Special operation held by Johor state police sees 2,350 ‘Mat Rempit’ riders hit with summonses, 42 individuals detained, and 208 vehicles confiscated.

Local daily Harian Metro reports that a total of 2,350 summonses were issued for various traffic offenses during a special operation held by Johor state police targeting road bullies and street gangs, namely ‘Mat Rempit’ riders in particular.

Said operation, which ran from April 9 until yesterday, saw Johor state police detain a total of 42 individuals, aged between 14 to 53 years old, for various offences under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“In the special operation, 12,815 individuals and 10,035 vehicles were inspected with 3,723 of them being motorcycles,” said Superintendent M Kumarasan, Head of the Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department (JSPT).

“208 vehicles were confiscated according to Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for investigation and further action. This special operation was held to address the issue Mat Rempit,” he added in a statement here today.

Kumarasan further noted that these Mat Rempit groups proudly partake in reckless and illegal acts such as street racing, as well as performing dangerouns stunts such as ‘wheelies’ and ‘superman’, clearly endanger themselves and other motorists all in the name of chasing social media clout.

“This culture has become a trend among them, and they seem unfazed despite having been involved in accidents several times and receive punishment by authorities for the same offences.”

“Apart from the district level, this operation was also carried out on the highway with the Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigations department especially targeting motorcycle groups riding in convoys and performing dangerous acts such as those that are always spreading on social media which clearly endanger themselves and other road users,” Kumarasan added.
