yamaha r25

  • The Yamaha YZF-R25/R3 has been unchanged since 2015.

  • Pictures have surfaced in Indonesia pertaining to be the “new YZF-R3” for 2019.

  • If Yamaha goes ahead with the plans, expect to see updated components and styling.

The ever-popular Yamaha YZF-R3 (YZF-R25 in Malaysia) has been around for a few years and may well see a facelift for 2019, as photos have surfaced in Indonesia.

If Yamaha does adhere to the design the picture, the new bike’s styling brings it closer to the manufacturer’s other supersport models, namely the YZF-R6 and YZF-R1 besides the YZR-M1 in MotoGP.

Additionally, taking a cue from current industry standards, it may well feature full-LED lighting. Will it also have an updated instrument console? Perhaps. How about an upgraded chassis? Who knows.

But the biggest question would be regarding its displacement, of course.

The 250- to 400cc category is hotly contested, with Yamaha’s rivals Kawasaki now offering both the Ninja 250 and Ninja 400, while KTM has the 390 Duke and RC 390. Even Modenas has the Dominar D400. Hence, there has been much speculation that we may well see a sub-400cc R4 because how else could one compete if the others have higher capacities?

But there’s a problem if it goes 400. While Yamaha offers the R3 or the speculated R4 in other countries, we will be inadvertantly stuck with the 250cc version. This is the same with other manufacturers as well, except for KTM. It’s such a disaster that we won’t get to experience the bikes’ full potential due to riders who are resistant to upgrade their license to “full-B” hence small capacity bikes are stuck at the 250cc ceiling. But the silly thing is that these are the very same cretins who complain about not having bigger capacity bikes in Malaysia compared to our neighbours.

The new R3/R4 should break covers at the AIM Expo in Las Vegas, so stay tuned.

Take a good long look at this bike as it is going to be the base bike for the upcoming BMW baby sports bike – the 313cc sports bike based on the G310R.

Word on the grapevine is suggesting that TVS Motor Company, the same company that assembles the G310R in India, is officially putting this bike into production as the TVS Apache RTR 300.

Based on the BMW G310R, the Apache RTR 300 will be powered by the same 313cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine as the G310R. Though both the engine and gearbox will eventually offer unique power figures different from the G310R, in its existing state of tune however, the BMW motor produces 31bhp and 28Nm of torque.

According to Indian website Rush Lane, the final production version of the Apache RTR 300 is expected to retain much of the dramatic bodywork shown in the pictures here as the Akula 310 factory racer concept which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2016 in India. According to Rush Lane, the bike will retain its twin headlamps, tall windshield, chiselled fuel tank, split seats, LED taillights and a stubby exhaust. ABS and sticky tyres could be offered as options.

When it is launched the Apache RTR 300 will take the fight to the KTM RC390, Yamaha R25, Honda CBR250RR and the Kawasaki 250.

The TVS model is unlikely to make it to Malaysia based on current conditions, but we are excited to see the BMW spin-off of this bike. Expected date of arrival in Malaysia will be sometime in the second or third quarter of 2017. As for the name of the bike, how does BMW S310RR sound?

Recently we did an article about ten bikes we can look forward to in 2015. In that article we mentioned that we might get the Yamaha R25 in Malaysia.

Well guess what? We might be seeing it soon as just a few hours ago a friend of BikesRepublic, spotted and captured a picture of what looks like the Yamaha R25 being tested on the road.

According to MaztaGee, he saw three bikes with different colour scheames, white and blue combo like in the picture, white and red combo and a black unit.

The bikes were on the Guthrie Corridoor Expressway heading to Shah Alam.

The R25 is powered by a liquid cooled, 250cc parallel-twin engine generating about 36hp and 22.6 Nm of torque.

Currently being assembled in Indonesia, it was launched there last year where the bike orders quickly exceeded supply in less then 24hours of its launch.

More info as it comes, so keep on tuning into Bikes Republic.
