaku awal Oktober tetapi mereka yang terkesan dengan isu ini boleh menghubungi khidmat pelanggan BMW untuk pengesahan lanjut.

Buat masa ini, tiada laporan bahawa panggilan semula ini juga melibatkan model G 310 GS dan G 310 R yang terdapat di Malaysia.

It looks like the BMW G 310 range will gain a sportbike, called the G 310 RR.

The BMW G 310 R (roadster) and G 310 GS (adventure) versions were launched to a great reception, not only in Asia where they were first intended but also in Europe and the Americas. Heck, we even saw many G 310 GS entered in the recent GIVI Rimba Raid Mat Daling and they performed well. What is missing from the line-up though is the sport version.

While it has been rumored for some time that the German manufacturer is working on a G 310 RR, they have been very secretive about it, hence there were little news and pictures to reveal the bike.

Well, BMW has dropped a bomb on us. The fully-faired version made its first appearance at BMW Motorrad Days in Japan.

As evident from the photo, the G 310 RR concept’s styling is heavily influenced by its popular sportbike sibling, the S 1000 RR, including the headlamps and the sinewy fairing on the right side complete with the trademark shark gills. Yes, we are sure some may even all it the “Baby S.”

The exhaust has been moved from the side to underneath the seat, and all the bodywork is in carbon fibre.

Speaking about carbon fibre, we do not think the material will be used in the final production bike. Still, having one more entry to the 300cc single-cylinder in the market will definitely light up the lightweight sportbike wars.

The production model should make its debut at the Intermot show at the earliest, or EICMA in November. Let us hope the production model looks as great as this concept!

  • The BMW G 310 GS is the adventure-tourer of the G-family.

  • It is more offroad-oriented than the G 310 R.

  • It is suitable to veteran, returning and new riders.

When people discover that part of my job is to test and review new motorcycles or every kind, their first words would be, “Oh, how lucky you are.”

And then I’d brace myself for the next questions, which invariably includes, “What’s your favourite bike among those you’ve tested?” Uh oh. That’s like the missus asking whether she should go on a diet.

Now, it’s not that I mind sharing my personal Top Ten Bikes (which consists of Triumphs, KTMs, BMWs, Yamahas, Ducatis, et al – not necessarily in that order), nor am I afraid of being called biased and risk angering our advertisers, instead I dread the prospect of having to debate (read: argue) about my choices for two hours. And there’s no place for contravening views or dissent these days – everyone wants to be right and you’re always in the wrong.

On the other hand, there are bikes that are truly worth defending.

When BMW Motorrad launched the G 310 R, the whole world went ga-ga over the prospect of owning a BMW that’s accessible to a wide range of audience, judging from the point of unintimidating power output and of course, price (story of the G 310 R launch here).

Sure enough, BMW Motorrad was inundated with overwhelming orders, justifying their decision to build a small capacity motorcycle. However, the G 310 R couldn’t shake its “BMW for beginners” assumption., although it isn’t by a wide margin.

Then, BMW Motorrad pulled the wraps off the G 310 GS at the Malaysian MotoGP in October this year (story of the launch here). Many took an instant liking to it especially for its looks which consists of many styling cues from its F 800 GS and R 1200 GS brethren.

But the questions from the market are “Good no cheap, cheap no good, right?” based on the Chinese saying of, “Yat cham chin yat cham for (1 sen for a 1 sen good).” The second question is, “Has BMW Motorrad compromised on their quality?”

Okay. It’s time to address these queries.

First up, yes, the G 310 GS is based on the G 310 R (R for roadster), which means both share many common components, including the 313cc, DOHC, 4-valve, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. It’s worth mentioning that the cylinder block is rotated by 180-degrees for the exhaust to face the rear and throttle body to the front. The whole block is also tilted backwards into the frame, for better mass centralization and lower center of gravity.

Another positive consequence is a much more compact power and drivetrain unit, since there isn’t the need to create a space if the exhaust was up front. From this, BMW Motorrad could use a longer swingarm for more stability, while still maintaining a short wheelbase for agility and front wheel feel.

The frame of the G 310 GS is similar to the roadster’s but the suspension has gained extra travel by 41 mm up front and 48mm out back, to a total of 180 mm on both ends. The front is suspended by non-adjustable upside forks, while the rear shock is adjustable for preload only. Seat height is 835 mm.

But how does it perform since it’s wearing the infamous “GS” (for Gelände/Straße – offroad/road) moniker? Does the G 310 GS deserve that honour?

Approaching the bike for the first time, it looked pretty much like any of BMW’s adventure-tourer bike, especially the R 1200 GS. Its profile is slim and tall, with many wedges in its lines. Getting on confirmed that it was tall, but it wasn’t difficult to lift off the sidestand since its super light (170 kg wet weight).

The single-cylinder engine fired up without fuss, but it needed some revs to get going. Out there on the road, the long travel suspension was supple leaning towards soft and soaked up every bump. Slamming the bike into fast corners produced a perceptible compression while the Metzeler Tourance tyres dug into the road. But there was hardly any wobble. However, the front forks dived quickly under hard braking. Those Bybre brakes are good!

With maximum revs is at 10,000 RPM, 130 km/h comes up at 8,000 RPM. At this juncture, you’re reminded by the buzziness in the handlebar and footpegs that you are riding a single. It didn’t numb my hands, but I believe the addition of dampers to the handlebar mount would be sweet. Torque is commendable, although you need to be in the correct gear.

But oh my, the bike was really agile. The biggest fun about riding it on the daily commute was the enjoyment of sitting high up over traffic, giving you a view far ahead. Besides that, you could actually swing the Baby GS in and out of traffic. Ah, the joys of a lightweight bike. The seats are pretty comfortable too.

We’ve tested its Strasse capabilities so it’s now over to the Gelande part.

Where’s the best place to do some offroading? At Oh Kah Beng’s Most Fun Gym, of course. We had also wanted “Foreman” Oh or KB, as some call him, to ride the G 310 GS and provide his feedback since he’s the Sifu. KB had also trained his nephew, Oh Jin Sheng who went to qualify second on the first day of the BMW Motorrad GS Trophy Asia Qualifier.

But KB was caught up at the bank when we arrived so we decided to go ahead and ride the bike around the basic flat-track course.

I started out gingerly since the tyres were 50/50 offroad/road, compared to knobbies. Apart from that, the seat is rather far behind compared to a pure-bred motocrosser, hence I had some reservations if I could really lean the bike into dirt corners. (Cornering in the dirt calls for the rider to sit as up front as possible and stick out his inside leg to put more weight on the front tyre.)

But as soon as it hit the first berm it was apparent that the G 310 GS was setup towards offroading. Standing up on the straights the bike exhibited a totally natural balance at both ends. I went faster and faster, even did a couple of small jumps as confidence picked up.

The track’s surface was dry with loose soil and sand, but the tyres surprisingly slipped very little. I had to kick my leg further out to displace my weight and give it lots of throttle to slide the rear around. Otherwise, it was as if the bike has traction control (it doesn’t, it only has ABS).

While the suspension soaked up the bumps on the road, on the offroad course it was magic! It ran over those offroad bumps as if they weren’t there. It suddenly didn’t matter that the fuel tank was tall and slightly long, the G 310 GS was amazingly well-balanced whether I was seated or standing up (as I’ve mentioned earlier).

The only gripe I had with running it offroad was the road-oriented rear sprocket size. For true offroading, a 4-teeth bigger sprocket would provide the punch out of corners by rear wheel slide-steering.

KB showed up a little later in the afternoon, a bit agitated from his experience at the bank.

But his expression lit up as soon as he saw the G 310 GS, “Whoa, that’s a beautiful bike! Really looks very close to the R 1200 GS.”

He didn’t waste time in suiting up and hopping on. “The seat’s a little tall for most Malaysians, but the rear shock compresses when you sit on it, like a motocrosser’s.”

As soon as he hit the corner berm, he remarked, “Wow! The balance!” He proceeded to traverse down a steep slope. Both of us wanted to find out about the ground clearance. Nothing touched down.

Next, KB rode the bike down a trail behind the “pit building.” A trail that I would never for the life of me ride on. He just kept going, “Wow this is really good,” and continued on up the hill to the Expert’s Course. He kept riding steadily without jumping, “I don’t want to risk bottoming out the suspension and injuring the bike,” he explained.

And he just kept going and going, with a smile underneath his MX helmet, while I chased him around to grab a few shots.

When he finally pulled in, there were nothing but superlatives from him. “This bike is truly amazing. It soaked up the bumps, it steered beautifully, gripped a lot, and the throttle was very smooth.” (A smooth throttle response is of utmost importance when riding offroad or on slippery surfaces.)

His conclusion was, “It may be an affordable bike at 29K, but it felt like something way more expensive. Plus, it’s really pretty. BMW should extend a test bike at MFG so those who visit MFG could take a look at it. It’s capabilities and quality.”

If a racing legend and super coach who has done it all, seen it all says that, then the G 310 GS is truly special. The bike truly caters to both new and veteran riders. It’s practical for the daily commute, comfortable for long-distance rides and fully capable when the paved road disappears.

Just like in the opening story, the BMW G 310 GS is one bike worth defending – not because it’s a BMW.

Sepang, 27 October 2017 – BMW Motorrad Malaysia unveiled three new motorcycles at the Malaysian MotoGP 2017 this weekend. The all-new BMW HP4 Race, the all-new BMW G 310 GS and the new BMW S 1000 XR were all unveiled for the first time in Malaysia at the annual MotoGP in Sepang International Circuit.

 

Introducing the new premium motorcycles, Owen Riley, Head of BMW Motorrad Malaysia said, “If the MotoGP is the largest motorcycle racing event in Malaysia, then it is only natural that the event is also where BMW Motorrad Malaysia will have our biggest presence and showing of the year. The all-new BMW S 1000 RR HP4 Race represents a purebred racing bike with only  750 units ever produced. The motorcycles are individually crafted by a small, highly specialised team to ensure the very highest level of performance and reliability on the racetrack.

The HP4 RACE offers a purebred racing engine similar to specifications 6.2 and 7.2 as in the Endurance and World Superbike Championships (WSBK). The peak output is 158 kW (215 hp) at 13900 rpm. The maximum torque of 120 Nm is reached at 10000 rpm. The maximum RPM has been increased from 14200 to 14500 RPM,  compared to the standard S 1000 RR. A 6-speed close-ratio racing gearbox is used with optimised ratios and various secondary ratios.

While engine and electronics are in the same category as the current superbike factory racebikes, The S 1000 RR HP4 Race does one better by featuring a carbon fibre frame. In fact, weighing 171 kilograms when fully fuelled and track ready, the new HP4 RACE is even lighter than the factory racing bikes.

The new BMW HP4 RACE likewise meets the highest demands of racing technology in the area of suspension and brakes. Both the Öhlins FGR 300 upside-down fork and TTX 36 GP rear shock are identical to those used in the WSBK and MotoGP. The light alloy underslung swingarm made of milled and sheet metal parts is also a component used in WSBK. Featuring two Brembo GP4 PR monobloc brake calipers, the brake system of new HP4 RACE also has parts otherwise only to be found in WSBK machines. Coated titanium pistons and single-piece aluminium calipers with chemically nickel-plated surface make for what is currently the very best combination of materials available. In conjunction with 6.75 mm thick 320 millimetre T-type racing steel brakes, the system ensures stunning brake performance.

The new BMW HP4 RACE comes with an extensive package of electronic control and assistance systems as well as a weight-optimised on-board electrical system which has been optimised to meet racing needs. A wealth of information is available on the 2D dashboard (data-logger) with transferable data memory.

The GS range of BMW Motorrad motorcycles represent a promise of perfect functioning, reliability and robustness. The BMW G 310 GS transfers these qualities to the below-500cc capacity segment, embracing in its own distance, mature interpretation. A highly contemporary product with a level of versatility that is currently unrivalled in the segment. It is nimble and agile in city traffic, while supremely robust over light terrain. The centerpiece of the new BMW G 310 GS is the 313cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valves, single-cylinder engine. A salient feature of the single-cylinder engine in the BMW G 310 GS is the fact that its cylinder is tilted to the rear and its cylinder head is rotated by 180 degrees: intake at the front, outlet at the rear. This configuration follows the logic that a straight, power-enhancing supply of fresh air-fuel mixture and also has positive consequences in terms of the bike’s architecture. With an output of 25kW (34bhp) at 9,500 RPM and a maximum torque of 28Nm at 7,500 RPM, the engine of the new BMW G 310 GS is the ideal partner for dynamic riding pleasure, in conjunction with the low unladen weight of 169.5kg (373lbs.).

In terms of its suspension, the G 310 GS utilises a tubular steel spaceframe with bolt-on rear section that combines torsional rigidity with robust quality. Given its good stiff balance, this provides the basis for excellent ride stability and a precise steering response. The front suspension uses upside-down forks, while at the rear shock is mounted directly to the aluminium swingarm.

With a high front fender, striking flyline and short, high rear, the G 310 GS features classic elements of its big GS sibling models. Its compact proportions with a short wheelbase, a 19-inch front wheel and extended suspension travel makes a comfortable ride over bad road surfaces. The G 310 GS is also designed for the world market, it is compatible with diverse fuel qualities as well as meets all emissions standards and local requirements.

The BMW G 310 GS is available in three strikingly expressive colour variants: Cosmic Black non-metallic, Racing Red non-metallic and the elaborately designed Pearl White metallic. These variants offer a spectrum ranging from sporty and robust to contemporary.

The New BMW S 1000 XR. Adventure Sport Further Refined.

With the introduction of the BMW S 1000 XR in 2015, BMW Motorrad offered its own new interpretation of the sport-touring range, not least adding a powerful dose of emotion into the mix.

Even more potent now, the new S 1000 XR offers a new in-line 4-cylinder engine which meets the EU4 requirements. However, reduction in emissions does not necessarily mean a reduction in power. The output is now rated at 165 bhp (121 kW) at 11,000 RPM.

The new XR sees an increase of 10 kg in both the maximum permissible weight and the payload of the bike for more luggage hauling capability. Softer isolating elements on the handlebars effectively reduce vibrations from being passed onto the rider’s hands.

The new S 1000 XR is available in a new colour offering of refined Ocean Blue metallic matt which gives the Adventure Sport touring bike a more distinctively refined appearance.
