  • Triumph has handed over the Moto2 engines to their technical partner over the Aragon GP weekend.

  • Technical partner ExternPro will build and maintain the engines throughout the season.

  • The handover signals the end of development and the beginning of a new Moto2 era.

Triumph has officially handed over the first batch of engines that power the Moto2 field in the 2019 season. The engines were presented to Triumph’s technical partner ExternPro who will build and maintain them. The ceremony was carried out at ExternPro’s base at Motorland Aragon ahead of the weekend’s races.

The handover signifies the end of the engine’s development for the 2019 season. The engines will be assembled by ExternPro and installed into the individual chassis makes in Moto2, namely Kalex, Speed Up, Tech 3, NTS and KTM.

While it is the end of the race engine development, it is the beginning of a new era for the Triumph 765cc Triple in the intermediate class and re-entry of the Hinckley-based marque into motorsports, albeit as an engine supplier.

The new engines will be ridden in anger the first time during the Moto2 Winter Test from 23rd to 25th November 2018 at Jerez, Spain.

Triumph’s Chief Product Officer, Steve Sargent said, “The excitement and positive response already seen from our customers, the army of Triumph fans worldwide and in the Moto2 paddock has shown us how powerful this partnership will be for Triumph.”

“For me this is just the beginning as we will continue to support the engine programme and feed the key learnings into our motorcycle development, particularly in our class-leading Street and Speed Triples.”

As we reported earlier, the Triumph 765cc inline-Triple Moto2 engine carries over many stock parts from the Street Triple including the pistons, cams, crankshaft and conrods. The engine will then be hooked up to a Dorna-issued Magneti Marelli standard ECU which features traction control, launch control and quickshifter with autoblipper for the first time in Moto2.

  • MV Agusta Reparto Corse’s Moto2 project has confirmed Romano Fenati as one of their riders for the 2019 season.

  • Fenati had done well in Moto3 in 2017 but currently struggling in Moto2.

  • As with the 2019 Moto2 regulations, MV Agusta will build the bike around the new Triumph engine.

We reported earlier that the famed Italian marque, MV Agusta will be joining the Moto2 grid from 2019, but the manufacturer did not announce the rider at the time. MV Agusta had finally announced that Romano Fenati will pilot the bike alongside a stablemate.

MV Agusta returns to MotoGP

Do note that all Moto2 bikes will use the new Triumph 765cc Triple engine next year, despite the bike is branded as MV Agusta. Triumph supplies the engine while builders such as Kalex, Speed Up, KTM and MV Agusta complete the rest of the bike.

The signing of Fenati is seen as something of great interest among fans. He was unceremoniously sacked from Valentino Rossi-backed Sky VR46 team in 2016 after being abusive to members of the team. Since then he had to carry the reputation of being hard to work with.

Marinelli Honda contracted him for the 2017 Moto3 season where he finished 2nd overall. Fenati made the jump to the Moto2 class for 2018 but he has been experiencing a horrid season and is currently in 19th position with just 14 points.

While MV Agusta has stated that their Moto2 involvement is for the long-term, signing Fenati on as rider could be a risk to them. But Fenati does have real talent and speed.

“I am very happy and honoured to take part in this prestigious project and to join such a cohesive and competent group as the Forward Racing Team is,” the fiery Italian said. “Driving the F2 will be a source of great pride for me and will be an important responsibility, so I will give all my contribution and my experience to achieve excellent results.”

  • Triumph Motorcycles have completed the final revision of their Moto2 engine and will showcase it during the British GP.

  • The 765cc-triple engines will be supplied to Moto2 teams beginning 2019, replacing the 600cc inline-Four from Honda.

  • Triumph’s engine is expected to produce more midrange and peak horsepower.

Triumph Motorcycles will hold a parade lap during the British GP at Silverstone this weekend on a bike powered by their Moto2 engine. The event commemorates the completion of the Triumph engine which will be supplied to teams in the intermediate class beginning 2019.

The rider picked to ride the bike is two-time World Superbike Champion, James Toseland. He will ride the bike specially painted bike in the Union Jack theme.

The new engine has been warmly welcomed by Moto2 riders who have tested it as it has plenty of midrange grunt compared to the outgoing 600cc Honda inline-Four. It is also reputed to feature a quickshifter for both up- and downshifts, with an autoblipper. Additionally, an advanced Magneti Marelli ECU will be employed which bumped up the power output more than the current Moto2 engine, besides including traction control for the first time.

But do note that although it’s based on the Street Triple RS’s 765cc triple, only the engine will be supplied to Moto2 teams next year, instead of the entire bike which will perform the parade lap. This is because Triumph will not field their own Moto2 team. As per Moto2’s regulations, Triumph supplies the engines while teams such as Kalex, Speed Up, KTM, et al will produce their own frames to house the powerplant.

Triumph Motorcycles have also organized other activities such as a factory visit in Hinckley by Moto2 riders including Same Lowes, Danny Kent and Luca Marini, in addition to Moto3 rider John McPhee.

We hope this parade lap will be telecast “live” in Malaysia this weekend!
