The market for maxi-scooters is expanding, with new models continually entering the fray. Among the latest offerings is the E125 from Zontes, a Chinese manufacturer fast gaining traction not only in Malaysia but on the global stage as well. Zontes positions the E125 as an entry-level contender in the maxi-scooter domain, sharing its platform with the larger E350 model.

Focusing on rider comfort for both short commutes and long journeys, Zontes emphasizes the E125’s ergonomic design, aiming to blend comfort with a hint of sportiness. Powering the scooter is a compact 125cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with a four-valve cylinder head, generating 14.6 horsepower. Enhancing performance and efficiency, Bosch’s MSE 8.0 Electronic Fuel Injection system ensures smooth and reliable operation.

Technological features are abundant in the E125, including a full-colour TFT display offering four modes and Screen Mirroring capability for comprehensive ride information. Additionally, a tire pressure monitoring system and ambient temperature readout contribute to rider awareness and safety. The scooter’s suspension duties include telescopic front forks and a dual rear shock assembly with adjustable preload.

Safety is provided by front and rear disc brakes supplemented by dual-channel ABS. Illuminating the path ahead is a six-focus LED headlight, accompanied by a built-in DRL to enhance visibility to other road users. Moreover, the scooter boasts an electronically adjustable windscreen and handguards for added wind protection.

Set to debut in global showrooms by late January 2024, the Zontes E125 offers an enticing proposition at an MSRP of 19,254 Malaysian Ringgit but that might change if and when the E125 hits the Malaysian market.

Zontes Malaysia launched the ZT350E in 2023, so with the company switching its attention to commuters, the 125 could just find its way here.

Zontes Malaysia has just rolled out its latest offerings for the urban commuting and touring enthusiasts with the introduction of the Zontes 350D and Zontes 350E scooters.

  • Tailored to cater to the needs of the middle-class rider, these new additions are set to make a mark in the two-wheeler market.
  • The Zontes 350D and 350E are now available in Malaysia priced at RM23,800 and RM25,800 respectively, these scooters offer an enticing blend of performance, style, and practicality.

Under the hood, the 350D and 350E share a common heart – a robust liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine boasting a displacement of 349 cc.

*Zontes 350D

Fueled by advanced electronic fuel injection (EFI), this power plant delivers an impressive 36 horsepower and 38 Nm of torque, ensuring a spirited yet efficient ride. Power is seamlessly transmitted to the rear wheel via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) gearbox and belt drive system, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience on the road.

*Zontes 350E

In terms of design and features, the Zontes 350D and 350E exude distinct personalities while sharing a common DNA. The 350D, weighing in at 190 kg, offers a choice of two sleek color options – silver or black. Its 12-liter fuel tank provides an estimated 400 km travel range in Eco mode, making it a reliable companion for daily commuting and short rides.

On the other hand, the 350E, tipping the scales at 203 kg, boasts a longer 1,565 mm wheelbase and a bigger 16L fuel tank, which leans towards enhancing its touring capabilities. Touring enthusiasts will appreciate the generous underseat storage space, accommodating up to two full-face helmets, totaling a substantial 50 liters.

Additionally, the 350E features twin water-resistant pockets in the front cowl, offering a collective two-liter capacity for stowing away essentials.

Both models come equipped with keyless start functionality, further enhancing convenience. The electronically adjustable windshield adapts to varying riding conditions, while the dual 18W USB charging ports, catering to both Type A and Type C connections, ensure that riders stay connected on the go.

The cockpit experience is enriched by a full-color TFT-LCD screen with mobile phone mirroring capability, adding a modern touch to the rider’s interface.

Safety and performance are paramount in the Zontes 350D and 350E. Braking duties are handled by J.Juan radial-mount four-piston brake calipers paired with brake discs both at the front and rear.

The two-channel ABS system comes as standard, providing confident stopping power. The riding suite is further enhanced with features such as traction control, tire pressure monitoring, and comprehensive LED lighting all around, ensuring optimal visibility and control.

  • top box (RM2,175)
  • handguard assembly set (RM137.20)
  • rear splash guard (RM473.80)
  • headlight cover (RM94.25)
  • front disc brake protective cover (RM133.90)
  • front fender extension (RM82)
  • fornt fender extension front section (RM127.60)

Zontes Malaysia has officially launched the ZT155-G, ZT155-U and ZT155-U1 for the local market.

Priced at RM10,888, all three models come with different designs and features committed to fulfilling the needs of riders in the country.

Interestingly, all three variant shares the same (now Euro5) 155cc single-cylinder and water-cooled engine that makes 18.8hp @ 9,250rpm
and 16Nm @ 7,500rpm.

Zontes ZT155-G

The ZT155-G caught our attention the most as the scrambler-type motorcycle not only comes with modern technology but also a massive 20L fuel tank.

Zontes claimed the ZT155-G can easily reach a distance of 1000km on a full tank, making it the ultimate daily commuter motorcycle for the public.

The ZT155-G also features a slipper clutch, crash bar, digital speedometer, two riding modes (Eco, Sport), forged handguard, two fast-charging USB ports, and dual-channel ABS.

Zontes ZT155-U

Unlike the ZT155-G that brings a neo-retro look, the ZT155-U is a naked bike.

Despite missing out on the massive 20L tank, its 12.5L tank is still huge in comparison to other models in the 155cc segment.

The ZT155-U features a radical design similar to its bigger sibling, the ZT310-R.

It also comes equipped with an all-LED light, digital tachometer, rear-hugger, two riding modes (Eco and Sport), slipper clutch, forged handguard, dual fast-charging USB port and dual ABS.

Interestingly, its 830mm seat height helps to create similar riding ergonomics to a bigger capacity motorcycle. Thanks to a kerb weight of just 117kg, the ZT155-U is definitely an easy bike to handle.

Zontes ZT155-U1

According to Zontes Malaysia, the ZT155-U1 is a fun mini-motard motorcycle.

While it shares the same simple steel cradle frame and body panels as the ZT155-U, the U1 comes with additional features to make it a motard.

At the front sits a long beak to create the motard-ish look while the wheels are fitted with knobby tires to increase the bike capabilities off-road.

The ZT155-U1 also misses out on the 20L and shares the same 12.5L fuel tank as the ZT155-U.

Interestingly, the ZT155-U1 comes in three colour options, Yellow, Orange and Red.

The entire range of ZT155 is now available at all 11 authorised dealers in Malaysia.

  • fork upside/down (USD)
  • monoshock
  • rim 17″ – 110/70 depan, 130/70 belakang
  • ABS dwi-saluran

  • Zontes Malaysia and the Selangor state JPJ (Road Transport Department of Malaysia) sent a safe balik kampung message ahead of Hari Raya Puasa.

  • Event was held at the Bukit Jelutong Toll Plaza.

  • Zontes, JPJ and Prolintas handed out packages to motorists.

Zontes Malaysia and the Selangor state JPJ (Road Transport Department of Malaysia) sent a safe balik kampung message ahead of Hari Raya Puasa.

The proceedings took place today at the Bukit Jelutong Toll Plaza, as it’s the gateway to the Guthrie Corridor Expressway. JPJ officers gave away packages by Zontes Malaysia, the Guthrie Corridor Expressway concessionaire Prolintas Sdn. Bhd. and JPJ themselves.

Drivers were wished Selamat Hari Raya and to drive safely during their journeys back home for the celebrations. They rather surprised that to receive such packages from the JPJ. Many had expression of doubt and even fear when they saw JPJ officers waiting at the toll booths.

Indeed, many motorcycles were using the main carriageway instead of the fully-functional motorcycle lane. A number of riders made illegal U-turns against the traffic upon seeing the officers. Some even sped past the officers when waved to stop to receive packages It was an embarrassing and frustrating scene for those present at the event.

However, those who did use the motorcycle lanes received the packages and a well-earned pat on the back by the JPJ officers, besides being wished a good journey.

PICTURE GALLERY

  • We rode the new Zontes ZT310-T, Zontes ZT310-X, Zontes ZT310-R.

  • We came away impressed by the build quality, ride quality and smooth power delivery.

  • Does this hark as the new standard for 300cc motorcycles?

What’s the best to convince someone to buy a product? Test it first. That’s especially true for motorcycles and we had the opportunity to test the Zontes ZT310-T, Zontes ZT310-X, Zontes ZT310-R on a trip.

If you haven’t heard of Zontes yet, let’s get you up to speed quickly.

The brand is one among a number marketed by Guangdong Tayo Motorcycle Technology Co., Ltd. Yes, it’s based in China. We’ve visited the factory and came away impressed at not only the scale of the operations, but the principles, ideas and diligence behind it all, too.

Since then, the three models (four including the ZT310-X GP) are selling well. Those customers dropped their bookings as soon as after they test rode the bikes.

However, there may you out there who haven’t the opportunity, so that’s what this review is all about.

The Bikes

Zontes Malaysia arranged four bikes for us. Two ZT310-T adventure-tourer, one ZT310-X sport-tourer and the naked ZT310-R.

Zontes ZT310-X

The two ZT310-Ts were equipped with the aluminium top box and panniers. They are the same as what the customers will receive when they buy the bike.

The Ride

The plan called for us to ride from Petaling Jaya to Lemang To’ki at Bentong, Pahang, via the Karak Highway. There was a stop for photography after To’ki, before heading back.

Riding Impression

We found the seating position was very natural. The ergonomics made it easy to reach the handlebars, being seated in the correct position and a nice placement of the legs. It seems that the models were designed for Asians in mind.

Zontes ZT310-T

I drew the ZT310-T. The bike fired up quickly to a brisk idle, but it was so smooth for a single-cylinder engine. There was no gnashing or nasty noises. The twin exhaust tips emitted a nice growl instead of the typical single-cylinder staccato.

We needed only a very light pull of the clutch lever. Tapped in first gear – the gear shift was so light yet very positive.

The bike didn’t need you to slip the clutch to get going. There seemed to be plenty of torque despite being a single. I even tested rolling away by just releasing the clutch slowly without opening the throttle. The bike rolled forward without killing the engine.

A light flick upwards on the gear lever and second gear was in. Gear shifting was feather-light, requiring gentle pressure only. I was surprised and expected the gearbox to pop into a false neutral, but it didn’t!

The throttle and engine response was also very impressive. The bike pulled away cleanly each time and accelerated relatively hard in the first three gears.

But what truly impressed was the suspension. The rear shock provided a solid feel when we climbed on and didn’t squat under our weight. It didn’t feel “squishy” when hopped up and down, either. We feared that it might be too stiff – until we hit the first pothole.

I gritted my teeth as I neared the offending patch, but the forks soaked it up and the rear shock did so too. Unsatisfied, I sought out potholes and bumps on purpose and tried again. Nothing… no kick to the kidney or bottoming out. It meant that the suspension’s damping rates are well sorted.

As we continued our journey, we were supposed to ride the on the DUKE Highway directly to the Karak Highway. However, the lead marshal took a wrong turn and we ended up riding along Jalan Gombak. We had to encounter traffic light after traffic light. But it was a great experience as the Zontes bikes showed its character in urban riding.

First, the engine didn’t get overly hot when we stopped for long periods of time. The windscreens on the ZT310-X and ZT310-T worked flawlessly as we raised it and dropped it over and over.

Secondly, there was plenty of pull from the single-cylinder engine. Of course, we met plenty of LC135s and “Y-Suku” along this stretch but none of them could keep up. Even those with loud pipes.

We soon got onto Karak Highway and this was where we tested what almost every Malaysian motorcyclists’ favourite question, “What’s the top speed?”

The “robot’s” face

We gave the Zontes bikes full throttle through the gears, even up-shifted without using the clutch. The engine and exhaust gave a rather pleasant burble and roar as the bars filled the digital tachometer. There was relatively little vibration even at high RPMs.

We hit the advertised 165 km/h top speed. The ZT310-X had all three aluminium luggage on and it still hit 145 km/h easily, before pulling slowly to 151 km/h.

Sure, some may say the Y-Suku can hit 140 km/h, but that’s just part of the story. The Zontes 313cc engine has more torque and what matters is how quickly it reaches a given speed compared to a 150cc engine. To give you an example, all superbikes are limited to 299 km/h. But the supercharged H2 can reach that speed much quicker than any other superbike.

Understand?

All along the way, I still kept looking for bumps and ripples on the road to find a way to unsettle the suspension. It didn’t happen. At no point didn’t it feel clunky like some cheap, wooden suspension. Really impressive.

Along with the suspension, the handling was equally impressive. They needed hardly any steering input to turn! It was just like riding bigger kapchais. We suspected that the stiff steel frame also contributed to this. It was so easy to maneuver that I kept forgetting I had panniers on.

As for the brakes, it needed a harder tug than its contemporaries. But we found it to be good enough.

We took another blast back to our morning RV, which meant another round of engine torture.

All Zontes ZT310 models feature Bosch dual-channel ABS

But the engine sounded exactly the same after our mad ride. It didn’t seem to lose even a single drop of oil. All panels and fasteners stayed where they were, none came lose. The engine didn’t vibrate and cause numbness. We didn’t feel like we just wrestled with bikes that are hardly controllable. Not once did the bikes feel like they were going to disintegrate.

Conclusion

All four Zontes models held up to our abuse and the quality was as advertised. It may be difficult for some to believe since it’s a Chinese brand, but we were equally surprised to find that it was actually pretty good.

Left hand switch block

Of course, there were some rough edges, but remember that the ZT310 line-up is Guangdong Tayo’s first 310cc model and it was only launched last year. Since then it has sold more than 100,000 units in China alone, while more than 20,000 have been exported.

At the end of it, it’s something that we couldn’t complain about, given its price point while having so many good features. Additionally, the quality will give many established brands something to consider. Looks like they are the game changer for the lightweight segment.

Great value for money!

  • We couldn’t provide clear photos of the Zontes models during the launch last week.

  • But we visited the brand’s factory in Guangdong, China.

  • Here are they are in the open.

Zontes Malaysia launced the new range of Zontes Motorcycles last week, but no one was able to grab clear photos due to the dark lighting condition in the hall.

But we had the honour of visiting the Zontes factory in Guangdong, China over the weeked. There, the manufacturer prepared the range of models for us to test.

They arranged the ZT310-T, ZT310-R, and ZT310-X models outside the factory. These are the initially models sold in Malaysia. There is also the ZT310-V power cruiser, which may make its way to our shores in the future.

By the way, the manufacturer, Guangdong Tayo Motorcycle Technology Co., Ltd. makes other brands of motorcycles, too. However, the Zontes brand is the flagship.

So, they are in all their glory.

ZT310-X

The ZT310-X is the sport-tourer of the family, hence the full fairing, and long wide seat.

ZT310-T

The ZT310-T is the adventure/dual-sport model. Many have remarked that it looks like the R 1200 GS at first glance, but look closer and you can spot many differences.

The ZT310-T is easy to ride and not too tall. But there are two seat heights available

ZT310-R
