BMW’s R18 cruiser moved the Bavarian brand beyond its usual line-up of adventure and sports bikes, and it was arguably well received. And if new reports are to be believed, BMW is once again set to expand its model line-up with the inevitable introduction of new R12 models

In May, BMW provided a sneak peek of the R12 nine T, which will be the successor to the decade-old R nine T and its various iterations. Furthermore, a second variant, simply named R12, has been unveiled through Type-Approval documents, indicating compliance with UN-ECE standards, allowing its sale in Europe and the UK.

The R12 is set to embrace a more cruiser-style design, positioning itself just below the R18 in BMW’s lineup, and offering competition for motorcycles like Harley-Davidson’s Nightster. This expectation is reinforced by statements made by BMW’s former head of design, Edgar Heinrich, who, when asked by a European journalist about the potential for more R12 models, cryptically replied, “I’m not allowed to talk about future bikes, but maybe that’s a good idea.” This response is widely interpreted as a confirmation of future R12 variants.

The recently released documents also reveal the first official specifications for the R12 nine T. Notably, it will offer three different power outputs to accommodate European regulations and adhere to A2 bike requirements in the UK.

BMW R18 Malaysia

Both the R12 and R12 nine T will share key components, including the engine and frame. Under the hood, you’ll find BMW’s 1170cc air-cooled boxer twin engine, capable of delivering a maximum of 107.3bhp in the top-tier R12 nine T model. This power is achieved at 7000rpm, 250rpm lower than the current R nine T’s peak, and is coupled with a maximum torque of 115Nm at 6500rpm. A second variation of the R12 nine T will offer a 94bhp & 109Nm engine to meet license requirements, and a restricted 47bhp version has also received Type-Approval.

Conversely, the cruiser-style R12 is exclusively available with the 94bhp and 47bhp engine options. These documents hint at an impressive top speed for the full-power R12 nine T, estimated at 134mph.

Both the R12 and R12 nine T share a 1520mm wheelbase, indicating their shared chassis and engine. However, the R12 is longer at 2200mm compared to the R12 nine T’s 2130mm. This is partly due to a larger 19-inch front wheel on the R12, complemented by a smaller 16-inch rear wheel, which contributes to its cruiser-style stance. In contrast, the R12 nine T boasts a sportier appearance with 17-inch wheels at both ends.

The R12’s wheels are also narrower than the R12 nine T’s, featuring a 100/90×19 front and 150/80×16 rear tire, as opposed to the R12 nine T’s 120/70×17 front and 180/55×17 rear tires.

Additional differences in dimensions reveal that the R12 is 40mm narrower across the handlebars but has handlebars that are 40mm taller compared to the R12 nine T. Both models will offer the option of front cowls.

In terms of weight, the R12 nine T is the lighter of the two, tipping the scales at 222kg with a full tank of fuel, while the R12 cruiser is slightly heavier at 229kg in the same state. BMW enthusiasts can anticipate more R12 variants in the future, including replacements for the R nine T Scrambler and R nine T Urban G/S, as well as a touring cruiser model equipped with panniers.

In 2024, the Shoei Helmets lineup, including the much-loved Marc Marquez collection, is growing with the introduction of the Glamster. The Shoei Glamster, while not a new model on its own, has been a familiar sight on European roads for nearly a decade. Characterized by its iconic rounded shell shape, a generous visor, and the timeless retro Shoei logo, the Glamster serves as a nod to the earliest days of full-face motorcycle helmets.

Marc Marquez has an affection for retroy styling and this has been evident throughout his racing career. This affection often finds expression in the unique, one-of-a-kind helmet designs he showcases at the MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin, Texas, influenced by his passion for flat track racing.

The latest addition to the Shoei Helmets lineup, the Shoei Glamster MM93 edition, continues to reflect Marquez’s fondness for vintage aesthetics. This helmet features a dark color scheme, dominated by black and grey on the shell, accented with striking red stripes and details that distinctly identify it as part of Shoei’s MM93 collection. Marquez’s iconic number, 93, is elegantly displayed in a retro-style font against a light-grey background on both sides of the helmet.

It’s crucial to note that the MM93 edition of the Glamster maintains the same technical specifications as the original Glamster. This includes ECE 22.06 certification for optimal safety, the utilization of Shoei Drylens and Pinlock Evo Lens on the visor to prevent fogging, and strategically placed minimalist air intakes on the chin area and the top front part of the shell for enhanced airflow. The helmet also features a removable interior lining for effortless cleaning and an EQRS (Emergency Quick Release System) for swift helmet removal in emergency situations.

Presently, the Shoei Glamster MM93 has been announced exclusively in Japan, where it is priced at ¥56,000 (approximately £310, excluding tax). It’s available in sizes ranging from S to XXL. To celebrate the arrival of this cutting-edge helmet, SHOEI Malaysia hosted an exclusive preview event for the first 100 X-Fifteen owners. These lucky individuals were given the unique opportunity to choose their preferred helmet graphics and finalize the sizing through the X-Fifteen Personal Fitting System (PFS) session. As an extra special touch, every X-Fifteen owner received an exclusive limited-edition gift set.

One of the standout features of the X-Fifteen is its aerodynamic prowess, fine-tuned in SHOEI’s state-of-the-art wind tunnel facility. The helmet’s design prioritizes high-speed stability, resulting in a remarkable 6.1% drag reduction and a 1.6% decrease in lift compared to its predecessor. This engineering marvel is capable of delivering peak performance at speeds of up to 350 km/h.

The X-Fifteen boasts a Multi-Ply Advanced Integrated Matrix Plus (AIM+) Shell, constructed from a six-ply matrix of lightweight fiberglass and high-performance fibers. Ventilation and airflow in the X-Fifteen have been optimized with seven closable air inlets and six air outlets, allowing hot air to escape efficiently. Additionally, the EPS tunnels have been deepened from 6mm to 10mm, significantly increasing cold air volume and expediting hot air evacuation, ensuring a constant flow of refreshing air for the rider. The innovative cheek pad cooling system now incorporates more air holes to provide additional comfort.

In terms of comfort, the X-Fifteen introduces pocket-shaped pads with removable layers for a precision fit. Its patented angle adjustment mechanism can change the helmet’s position by up to 4 degrees, enhancing the rider’s upper field of vision, especially when tucked into extreme racing positions.

Functionality is taken to the next level with a double-layer lens lock design, ensuring stability during high-speed riding. The two-stage shield locking system, comprising a racing shield lock and a center locking mechanism, offers the best protection against unexpected shield releases during a fall. Furthermore, a newly developed trigger lock mechanism prevents the shield from detaching after an accident, instilling even greater rider confidence.

Most importantly, the X-Fifteen complies with the latest ECE22.06 and FIM homologation safety standards. It features a CWR-F2R shield/visor that combats fogging in various weather conditions, providing riders with a consistently clear vision. This shield, in combination with the latest window beading, effectively prevents wind and water from entering when secured. To suit individual tastes, the helmet is available in a wide range of colors and graphics, and it offers sizes ranging from XS to XXL, ensuring a perfect fit for every rider.

Harley-Davidson revealed a decline in retail motorcycle sales for all its models, excluding LiveWire, across various global regions during the third quarter of 2023. Overall, worldwide sales fell by 16 percent year-on-year. A regional breakdown of sales reveals the following:

  1. North America: Sales for Q3 2023 experienced a 15 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2022.
  2. Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA): Sales in this combined region dropped by 13 percent.

  4. Latin America: Sales in Latin America also declined by 11 percent in Q3 of 2023.

Regarding LiveWire, it is important to note that Harley-Davidson employs a unique reporting approach for LiveWire numbers. While the statistics for the internal combustion engine (ICE) Harley-Davidson Motor Company pertain directly to motorcycle sales in each region and globally, LiveWire figures use a different terminology – “Electric Motorcycle Shipments” rather than “sales”.

In Q3 of 2023, the company reported the shipment of a total of 50 LiveWire electric motorcycles. This represents a substantial 76 percent decrease in comparison to the LiveWire shipments in Q3 2022, which amounted to 206 units a year prior. In fairness, it is worth acknowledging that LiveWire is still in its early stages, and innovative technologies and ventures often face initial challenges. Additionally, Harley-Davidson has only recently introduced its electric motorcycles to the European market. While riders in Europe and Asia have been quicker to embrace electric motorbikes in general, the same cannot be said for the U.S. market. As LiveWire establishes its presence in Europe and explores markets beyond the United States, particularly with offerings like the S2 Del Mar, it may find a more receptive audience and pave the way for future growth.

Bosch is set to revolutionise motorcycle safety with the introduction of a new generation of motorcycle rader, which some press are calling the most important update in a while.

In a press release, Bosch says its new-generation radar could prevent up to “one in seven motorcycle accidents,” by integrating the radar with emergency electronic assists. Essentially, the radar would be used to detect proximity to hazards and intervene on behalf of the human rider to try to avoid a collision. This is different to the radar-linked Unified Braking System on the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ because the Yamaha system only applies the rear brake in the event of high pressure applied to the front brake by the rider.

Bosch is set to present a new, longer-range radar at the upcoming EICMA show, with a range increase of 50 metres over its previous version to have a maximum distance of 210 metres. Additionally, it will have a 15-degree horizontal aperture, which “improves its accuracy in object detection,” the German firm says.

This kind of emergency radar system used in the context of autonomously operated braking is not a new thing, generally speaking, even if it is such in motorcycles. In the four-wheeled world, it’s an increasingly common feature on cars.

Bosch is also set to unveil a new version of its Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC). The existing iteration of Bosch’s MSC “could prevent or mitigate five per cent of all motorcycle accidents involving personal injury in Germany alone if every motorcycle were equipped with it,” according to the company’s research. The newer version would also be targeted at smaller bikes, after Bosch found that its existing system is used mostly on mid-to-large-sized motorcycles. To make it compatible with smaller bikes, the new MSC will be compatible not only with the 6D IMU, but also the smaller 3D ABS sensor.

In addition, a new-generation rear-wheel hub electric motor will be showcased that saves 2kg and loses no performance compared to the previous iteration, while new engine management systems will help manufacturers meet future regional emissions regulations.
