KTM 890

Malaysian bikers, rejoice! KTM Motorcycles Malaysia has officially introduced the KTM 890 SMT, widely regarded as one of the naughtiest bikes on the planet.

The SMT continues on the legacy of the 990 SMT from 15 years ago, and is in essence an adventure bike in design but a supermoto at heart. This is the bike for supermoto riders who want to go on an adventure.

Powering the 890 SMT is the same engine as the 890 Duke R – the 899cc LC8c parallel-twin mill engine putting out 105hp at 8000rpm and 100Nm of torque at 6500rpm.

If you’re wondering, the 890 Duke R and 890 Adventure also run on the same engine, though with different state of tune putting out 119hp and 99Nm of torque.

In true supermoto spirit, the 890 SMT is a big, tall bike, with a seat that sits 860mm off the ground, and a ground clearance of 227mm.

Suspension duties are managed by WP Apex suspension all around with 43mm forks providing 180mm of travel with adjustable rebound and compression. The rear monoshock is adjustable for preload and rebound.

KTM says the 890 SMT was developed for sharp handling and this is partially achieved with trick suspension and also a high strength tubular chromoly steel frame with the engine acting as a stressed member to reduce weight and size. The smaller frame also allows for a longer swingarm that is said to improve traction and handling.

As for the subframe, KTM says it is fully loaded to attack the street. The steel trellis subframe was developed to be compact, lightweight and strong enough to carry load.

As for electronics, the new SMT comes with three riding modes – Sport, Rain and Street, a 5-inch TFT display, a standard quickshifter, heated grips and a slipper clutch. Traction Control is managed by a 6D Intertial Measurement Unit. Also standard is Cornering ABS, but being a supermoto at heart, it also has Supermoto ABS that allows the rider to lock the rear wheels when the going gets fun.

Braking duties are managed by J.Juan that grip 17-inch wheels using twin 320mm discs up front with 4-piston radially mounted callipers. At the rear, a 260mm disc is also gripped by a double-piston floating calliper supplied by J.Juan.

The 890 SMT is ultimately built for adventure and as such its 15.8-litre fuel tank offers a range of more than 300km. It is no wonder then that the new SMT is being hailed as the perfect cross between an adventure bike and a street fighter.

The KTM 890 SMT is now in Malaysia for RM101,800.

KTM is back with its iconic Supermoto-tourer, the KTM 890 SMT, and it’s better than ever before.

  • This purposeful model sits between the KTM Adventure and KTM Street product ranges and features several components that elevate its performance.
  • With a re-tuned KTM 890 LC8c platform, the KTM 890 SMT is developed to hit the top of the Supermoto touring segment for power/torque-to-weight ratio.

Former AMA Superbike and Supermoto racer, Chris Fillmore, took the KTM 890 SMT along a Sardinian mountain climb to display its potential and limits. With a super-torquey 889cc LC8c parallel twin engine, the KTM 890 SMT has 105 hp at 8,000 rpm, providing stability and reassurance through corners.

The KTM 890 SMT is just as happy pushed through low revs as it is pinned in higher gears, making it versatile for any rider.

As we mentioned in a previous article, the KTM 890 SMT has a redesigned slim tank which slides the rider even further into the bike with a wide and comfy contact patch.

The bike’s aerodynamic optimized smoked windshield is placed just above the double fender concept with a low splash guard on the fork legs. The CroMo steel frame with tighter geometry provides fierce stability, while the WP APEX suspension, fully adjustable and complemented by 17″ wheels, provides an agile, flighty, and responsive ride.

The motorcycle has several standard ride modes and can be molded further with optional track settings that permit the rider to toggle different amounts of throttle modes and traction control through ten levels.

The Cornering Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) is an important safety feature sensitive to the bike’s pitch and behavior at lean. The bike has a state of the art 5″ TFT dashboard that is scratch and glare resistant, fully customizable, and an easy-to-use infographic menu system for setup preferences.

With potent brakes that employ Cornering ABS and Supermoto ABS, the KTM 890 SMT has an excellent safety profile. The bike can also be customized with heated grips and the chance to add Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) to the software package, ideal for better control in low grip situations and for fast downshifts.

Also, the QUICKSHIFTER+ and Cruise Control are optional and ready to go with a simple activation process, and good connectivity with the bike means full access to navigation possibilities.

KTM has officially confirmed that the brand’s supermoto touring capable motorcycle, the SMT is making a return as the KTM 890 SMT.

  • KTM 890 SMT set to make global debut in April.
  • The 890 SMT will feature the same 890cc parallel-twin engine as the one found in the 890 Adventure.

The Austrian motorcycle company also revealed that the 890 SMT – which was caught undergoing testing in Europe recently – will be officially revealed on 24th April 2023.

Looking at the spy shots published by Cycle World, the soon-to-be-launch 890 SMT sports a slightly slimmer bodywork than its cousin the 890 Adventure.

*KTM 890 Adventure

Unlike the adventure variant, the SMT also features a sportier fuel tank.

In terms of performance, it is likely that the 890 SMT will offer the same power figure as the 890 Adventure. That should mean around 100hp and 95Nm.

That said, the 890 SMT fits right in the likes of Yamaha Tracer 9 GT (117hp) and Ducati Multistrada V2 (113hp).

Despite scrapping its 490cc platform and working on an all-new 990cc and 690cc engine, KTM still has some plans for its 890 range.

  • KTM 890 SMT shares the same 889cc LC8c engine as the 890 Adventure.
  • The 890 SMT is fitted with a taller windscreen and redesigned fuel tank.

That said, the Austrian manufacturer was recently spotted testing the new KTM 890 SMT, as reported by Cycle World.

However, since the 990 platform is considered a replacement for the current 889cc engine, we expect the 890 SMT to have a relatively short lifespan before evolving to a 990 SMT.

Nevertheless, while the upcoming KTM 890 SMT borrows much of its features from the 890 Adventure, the sport tourer version gains a taller windscreen and a higher front mudguard.

Also, the fuel tank on the 890 SMT is now singular and mounted above the engine, unlike the dual, side-mounted tanks featured on the 890 Adventure. The new tank design is likely a better fit for the SMT.

Nonetheless, the exhaust pipes are still the same as the ones found on the 890 Adventure, indicating that the 890 SMT gets the same 889cc LC8c engine tune.

We also expect that the 890 SMT and 890 Adventure shares similar weight.

While KTM is yet to announce plans for the 890 SMT, the bike is clearly in a production-ready stage and could make its way soon.

KTM Malaysia has officially launched the new KTM 890 Duke R and 890 Adventure for the local market.

  • The KTM 890 Duke R and 890 Adventure gets a host of upgrades.
  • Both motorcycle features moden electronic package and the same 890cc parallel-twin engine.

KTM 890 Adventure – RM96,800

The new motorcycle made its global appearance when the world was in the midst of Covid-19 madness back in October 2020.

At the time, KTM unveiled the 890 Adventure and the 890 Adventure R Rally but only the former is available for our market, for now.

Nevertheless, the KTM 890 Adventure runs the 889cc parallel-twin engine which has significant upgrades from the previous 790 generation. They’ve also upgraded other things like traction control, ABS, and electronics to make them more ‘wholesome’ for everyday riding.

They’re also coming in hot with a new set of fully adjustable WP XPLOR 48mm front forks while the rear is handled with the WP XPLOR PDS unit. This combo offers separate compression settings for low and high speeds, so you don’t have to mess with it too much once you get off the highway and onto the dirt.

KTM 890 Duke R – RM75,800

Also joining the Malaysian market is the new KTM 890 Duke R retailed at RM75,800.

As usual, the 890 Duke R offers a weird yet perfect contrast of colours, which only KTM can deliver.

First introduced in 2020, the KTM 890 Duke R continue to be the undisputed champion of the middleweight naked bike category.

Underneath the fancy paint sit s the famous 890cc parallel-twin engine that boasts an impressive 121hp and 99Nm.

The KTM 890 Duke R remains a no-nonsense middleweight naked bike, equally capable of tackling twisty corners on normal roads as it is on the racetrack.

Dubbed The Super Scalpel due to its lightning-fast steering geometry, the KTM 890 Duke R continue to feature a tubular steel chassis and adjustable WP Apex suspension.

Also available on the 890 Duke R is a pair of
Brembo Stylema callipers with 320mm front disc, and adjustable Brembo MCS master cylinder to counteract the enormous power.

The 890 Duke R also features a host of electronics wizardly, which includes:

  • Cornering ABS
  • Cornering MTC (traction control)
  • 6D lean-angle sensor (roll, pitch & yaw)
  • Riding mode (Rain/Street/Sport and Track)
  • 9-levels adjustable traction control slop
  • anti-wheelie
  • throttle control settings
As always, a full range of KTM PowerParts has been developed to allow owners to personalize the 890 Duke R accordingly.

When KTM announced its Midweight NAKED February campaign, we got excited as we were confident the Austrian company was set to kick off 2022 with some exciting news with two new models.

Unfortunately, the first bike was just a 2022 890 Duke R revised with a cooler Atlantic Blue base colour, lifted directly from the 1290 Super Duke R.

The 2022 890 Duke R continues to offer the same engine and same specifications as the previous generation.

We hoped for better news coming from the Mattighofen factory for the second bike, but sadly KTM delivered another blow with the 2022 890 Duke GP.

While it carries the GP badge, the new bike is just a brushed up version of the ‘base’ 890 Duke and is characterized by a single-rider seat (also available on the R) and “new” MotoGP-inspired graphics.

Other “upgrades” include an orange-painted rim and rear subframe.

Like the 2022 890 Duke R, the specifications remain unchanged, as the 889cc twin-cylinder LC8 engine continues to pump 115hp and 92Nm.

The 890 Duke GP also features the same WP Apex suspension, 6-axis inertial platform that controls onboard electronics function, including cornering traction control, cornering ABS, and riding modes.

KTM will soon unveil its third generation of the parallel-twin Adventure model soon after the redesign KTM 890 Adventure recently spotted testing.

First came out as the 790 Adventure in 2019, KTM later spawned the higher-spec 790 Adventure R the following year.

The Austrian firm later replaced the 790 with the up-engined 890 Adventure and 890 Adventure R in 2021, maintaining the same original styling.

However, the 890 Adventure will finally get the design update it deserved for 2023, as confirmed by the latest spy shot photos.

The photos have also confirmed that KTM is adding a road-biased version that will sit alongside the standard 890 Adventure and 890 Adventure R.

While the styling looks similar, the new model has side panels that connect the nose to the distinctive fuel tank with two side-mounted tank sections that go all the way down on the flanks.

On the new 890 Adventure, the bash plate looks more significant with a combination of plastic and alloy that extends around the front to protect the exhaust, while the R variant gets an all aluminium bash plate.

KTM retains the same headlamp design on the 2023 model but with a redesigned windshield that extends to the side and upward.

We assume that the road-biased 890 Adventure will feature a lower windscreen than the standard R model.

The base model also retains the 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel but gains the same high-mounted fender that was previously reserved for the R variant.

According to reports, the road-biased 890 Adventure allows the standard model to gain a more off-road look, previously available only on the R model.

The new variant will also get the same WP Apex suspension treatment as the base model, while the R model has a higher-spec WP Xplor kit.

Nonetheless, all three ranges will continue to use the same LC8 890cc parallel-twin engine instead of the widely rumoured 990cc.

The new engine will likely appear first on a newly designed 990 Duke that is already caught doing some testing in Europe.

KTM wil roll out not one but two 890 Duke range in February which includes the 890 Duke R and 890 Duke GP.

According to reports, the Austrian firm will unveiled the 890 Duke R on February 7th followed by the grand-prix inspired Duke GP on February 22nd.

While we can already picture how the KTM 890 Duke R will turn out, the 890 Duke GP is still a mystery.

However, it is safe to assume the 890 Duke GP to get premium race-spec component, similar to the KTM RC 8C track bike but without the bespoke features.

KTM is calling the two bike launch as “Midweight NAKED February” , meaning the possibility of a full fairing motorcycle is not on the cards, yet we believed the Duke GP will feature some race bike components.

The two models could also offer fresh new colourways, with KTM might go crazy over the GP variant.

KTM decided to surprise everyone by launching the new 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R in the midst of all of this COVID-19 madness. There’s also the Rally Edition, which is a limited-edition run where only 700 units will be produced for global consumption. (more…)
