Yamaha YZF-R3

The 2025 Yamaha YZF-R3 has been launched overseas, following several teases through October.

It is obvious from the pictures that the new bike’s design has been completely overhauled to look even closer to its YZF-R7, R9, and R1 brethren with a strikingly aggressive take.

Gone are the dual headlamps, their positions taken by dual LED DRLs. The headlamp is now a single projection LED er… headlamp placed in the what used to be the faux central air intake. The rest of the bodywork features sharp lines compared to the previous bulbous look. The panel of the rear seat has also been redesigned to more closely resemble that of its bigger siblings, and the taillight of the YZF-R15.

Yamaha says the ergonomics have been revamped for a close to 50/50 weight distribution and that hints at a more aggressive riding posture.

Several new features include a new LCD screen with Yamaha Y-Connect, a USB charging port, assist and slipper clutch.

But that is as far as it goes. The engine remains the same 321cc parallel-twin, the frame is the same, and even the exhaust muffler is unchanged.

The 2025 Yamaha YZF-R3 will surely become the 2025 Yamaha YZF-R25 when it gets to Malaysia.

  • Yamaha has unveiled the 2019 Yamaha YZF-R3.

  • There should be word on the 2019 YZF-R25 for our market soon.

  • The new bike’s styling is directly inspired by the YZF-R1.

The 2019 Yamaha YZF-R3 has been revealed and it looks like the wars in the category are going explode.

However, before we proceed any further, we received word there is a launch of the 2019 Yamaha YZF-R25 happening in Indonesia. But no matter, the R3 and R25 will share the basic bodywork, if not componentry.

It is apparent that the YZF-R3/R25 bears uncanny resemblance to its open-class YZF-R1 brother, apart from the dual LED headlights. The central “air intake” is non-functional. However, the windscreen is now much taller and larger.

From the side, the profile is now more aggressive and looks like a proper big-cc superbike. The tailsection terminates with a sharp edge and will definitely look good with a tail tidy kit.

The forks are now upside-down for better handling (and style). There is no news if other parts of the chassis have been updated likewise.

Moving upwards, the 2019 YZF-R3/R25 will receive a fully TFT display. The data displayed includes gear position. The handlebars remain as clip-ons.

No word yet on when we will receive the bike in Malaysia. Besides that, it will definitely be the 250cc instead of 321cc version. The 321cc engine produces 41 bhp and 29.6 Nm of torque. It will be interesting to see how the 2019 YZF-R25 goes up against the 38 bhp Kawasaki Ninja 250.

  • The Yamaha YZF-R25/R3 has been unchanged since 2015.

  • Pictures have surfaced in Indonesia pertaining to be the “new YZF-R3” for 2019.

  • If Yamaha goes ahead with the plans, expect to see updated components and styling.

The ever-popular Yamaha YZF-R3 (YZF-R25 in Malaysia) has been around for a few years and may well see a facelift for 2019, as photos have surfaced in Indonesia.

If Yamaha does adhere to the design the picture, the new bike’s styling brings it closer to the manufacturer’s other supersport models, namely the YZF-R6 and YZF-R1 besides the YZR-M1 in MotoGP.

Additionally, taking a cue from current industry standards, it may well feature full-LED lighting. Will it also have an updated instrument console? Perhaps. How about an upgraded chassis? Who knows.

But the biggest question would be regarding its displacement, of course.

The 250- to 400cc category is hotly contested, with Yamaha’s rivals Kawasaki now offering both the Ninja 250 and Ninja 400, while KTM has the 390 Duke and RC 390. Even Modenas has the Dominar D400. Hence, there has been much speculation that we may well see a sub-400cc R4 because how else could one compete if the others have higher capacities?

But there’s a problem if it goes 400. While Yamaha offers the R3 or the speculated R4 in other countries, we will be inadvertantly stuck with the 250cc version. This is the same with other manufacturers as well, except for KTM. It’s such a disaster that we won’t get to experience the bikes’ full potential due to riders who are resistant to upgrade their license to “full-B” hence small capacity bikes are stuck at the 250cc ceiling. But the silly thing is that these are the very same cretins who complain about not having bigger capacity bikes in Malaysia compared to our neighbours.

The new R3/R4 should break covers at the AIM Expo in Las Vegas, so stay tuned.
