A Mat Rempit killed another motorcyclist and injured another during an illegal race in Kota Bahru, Kelantan on Saturday (18th August 2018).

As shown the video, a large crowd had gathered to spectate an illegal race. Two bikes blew by followed by a third a few seconds afterwards.  The third bike then struck a pedestrian who had stepped onto the “track”.

The motorcyclist, Norazrin Azizan Abdul Aziz, 26, died while receiving emergency treatment at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian. The pedestrian, Mohd. Azhan Baharudin, 25, had both his legs broken and is now lying unconscious at the same hospital.

The Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) are now hunting for the other two illegal racers. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (Jabatan Siasatan dan Penguatkuasaan Trafik) Director, Datuk Sharul Othman Mansor said that the two were complicit in causing the death of Norazrin and bodily harm to Mohd. Azhan.

He continued, “The two motorcyclists are wanted for investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.”

Datuk Sharul made the announcement at a media conference codenamed as “Operasi Samseng Jalan (Operation Road Hooligans)” which he headed at Seremban last night.

Biker owners with loud exhaust might get an RM100,000 fine or five years’ jail time if found guilty under the Environmental Act.

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) plans to closely with Natural Resources and Environment Ministry as one way to deal with ‘mat rempit’.

Any modified exhaust exceeding the 75db (decibels) limit is considered as ‘noise pollution’.

In the latest report published by NST Online, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is looking into other aspects of the nation’s laws in order to curb the activities of ‘mat rempit’ or street hooligans in Malaysia. One of the ways that they’re planning to do so is by connecting the relations of loud modified exhausts and the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry. (more…)

A recently uploaded YouTube video showed a group of US ‘mat rempit’ trying to escape from the police.

Street riders from the US are popular with doing insane stunts of public roads with their dirt bikes and ATVs.

Everything was caught on camera from one of the riders’ action camera mounted on his/her helmet.

In every country, there’s always a group of motorcycle riding hooligans that enjoy the chaos of riding wildly on city streets. Here in Malaysia, we have ‘mat rempit’ but in the United States of America, they take things to whole new level (including the police who try to apprehend them). (more…)

In the thick of the recent MotoGP action at the Sepang International Circuit, Modenas Malaysia stole part of the show with the launch of Bakat Besi, Malaysia’s first talent search programme for Design and Bike Engineering. The programme aims to offer builders, mechanics, students and motorcycle enthusiasts a chance to make a career out of passion through Bakat Besi: Peraduan Reka Bina, the first installment of the talent search programme that will seek many different skill sets with the first being design and build.

There is undeniably no shortage of talent in Malaysia, with talents sitting idle and waiting for an opportunity to shine, but with no real chance to do so on a national or international platform, these talents remain hidden all around the country; their talents wasted.

“With Bakat Besi: Peraduan Reka Bina platform, potential talents can unleash their engineering and design creativity, while making an income for themselves and their families, and also providing a continuity to the local motorcycle industry,” said Wazi Hamid, veteran motorcycle Cub Prix champion and pioneer in the motorcycle industry in Malaysia.

“Bakat Besi: Peraduan Reka Bina is probably the best motorcycle contest that gives talented Malaysians a chance to make a career out of their talents. As far as the industry goes, we have seen how talents are misplaced through illegal racing and criminal activities and there isn’t a proper platform that enables these young talents to explore the possibilities of professional career,” said Keshy Dhillon, Managing Editor of Moto Malaya & Bikes Republic who was present as the KOL for the programme.

While there are no statistics reported on the illegal street racing, the New Straits Times have reported that about 2,837 illegal racers arrested from 2003 to 2007. That does not include the unreported cases, hence, the numbers are expected to be higher. It was reported two years ago that in a bid to curb illegal motorcycle races, the government is set to allow Mat Rempits the chance to race on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, in legal fashion. Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor states that the idea behind these organised races is to counter the growing problem of illegal motorcycle racing.

“We want the motorcycle community to not merely be social catalysts but also contribute to the economic engine as opportunities in industry grows. Done systematically this will provide new enterprise that the youths will be attracted to, reducing social ills and unemployment, taking away street racers, putting them in R&D, manufacturing and marketing. Bakat Besi is the kick starter to achieve that,” added Amirudin Abd Kadir, Chief Executive Officer of Modenas Malaysia (above) during the launch.

Bakat Besi: Peraduan Reka Bina contest is set to establish a platform for talents to uncover, develop and refine their design and bike engineering skills and help them set foot in the growing automotive industry in Malaysia.

The contest will be divided into two categories, the first one being ‘Bina Sifu’, grouping together 12 top builders in Malaysia to customise and modify motorcycles provided by the main sponsor of Bakat Besi: Peraduan Reka Bina – Modenas, who are sponsoring their latest series of street bikes, the V15, Pulsar RS200 and NS200.

The 12 builders will be divided into six teams, and each team will have one constructor and one customiser. Each team will be allocated a budget of RM10,000 and their entry will be judged on the aesthetic, performance and commercial value of the motorcycle. The winner will receive a cash prize, a new Modenas motorcycle, and a production contract.

The second category is called the ‘Reka Sifu’ which is a design contest where contestants will need to submit a concept design of a Modenas motorcycle or design stickers (livery). All contestants will be judged by a panel of judges and by the public digitally via social media platform.

The contest will be filmed, giving the public exclusive view of how the builders design and build the street bikes, offering an unprecedented point of view to this unique contest. The nine-episode series will be aired on Modenas’ official YouTube channel. The judging panel for the contest is sixty percent of the total scoring. With that, the public will be able to vote for their favourite customised bike by design and performance and stand a chance to win a Modenas motorcycle in the process.

  • Police to nab illegal racers after identifying the ‘rat holes’ they use to avoid being caught.
  • Highway authorities to fix fences to stop motorcyclists from escaping.

According to a report by The Star Metro, the Selangor police have upped their focus on nabbing Mat Rempit’s (Malaysian for street racers). And they plan to begin doing so by locating all narrow roads used by these racers as escape routes from housing areas to highways and vice versa.

These escape routes, dubbed by the Selangor traffic chief Supt Kamaludin Mohamad, as ‘rat holes’ are used by the racers to quickly evade police roadblocks around housing areas and on major highways.

To avoid getting caught, these illegal racers will break certain sections of fences along the highways.

According to the report published online, the traffic chief was quoted as saying, “We have informed the highway concessionaires – Besraya and Kesas – to repair damaged fences along the highway.”

The chief was also quoted saying that the police are planning to use a new technology to catch the culprits during the next raid, but the report made no mention of what the new technology is.

He did however remind the public that Selangor has an ongoing campaign called Ops Zero Tolerance in all 15 districts in Selangor, and which started on October 14 last year.

Both the police and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) are working together to curb illegal activities through regular raids and joints roadblocks, the latter can usually be seen operating at the entrance to major highways like the NKVE.

The chief also added that from October 14 last year to February 6 this year the police has issued summonses to 171,619 motorcycles. This consists of 54,507 summons to riders without a valid license, 10,751 for not having a road tax, 7,688 for not wearing a helmet, and 98,673 for causing obstruction.

Selangor JPJ director Nazli Md Taib said that in its three operations in the past two weeks, 1,900 motorcycles were checked and 553 of them were summoned.

Bikes Republic welcomes this move by the authorities as there are just too many motorcyclists with no regard for the law. It was just last week that a father and what we assume to be his daughter was seen riding on the NKVE without a helmet. We have reached a dangerous level of ignorance and it is good that the authorities are stepping up their game.
