Yamaha MT-09

Fresh off the debut of the 2024 standard MT-09 on October 31st, Yamaha has now unveiled the MT-09 SP, a higher-performance variant that elevates the bar with enhancements to its suspension, braking system, electronics, and more.

Mere days after the initial unveiling of the standard naked bike, the MT-09 SP takes the foundation of the newly redesigned MT-09 and builds upon it. The MT-09, boasting its fresh bodywork and stylish LED lighting, now combines sportier ergonomics, upgraded braking components, a state-of-the-art TFT display, and advanced control mechanisms.

The core of the new MT-09 SP remains the distinctive ‘CP3’ three-cylinder engine, which received a significant update in 2021, along with the trusty cast aluminum Deltabox frame, first introduced in the same year.

Let’s delve into the specifics of the 2024 MT-09 SP. It takes the base model of the new MT-09 and takes it to new heights. This includes a set of fully adjustable suspension components, top-tier Brembo Stylema brake calipers, a customizable Track riding mode, and a visually striking R1M superbike-inspired color scheme in black, blue, and silver, complete with a brushed aluminum swing arm. The MT-09 SP also introduces a novel feature for Yamaha – a ‘Smart Key’ keyless ignition system.

While some similarities with the standard MT-09 are inevitable due to the 2024 model year updates, there are noteworthy distinctions. The MT-09 SP exhibits a ‘sleeker, more aggressive appearance’ with a redesigned fuel tank, an updated LED front light cluster concealed by a new cover, a fresh rear LED light unit with separate tail and brake lights, and a new two-piece seat that complements the overall design.

The riding position has also seen substantial enhancements, with lower handlebars and higher, rear-set foot pegs, both of which offer adjustable settings. In line with the standard MT-09, the MT-09 SP incorporates a cutting-edge five-inch TFT dashboard and corresponding switchgear, inspired by the latest Tracer 9 GT+ and Niken GT models. Nevertheless, the MT-09 SP brings its distinctive elements to the table.

The MT-09 SP adheres to the SP tradition of premium, fully adjustable suspension, featuring gold-finished, Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coated 41mm KYB front forks, and an Öhlins monoshock in the rear. The new front forks offer comprehensive adjustments for preload, rebound, and compression damping, while the Öhlins rear unit provides customizable settings for compression, rebound, and comes with a remote preload adjuster.

Furthermore, the braking system on the new MT-09 SP has undergone substantial enhancements, making use of twin Brembo monoblock ‘Stylema’ calipers that provide superbike-caliber braking performance for Yamaha’s 900cc roadster.

In contrast to the standard 2024 MT-09, which offers three riding modes (Sport, Street, and Rain), the MT-09 SP introduces an additional Track mode, enabling riders to tailor four extra power, traction, and braking profiles to suit specific track conditions. The SP’s TFT display also incorporates a dedicated Track theme.

One of the standout features of the MT-09 SP is Yamaha’s groundbreaking keyless ‘Smart Key System.’ This innovative system replaces the conventional key slot with an ‘on-off’ switch located at the top of the fuel tank. It activates as long as the Smart Key is within range and provides convenient lock and unlock options for the fuel cap.

The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 SP is available in a striking R1M-inspired color scheme of black, silver, and blue, complete with a brushed aluminum swing arm. As for pricing and availability, Yamaha has yet to unveil these details.

A decade after introducing the original game-changing MT-09 naked motorcycle, Yamaha has unveiled the third-generation model. This iteration presents a fresh face, refined riding ergonomics, and updated electronics while retaining the core elements from the 2021 version, including its iconic 117bhp ‘CP3’ three-cylinder engine and a cast aluminum Deltabox frame.

The 2024 MT-09 boasts a number of updates. Most striking is the revamped bodywork and styling, featuring new LED lights, a sportier riding posture, more agile steering geometry, improved brakes, a modernized dashboard, enhanced switchgear, and the addition of advanced features like cruise control.

This ‘new-look’ MT-09 represents a significant transformation. At the front, the design draws inspiration from Yamaha’s YZ motocross machines. A redesigned fuel tank, a distinctive LED front light cluster comprising a projector headlamp and twin riding lights, and a unique rear LED unit with separate tail and brake lights redefine its appearance. The two-piece seat complements the minimalist bodywork.

Riders will appreciate the lower and two-way adjustable handlebar and a slightly increased steering angle. The new footrests are positioned 30.6mm farther back and 9.5mm higher and offer two adjustment settings. Passenger comfort is improved with redesigned pillion footrests, a revised rear brake pedal, and gear levers, the latter still equipped with a quickshifter.

Practicality is enhanced with a substantial addition—a five-inch TFT display and corresponding switchgear. This technology, derived from the 2023 Tracer 9 GT+ and Niken GT, features four display themes, an intuitive design, built-in connectivity through Yamaha’s MyRide app, and compatibility with Garmin’s StreetCross satnav app system. Besides the standard riding modes, two custom modes allow riders to personalize power, traction, and slide control settings, among others.

Notable new features include cruise control, the Back Slip Regulator, which assists with rear wheel lock during engine braking, a Brembo radial master cylinder for improved front braking, Bridgestone’s latest Battlax Hypersport S23 tires, and an acoustic amplifier grille designed to enhance the exhaust note.

The 2024 MT-09 will be offered in three distinctive colors: Midnight Cyan, Icon Blue, and Tech Black. While it will make its debut at the Motorcycle Live show at the NEC from November 18 to 26, pricing and availability details are yet to be disclosed.

Yamaha has revealed a Cybertronian-ish looking Yamaha MT-09 dubbed the Cyber Rally at the Osaka Motorcycle Show.

This is not the first time the MT-09 gets a unique treatment as Yamaha revealed a special version called the Street Rally back in 2014.

Born from Yamaha’s Y’S Gear aftermarket parts, the Cyber Rally is a continuation of the short-lived Street Rally but with a reworked styling that fits the current generation of MT-09.

Like the Street Rally, the Cyber Rally also gets a clear plastic headlight cowl that completely surrounds the front headlamp and is tall enough to provide protection to the 3.5-inch TFT screen.

The most standout feature on the Cyber Rally is the winglet-like handguards which was the star attraction on the previous Street Rally.

However, while the sharply designed handguards on the Street Rally features clear plastic, the component fitted on the Cyber Rally looks like carbon fibre.

Other key highlights include redesigned radiator covers with added gills, which nicely changes the side profile.

Meanwhile, another noticeable change is the use of aftermarket Akrapovic exhaust.

Regardless, it’s hard to tell whether the Cyber Rally is linked to Yamaha directly, considering it is not an official reveal from the Japanese giant.

Nonetheless, it’s important to note that the MT-09 Cyber Rally looks beastly with the addition of Yamaha’s Y’S Gear.

  • paparan TFT 3.5 inci
  • quickshifter dengan auto-blipper
  • lampu depan LED dengan DRL

After successfully launched the 2021 Yamaha TMax 560, Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) also had a special preview of the new generation MT-09 and the Tracer 9 GT with the official pricing set to be announced in November.

2021 Yamaha MT-09

The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 has finally made its debut in Malaysia and based on the global reveal just a year ago, this by a far is Yamaha’s advanced model to date.

Its firepower has been increased to 117hp and 93Nm of torque thanks to the newer and bigger 890cc inline-three engine. New upgrades to its pistons, conrods, camshafts, and crankcase also mean that this engine is lighter than its smaller predecessor.

In other words, the new 890cc unit is lighter but more powerful, even though it is now Euro5-compliant.

All this power is sent to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual transmission, which is now upgraded with the presence of a slip/assist clutch. All of this is now housed within a new diecast aluminium Deltabox frame matted to a new subframe and swingarm (which are also made out of aluminium).

In total, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 weighs only 189kg (kerb).

Also new to the 2021 model is its braking package which consists of dual 298mm discs up front paired with Nissin callipers and radial master cylinders. The suspension comes in the form of a fully adjustable KYB front fork and a rear shock unit with preload and rebound adjustability.

the biggest upgrade for the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 has to be its electronic riding aids, which is inspired by the brand’s top-of-the-line superbike, the Yamaha YZF-R1. The MT-09 now features a six-axis IMU unit that works together with its lean-angle sensitive traction control, slide control, cornering ABS, and rear-lift mitigation features.

Other features include:

  • 3.5″ TFT display
  • quickshifter
  • auto-blipper
  • projector LED headlight with DRL

2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 & Tracer 9 GT

HLYM also unveiled the latest sport-touring machine, the Tracer 9 and Tracer 9 GT.

Like the new 2021 MT-09, these Tracer 9s feature a new engine, electronics, and exterior design. In other words, it’s a completely new sports-tourer.

Starting with the engine, the 2021 Tracer 9 and 9 GT come with the same 890cc CP3 inline-three engine that was introduced earlier for the new MT-09. Compared to the previous Tracer 900, this new engine features a longer stroke by 3mm, which upgrades its power output from 114hp to 117hp.

This new engine, although bigger in capacity, is actually more compact and lighter than the previous model. Housed within a new CF die-cast aluminium Deltabox chassis, the new Tracer 9 is said to be lighter and more agile than its predecessor. It’s also further refined with a new slipper/assist clutch and longer swingarm.

Also similar to the new MT-09 is the addition of a six-axis IMU plus lean-sensitive rider aids developed from the brand’s top-of-the-range superbike, the R1M. We’re talking three-mode Traction Control System, Slide Control System, Front Wheel Lift, Brake Control, and more.

For the styling department, the Yamaha Tracer 9 is now more aerodynamic which offers one hell of a sexy look plus wind-cutting performance that allows for longer distance riding when paired with its 19-litre fuel tank. Fully fuelled, this baby can travel over 350km without having to stop to refuel.

As a sport-tourer, this bike is expected to be able to carry a lot of cargo. With that being said, it comes with a full three-bag luggage capability. Other features include all-LED lights, twin 3.5-inch TFT screens, lightweight SpinForged wheels, fully-adjustable 41mm USD forks, and an adjustable seat.

If you opt for the 2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, you’ll get all of the above and also:

  • KYB semi-active suspension
  • Hard side cases
  • Up and down Quick Shift System
  • LED cornering lights
  • Dedicated colours and graphics
  • Grip heaters

Akrapovic has put a smile on Yamaha MT-09 owners ever since the motorcycle introduction in 2016.

However, the recent engine upgrades to 890cc compared to the previous 847cc calls for a new product from the Slovenian company.

Introducing the Akrapovic Racing Line full-exhaust system, the latest offering for the all-new 2021 MT-09 that includes:

  • Stainless steel header.
  • Catalytic converter.
  • Pre-muffler.
  • A side-mounted silencer with high-grade titanium outer sleeve.

The company claimed the new exhaust system puts up an additional 2hp and 1.3Nm compared to the stock exhaust, with the notable difference comes at the higher end of the rev range.

For those seeking that extra power, Akrapovic also offers the carbon fibre version, with the company claimed able to gained 4hp and 1.7Nm. However, it is not street legal due to it did not meet the emission standard.

Two months after the official launch of the 2021 Yamaha MT-09, Yamaha released a video on how they painstakingly developed the sound it makes in order to provide an exhilarating ride for future owners. If there’s one thing that we can say about Yamaha is that they pay as much attention to the bike’s overall sound as they do with its outright performance. (more…)

  • paparan TFT 3.5 inci
  • quickshifter dengan auto-blipper
  • lampu depan LED dengan DRL
