One of the biggest motorcycle events in Malaysia, the Borneo International H.O.G. Rally Malaysia 2017, or simply BIHRM, will take place from 30th September to 9th of October.

Predictably, the logistics of managing such a large event is arduous at best. So, to help manage some of the functions in executing a successful event are two companies that are synonymous with the Malaysian business landscape – Petronas and Malaysia Airlines.

Petronas as the Official Fuel Partner, and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Cargo, as the Official Logistics Partner for the rally.

The partnership between the Harley-Davidson Owners Group, KL Chapter was officiated today at the Harley-Davidson Showroom in Petaling Jaya.

“BIHRM 2017 started with an idea to ride from the Kota Kinabalu International Bike Week to the Kuching International Bike Week,” said T.J. Roslan, Director of the Harley Owners Group Kuala Lumpur Chapter, Malaysia.

“The idea became into an awesome collaboration with the local H.O.G.® members in Sabah and Sarawak. The result was the making of BIHRM2017.” he added.

The Borneo International H.O.G.® Rally Malaysia (BIHRM) 2017 will be gathering Harley-
Davidson owners and enthusiasts from around the world for an epic 1,450km ride from Kota Kinabalu to Labuan then down to Brunei before Miri, Bintulu, Sibu and ends in Kuching while experiencing the beauty and the culture of Borneo.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Cargo has agreed to be the Official Logistic Partner of the Borneo
International H.O.G.® Rally Malaysia (BIHRM) 2017, providing rapid air freight to transport the motorcycles to Kota Kinabalu for the start of the rally and from Kuching at the end of the rally.

A special promotion video will be recorded in order to show how meticulous transporting a
motorcycle by air can be.

Along the way, the rally will visit several locations where Petronas Dagangan Berhad will hold its ‘Water for Life’ programme to provide local community access to clean water supply and its ‘Streetsmart’ programme to educate the public on basic road safety.

The Borneo International H.O.G.® Rally Malaysia (BIHRM) 2017 aspires to benefit both Harley-Davidson owners as well as the local tourism industries by making BIHRM2017 as a benchmark to inspire more motorcycling events in Borneo in the future.

Our video coverage of the riding clinic and the convoy.

The Harley Owners Group KL Chapter (HOG) recently organised its first ever riding clinic called HORSE, short for Harley Owners Riding and Sharing Experience.

HOG organised HORSE (couldn’t resist that one) to help new and experience owners to learn the basics of Harley ownership and riding the bike to its potential, and of course staying safe.

The clinic was held over two days with day one focusing on theory, and day two on practical with an organised convoy to Lemang To’ki (a popular biker hang out) in Bentong.

The lessons focused on rider preparation which included the basics of selecting a new helmet, wearing full gloves over half gloves. To put it simply, the message from this lesson was to ‘dress for the slide, and not just dress for the ride’, as the safety officer of HOG KL, Jaspal Singh so eloquently put it.

The other lesson focused on bike preparation. All bikes come with a standard setting from the factory, but because all riders have different riding style, it is important to customise the bike accordingly too. This included suspension set up, foot rest position, closing the right seat and others.

The third lesson was on managing the bike and getting the right body position and control set-up. It went along the lines as setting up the brake and clutch lever so that it is positioned in a straight line to the arm and shoulder.

The final chapter focused on bike set up – getting the controls like the foot pegs set up in a right position, selecting the right seat and understanding suspension set-up and static sag.

The first installation of HORSE attracted 20 participants with the instructor was from the HOG committee. Jaspal Singh (below in orange tshirt) serves as the safety officer at HOG and was in charge of lessons while members of HOG contributed to a safe and organised convoy during the second day by leading the bikers and serving as the sweeper.

HOG plans on holding more installations of the HORSE, and will be making an announcement in due time.

Harley-Davidson has just introduced it’s latest addition to the Sportster family, and calls it the Roadster.

Roadster_1

The new Roadster has been stripped down with a minimalist design with only the “essential elements of a pure riding machine,” as Harley so eloquently put it.

Roadster_2

The new Roadster also marks the continuation of a legend that began when the Sportster was first introduced back in 1957. The Sportster is also the longest continuously produced motorcycle in the world, and it is not about to lose steam.

Roadster_3

The new Roadster will join Harley’s Dark Custom line-up with a design inspired by the barebones classic racing motorcycles and the latest trend in simple, basic, ‘naked’ builds.

Roadster_4

The new Roadster may not look very different than older Sportsters, especially the Iron range, but there is a lot that is new; the Roadster gets new exclusive 5-spoke cast aluminium wheels and tyres (the front are 120/70 R19, the rear is 150/70 R18) and are mated to a new rear suspension and a front fork which is now set at a steeper angle. Harley says the 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels together with the revised suspension will deliver better ground clearance. The seat however is still set low at just 785mm.

Roadster_5

The brakes are also new with dual 300mm floating discs up front with ABS-enabled twin-piston callipers, and a 260mm rear disc with a twin-piston caliper. The low-rise handlebar is also new while the mid-mount foot controls are supposed to centre the rider’s weight, while the fuel tank is the same 12.5-litre Sportster fuel tank.

Roadster_6

Visually, keen Harley fans will notice that the rear fender is shorter than before while a drilled and slotted belt guard and exhaust shields seem to mimic the lightening holes in a race bike. Also new is a single four-inch clock up front tucked low in front of the triple clamp. The meter has also been changed from the usual analogue speedo, to a large analogue tacho, and a digital panel for the speedometer and other information.

Roadster_7

The new Harley-Davidson Roadster will be available in the US in June in four colours together with a wide range of custom parts in the official Harley-Davidson catalogue. The bike shown here features a modified bike with blacked-out exhausts, a new seat, rider footrests, transmission and engine cases, blacked-out heads, removable numberplate hanger, new bar grips, mirrors, darkened indicators, a new fuel cap and a performance air filter.
