  • The Valentino Rossi VR46 Moto2 team will field a special livery for the Mugello round.

  • The livery takes after the Italian tricolore flag.

  • Rider Luca Marini has the honour of riding the bike.

Fans of Valentino Rossi know that the flamboyant racer and multiple world champion will spring a surprise new helmet design when MotoGP reaches Mugello. But this time, there’s also a special livery for his VR46 Moto2 team.

The one-off livery consists of green, white and red colours as per the Italian tricolore flag, to mark the team’s home round. Rider Luca Marini has been riding with the blue and black Sky VR46 livery thus far, so we wonder if his leathers will match the special paint scheme.

Marini is the maternal half-brother of Valentino Rossi. He is currently lying in 9th in the Moto2 championship this year and has yet to score a podium finish. Contrastingly, he finished five times on the podium including one win at the Malaysian round at the Sepang International Circuit.

His teammate in 2018 was Francesco Bagnaia who won eight races besides finishing each one of them on his way to being crowned the Moto2 champion. Bagnaia has moved up to MotoGP this year, riding for Alma Pramac Racing and partnering Jack Miller on the Ducati Desmosedici.

Kenny Roberts, or King Kenny, needs no introduction. The three time 500cc world champion is also the the first ever American to win a MotoGP race, and his riding style changed the way GP bikes are ridden.

In the year 2000, King Kenny was named a Grand Prix legend by the FIM.

So when King Kenny speaks, the world listens.

In a recent interview with crash.net (the excerpts of which are below) at the American MotoGP round in Circuit of the Americas, King Kenny was quoted as saying that MotoGP racing has never been better.

“Unbelievable. It’s never been better. I mean the talent of the riders, the equipment… MotoGP’s obviously the best show in the world now.”

Kenny, who turned to rider development and then team owner, is still intrigued by the technical side of MotoGP.

He says he loves the new aerodynamics packages on modern MotoGP bikes, “I was ahead of my time [with investing resources in aerodynamics] but we didn’t have enough money to make it all work.

“We had one of the three-cylinders designed by Lotus and it was ten miles an hour quicker at Barcelona down the straight, but it wouldn’t stop. And we didn’t have the budget with Lotus to find out why it wouldn’t stop.”

“It was a funny thing because you’d sit there and look at it going ‘why is the back end coming off the ground?’ No-one knew. There’s a lot to it. They’ve just scratched the surface, in my opinion.”

In the interview, Kenny also mentioned that any of the current top six bikes can be easily adapted to any riding style by a top rider.

“You can make the bike, whatever you need it to be,” he said. “It’s just work and setting the bike up.

“From the little bit I know, the Japanese could not ride my motorcycles because the steering head was too steep. They just couldn’t ride it. It would shake too much and if it shook, they didn’t like it. Eddie couldn’t ride it.

“I think that with any of the [current] motorcycles, with a little bit of work on it, you’d have the same thing. It’s a lot harder to ride. It’s a lot harder on your body. But you are faster. So I think any of them would do that.”

Kenny was legendary for his dirt-track riding style, so crash.net asked him if anyone on track reminds him of himself?

“No, you could never ride as hard as they ride now with my equipment,” he replied.

“If my ’80 bike, the first with aluminium, had the grip these bikes had it would go ‘boing’ and away it would go. Which it actually did with me a couple of times. If you had too much grip, the flex would be so much it would spring back. So with these [modern] tyres you couldn’t ride that motorcycle.

“I think, from my standpoint, Marquez probably comes closest to throwing the bike in. Making it turn. And exiting. Which is what I tried to do… I wasn’t quite as good at it!”

And does he think Marquez can be beaten?

“Yes [Marquez can be beaten] but it’s going to be him beating himself, it looks like to me. Somebody is going to have to really step up and put the pressure on him that he needs to make a mistake and right now I don’t see that happening…”

  • Alex Rins won the MotoGP race at the 2019 Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas.

  • Marc Marquez crashed out with 12 laps to go.

  • Valentino Rossi finished second.

Marc Marquez had hoped for a perfect record at the Grand Prix of the Americas, but a mistake at Turn 12 destroyed that record, leaving Alex Rins to win.

He had done what he does best by taking the holeshot at the start and took off into the distance, followed by Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha), Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda), Jack Miller (Lamborghini Pramac Ducati) and Alex Rins (Suzuki Ecstar).

Crutchlow would crash out with 15 laps to go, leaving the other three riders to battle for the remaining podium spots.

By 12 laps to go, Marquez led by 3.6 seconds and the race looked like it was going to be another boring procession. Suddenly a roar went up in the crowds and the TV screens showed a Repsol rider picking his bike off the ground. It turned out to be Marquez!

He tried time and again to pick his bike up but fell back down on the ground and finally gave up.

Replays showed that he had locked the front wheel while trail braking into the first gear Turn 12.

It was a bad day for the Repsol Honda team as Jorge Lorenzo’s bike broke down a lap later.

Marquez’s crash left a nail-biting battle between Valentino Rossi and Alex Rins. Rins had dispatched of Jack Miller. With 6 laps to go, Rins’s team sent a message to select “Mapping 3” and started to stalk Rossi closely.

Rins finally made a move with 4 laps to go. Rossi replied with a repass by couldn’t hold his line and that let Rins off the hook.

Rossi’s tyre’s were cooked by now but he didn’t let it go down without a fight. Rins was able to open up a lead of 0.7 second but Rossi managed to pull back 0.25 second in braking down to Turn 12. However, Rins was able to hold on and claim his very first MotoGP win.

Behind them, Jack Miller held on for his first podium in the dry and on a Ducati while keeping himself just out of reach of Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati). Dovizioso started the race from 13th on the grid.

Franco Morbidelli rounded out the Top 5.

  • Marc Marquez destroyed the field in the 2019 Argentina MotoGP.

  • Valentino Rossi celebrated his 23 years in GP racing by finishing 2nd on the podium.

  • Andrea Dovizioso finished 3rdafter nursing his worn tyres.

While many had expected reigning MotoGP champion to win at the 2019 Argentina MotoGP, no one had thought he’d destroy the entire field. He left the riders behind him to fight tooth and nail for the last two podium positions, ending with Valentino Rossi claiming second place ahead of Andrea Dovizioso on the final lap.

Putting the nightmares of last season and the start of the weekend behind him, Marquez (Repsol Honda) blasted into the lead from the get-go and never looked back. He led as much as 12 seconds before backing off in the last few laps to take the chequered flag.

The battle for second and third position ensued among Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha), Andrea Dovizioso (Team Winnow Ducati), Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Sepang Yamaha Racing Team), Maverik Vinalez (Monster Energy Yamaha), Danilo Petrucci (Team Winnow Ducati), Jack Miller (Pramac Ducati) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda).

The group saw multiple position changes throughout the race, including trading paint and leaving tyre marks on rivals’ leathers.

Early casualty was Crutchlow who was called to serve a ride through penalty due to jumping the start. Dorna and the FIM had installed new jumpstart cameras and caught the Englishman moving forward by just 0.0001s before the red lights went out. He would eventually finish 13th.

Soon, Petrucci was dropped by the group. Rossi, Dovizioso, Miller and Morbidelli were caught in an exciting high-speed duel. Rossi and Dovi managed to pull clear at the end, leaving the men behind to chop and block each other.

Rossi and Dovi exchanged position a number of times, but the Ducati rider couldn’t pull away as he was trying to conserve his worn tyres. Rossi then put a block pass on Dovizioso at Turn 7 on the last lap and took off to take second place.

The podium finish celebrated Rossi’s 23 years of his involvement in GP racing.

By now, Alex Rins (Suzuki Ecstar) rode a steady race from 16th on the grid to join the group. In the battle than ensued between Miller, Vinalez and Morbidelli, the trip went three wide as they headed into Turn 7. Miller was on the inside, Morbidelli on the outside, sandwiching Vinalez. Miller managed to slip through, followed by Vinalez and Morbidelli. Miller’s block pass means Vinalez had to hold his throttle, causing Morbidelli to smash into Vinalez’s back wheel. Both riders were knocked out of the race with just a few corners to go.

Alex Rins slipped through to claim 5thwith Petrucci behind him.

Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda) finished 7th to cap off a strong weekend; Fabio Quartaro (Petronas Yamaha Sepang Racing Team) impressed in 8th; Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) took 9th; and Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory) rounded out the Top 10.

Further down the field, rookie Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) put in another impressive race to come home in 11th; Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda) had a horrid start and finished 12th; Crutchlow in 13th; Francesco Bagnaia (Pramac Ducati) in 14th; Johann Zarco (Red Bull KTM Factory) couldn’t capitalize on his soft tyres and dropped all the way back to 15th; Hafizh Syahrin (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) in 16th; and Andrea Ianone (Aprilia Racing) took the last spot.

Whatever it is, the factory Yamaha team is looking forward to leaping back into contention after a dismal 2018 season. The longest losing streak in the brand’s history was thankfully broken when Vinalez won at Phillip Island.

The dearth of meaningful results even prompted Yamaha’s Project Leader Koiji Tsuya to issue a public apology to the riders, team and fans. He then stepped down last month and replaced by former head of chassis division Takahiro Sumi.

Riders Rossi and Vinalez will finally get to test the new bike during the first Pre-Season Test at the Sepang International Circuit from 6thto 8thFebruary.
