  • All competitors’ helmets need to conform to a single FIM standard.

  • The certified helmets will receive a label with hologram and QR label.

  • The regulatory body hopes such helmets will be available to the public to improve safety.

All helmets in MotoGP, Moto3, Moto2  must conform to a new FIM standard.

Although there is still contention to whether this ruling is beneficial, there may be a positive aspect to it. Current helmet manufacturers may seek a certain safety certification, although most, if not all, conform to the ECE 22.06 standard. However, a manufacturer may produce helmets to conform primarily to other standards. Current helmet certification are standards JIS (Japan), Snell Foundation, DOT (American) and so forth.

For example, AGV and HJC (among others) conform primarily to the ECE 22.06 standard. Arai helmets need to pass the tougher Snell Foundation tests, on the other hand.

Each standard has different testing methods to qualify for certification.

With the new FIM mandate in place, helmets from AGV, Arai, Bell, HJC, Scorpion, Shark, Shoei, Suomy, X-Lite, et al need to conform to a single standard.

The FIM has not provided the parametres of their tests, however. But we can expect the helmets will be tested for a variety of criteria such as impacts at low, medium and high speeds as well as penetration.

An FIM-certified helmet will receive a hologram label with QR code. The QR code allows race officials to scan, identify and track each helmet used in competition.

The FIM hopes that such measures will result in truly race-tested helmets making their way to consumers.

  • Romano Fenati akan bertanding pada tahun 2019 dalam kategori Moto3.
  • Pasukannya sebelum ini, Marinelli Snipers Team telah menandatangani kontrak bersamanya semula.

  • Romano Fenati will compete in 2019 in the Moto3 category.

  • His ex-team, Marinelli Snipers Team has recontracted him.

  • Fenati created a firestorm when he grabbed the front brake lever of another competitor in the 2018 San Marino GP.

Romano Fenati will return to the Moto3 championship in 2019.

Fenati gained infamy when he grabbed Stefano Manzi’s front brake lever at the San Marino GP in September this year. In the firestorm that followed, Dorna slapped a Fenati with a two-race ban. The FIM banned Fenati for the rest of the season, on the other hand. His Marinelli Snipers Moto2 gave him the marching orders.

If that wasn’t enough, the Forward Racing Team which is slated to campaign with MV Agusta in Moto2 in the 2019 season also dropped him. Soon, MV Agusta’s Boss, Giovanni Castiglioni tweeted that he will not allow Fenati to ride his bikes.

Moto2: MV Agusta Cancels 2019 Moto2 Contract with Romano Fenati

Ironically, Stefano Manzi is the current and future rider in the Forward Racing Team. He would’ve been Fenati’s teammate next year. It was later established that Manzi had provoked Fenati. Was Manzi playing mind games to establish the pecking order?

Anyway, Fenati announced that he’d leave racing and concentrate on continuing his studies.

But MotoGP.com has just dropped a bombshell by announcing that Fenati’s Marinelli Snipers team has re-employed him for the 2019 Moto3 season. The team has just signed on Tony Arbalino, thus Fenati will be his teammate.

Marinelli Snipers has good reasons to re-sign Fenati as the fiery Italian took 23 podium finishes with 10 wins in the starter class. He finished second overall in 2017, after all.

The team and Fenati have not made official announcements, but we expect that to happen at the final round at Valencia this weekend.

On a personal note, we hope that Romano Fenati puts his raw talent to greater use and keep his temper in check. This must be the very last chance he’d ever get.

  • The San Marino GP Moto3 race was another dramatic affair.

  • Lorenzo Della Porta wins after a thrilling five-way battle.

  • Marco Bezzecchi crashed out to hand the championship lead back to Jorge Martin.

Moto3 racing never fails to provide the best racing and it did not disappoint at San Marino, ultimately seeing Lorenzo Della Porta winning his maiden category victory.

The drama started when five riders came together in a horrific crash at the end of the very first lap which claimed Nicolo Bulega, Aaron Canet, Auyumu Sasaki, Jaume Masia and Enea Bastianini. Canet and Sasaki were sent to the mobile medical centre for check-ups, but thankfully all riders were okay.

The pile up also allowed the front five consisting of championship contenders Marco Bezzecchi, Jorge Martin besides Lorenzo Della Porta, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Gabriel Rodrigo to break away.

The five battled incessantly throughout the race with multiple lead changes which became fiercer and fiercer as the laps wound down. All riders were involved in one aggressive pass after another; all the while Bezzecchi and Martin were trying to contend with each other for the championship.

But everything changed when Bezzecchi’s rear tyre broke loose and the bike almost highsided him into the gravel trap with just two corners to go to start the last lap. It was the Italian rider’s third crash while leading the last lap this season, the other two being at Le Mans, France and Assen, The Netherlands. His crash had effectively handed the championship lead over to Jorge Martin.

However, it was not the end of drama. Fabio Di Giannantonio had overshot a corner with two laps to go and was relegated to the back of the group. He ended up riding like a man possessed to catch the group. As Della Porta led the last lap into the last turn, Di Giannantionio lunged up the inside. But it appeared that the former kept his throttle pinned through the corner. While this was happening, Martin snuck through on the left side of both riders. It was a three-way charge to the line!

The results took a while to appear. When it did, it was Della Porta who crossed the line in 1st, by just 0.058s from Martin. Di Giannantionio lost out after his audacious move as he had to hold back on his throttle lest he ran wide and finished 3rd.

Malaysian rider Adam Norrodin finished in 12th.

Jorge Martin now leads the championship with 166 points from Marco Bezzecchi with 158 and Fabio Di Giannantonio with 138 points each.

  • Ex-British Talent Cup rider, John McPhee is rumoured to be riding for the SIC Moto3 team next year.

  • McPhee made a huge impression in his debut season.

  • It all depends on whether Ayumu Sasaki or Adam Norrodin heads up to SIC’s Moto2 team.

There has been much talk about John McPhee joining the SIC (Sepang International Circuit) Moto 3 Racing Team for the 2019 season, despite the Scotsman remaining tight-lipped about his future.

“It certainly looks like I’ll be continuing in Moto3, although it was nice that there were a couple of Moto2 offers there,” he told Crash.net, “Hopefully I should know for sure in the next couple of weeks, which team it’ll be and which bike I’ll be on.”

The Scotsman made a great impression in his first Moto3 season last year by regularly challenging for the lead and running in the top 10. He went on to win his first race at the 2017 Czech Republic Grand Prix, in addition to a total of five career podium finishes including at the Sachsenring recently.

He eventually finished seventh overall in his first season with the Dorna-funded British Talent Cup team, and was then moved to the CIP Green Powerteam for the 2018 season. He was without a ride at the beginning of the 2018 season after the project ended.

The SIC Moto3 seats are currently occupied by Asia Talent Cup Champion Ayumu Sasaki and our local boy, Adam Norrodin. Needless to say, both riders would want to move up to SIC’s Moto2 team, which has Niki Tuuli as the sole rider. SIC could very well expand the team to two bikes and riders for 2019.

Besides that, SIC will also run a MotoGP team from next year. The rider line-up has to be announced, they are set to do officially do so later at the Silverstone round.
