Adalah menjadi satu kebanggaan bagi setiap pengeluar minyak enjin untuk menyaksikan produk mereka berjaya menyumbang kepada kejayaan di pentas dunia terutamanya dalam saingan MotoGP.

Itulah yang berlaku kepada PETRONAS apabila menyaksikan pelumba PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team, Fabio Quartararo merekodkan tujuh podium, enam petak pertama dan tempat kelima keseluruhan dalam musim pertamanya di kelas premier.



Pelumba muda dari Perancis itu turut menilai prestasinya musim lepas sebagai 8 daripada 10 selepas beberapa kali berjaya memberi cabaran kepada juara dunia, Marc Marquez.

Kejayaan Quartararo merupakan penanda aras baharu bagi PETRONAS selepas berjaya mengintegrasikan produk PETRONAS Sprinta dengan kejuruteraan MotoGP.

Siapa sangka, minyak enjin yang dibangunkan menerusi penggunaan minyak asas yang dihasilkan di Melaka, mampu membantu pasukan PETRONAS Yamaha SRT melakar kejayaan di pentas dunia?

Apatah lagi membantu karier Quartararo yang kini sedang meningkat naik meskipun baru berusia 20 tahun.

Pada masa sama, integrasi ini turut mengukuhkan nama Malaysia di persada dunia sebagai negara pengeluar minyak enjin yang berkualiti tinggi.

Sementara itu, Pengarah Urusan, Bahagian Pengurusan Penjenamaan, Noor Afiza Mohd Yusof menyuarakan rasa bangga terhadap kejayaan yang dilakar PETRONAS Sprinta dalam tempoh singkat.

“PETRONAS sentiasa mencari jalan terbaik agar orang ramai dapat menikmati teknologi dan produk yang dimanfaatkan daripada MotoGP,” jelasnya ketika mengumumkan integrasi di antara PETRONAS Sprinta dan PETRONAS Yamaha SRT.

Menariknya, PETRONAS diberikan tempoh dua tahun untuk membangunkan Sprinta namun telah pun berjaya membantu pasukan PETRONAS Yamaha SRT tahun lalu merekodkan 7 podium yang merupakan penampilan sulung pasukan itu bersama minyak Sprinta baharu!

Tidak hairanlah, peranan PETRONAS Sprinta turut mendapat pujian daripada pengurus pasukan PETRONAS Yamaha SRT Dato Razlan Razali.

“Kejayaan ini membuktikan kemampuan PETRONAS terutamanya daripada aspek teknikal yang ditawarkan mereka,” ujarnya.

PETRONAS melancarkan PETRONAS Sprinta dengan teknologi Ultraflex yang meningkatkan lagi stabiliti minyak enjin sekaligus mengekang tekanan yang diberikan terhadap enjin setiap kali menunggang.

Bagi yang bersikap skeptikal, lahirnya PETRONAS Sprinta dengan bantuan kejuruteraan MotoGP namun hakikatnya, terlakarnya kejayaan PETRONAS Yamaha SRT dengan bantuan minyak enjin PETRONAS Sprinta.

Valentino Rossi akui terbuka dengan cadangan untuk menyertai pasukan satelit, Petronas Yamaha SRT, bagi musim 2021.

Rata-rata berpendapat pasukan Yamaha akan terus memberi kepercayaan terhadap Rossi selagi dia berminat untuk kekal bersama pasukan itu.

Bagaimanapun, dengan Maverick Vinales menampilkan aksi mantap musim lalu sementara pelumba Petronas Yamaha, Fabio Quartararo turut beraksi cemerlang, Yamaha kini berdepan dilema dalam menentukan barisan pelumba bagi 2021.

Menyedari perkara itu, Rossi mengakui dia terbuka dengan idea untuk bertukar tempat dengan Quartararo bagi musim 2021 sekiranya tidak bersara hujung musim 2020.

“Tiada banyak perbezaan jika saya berhijrah ke Petronas.

“Saya lebih gemar untuk kekal tetapi kami kini ada tiga pelumba untuk mengisi dua slot.

“Bagi saya, Petronas merupakan pasukan yang baik tetapi pada masa sama, Vinales mungkin akan berhijrah – ke Ducati – dan Quartararo akan sertai kami, tiada siapa tahu apa yang akan berlaku,” jelas Rossi ketika ditemu bual Gazzetta dello Sport.

Pada masa sama, Rossi mengakui akan berjumpa dengan Lin Jarvis bagi membincangkan masa depannya.

Marc Marquez menoktahkan status selaku juara dunia MotoGP musim 2019 dengan kemenangan di litar Valencia.

Dia turut berjaya mengurniakan kejuaraan dunia pasukan untuk Repsol Honda sekaligus menamatkan kempen terakhir MotoGP 2019 dengan kejuaraan berganda.

Meskipun kejuaraan dunia telah pun disahkan di GP Thailand, Oktober lalu namun senario itu tidak menyekat Marquez untuk memburu kemenangan ke-12 musim ini.

Pada masa sama, kegagalan pelumba Ducati, Danilo Petrucci untuk menamatkan perlumbaan susulan kemalangan dan Andrea Dovizioso sekadar menduduki tempat keempat, membenarkan Marquez menutup defisit dua mata sekaligus menghadiahkan pasukannya kejuaraan dunia.

Sementara itu, pelumba Petronas Yamaha, Fabio Quartararo terpaksa berpuas hati dengan tempat kedua dan Jack Miller ketiga.


Dalam perkembangan sama, Jorge Lorenzo berjaya menamatkan perlumbaan terakhirnya di kedudukan ke-13 selepas mengumumkan persaraan akhir musim ini.

Aksi Moto2 menyaksikan pelumba Red Bull KTM Ajo, Brad Binder muncul juara diikuti Thomas Luthi kedua dan Jorge Navarro ketiga.

Manakala saingan Moto3 menyaksikan pelumba berusia 16 tahun, Sergio Garcia (Estrella Galicia 0.0) menyambar tempat pertama diikuti Andrea Migno (Mugen Race) kedua dan Xaier Artigas (Leopard Impala Junior Team) ketiga.

Rookie sensation Fabio Quartararo of PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team smashed the lap record he set yesterday to secure pole position ahead of tomorrow’s 2019 Shell Malaysia MotoGP.

He had already set a blistering time of 1m 59.027s in FP1 on Friday, which was just 0.004 second slower than the outright lap record set by Dani Pedrosa in 2015. In FP2, he flew to a new record of 1m 58.576s.

But he was determined to put the target out of his rivals’ reach today and set an almost unbelievable 1m 58.303s lap to be fully certain.

The Q2 session was run under overcast skies and cooler conditions. Consequently, virtually all riders improved on their earlier times and the top 15 dipped below the 2m 00.000s mark.

Quartararo’s teammate Franco Morbidelli had been strong through all practice sessions but was overhauled by factory Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP rider Maverick Vinalez. The latter’s time of 1m 58.432s was 0.103 second slower than the pole sitter and merely 0.26 second faster than Morbidelli.

Jack Miller put in another strong qualifying effort, ending up fourth on the grid at 1m 58.725s. LCR Honda rider Cal Crutchlow moved up five spots after finishing FP3 in 10th. Valentino Rossi will start his career 401st race in sixth after posting 1m 59.000s. Alex Rins ended in seventh, while Danilo Petrucci moved up through Q1 to finish eighth.

Johann Marco continues to impress on the other LCR Honda by getting straight into Q2 after F3. A crash on Friday and another one earlier today didn’t deter him to score ninth on the grid.

Rounding out the top ten is Andrea Dovizioso who posted a time of 1m 59.173s.

2019 World Champion Marc Marquez high-sided out of the session at Turn 2 and ended up as being eleventh fastest — his lowest starting position of the season.

Qualifying was incredibly close as the top fifteen qualifiers were covered by less than 1 second.

Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi says that Yamaha will be crazy if they do not hold on to MotoGP rookie sensation Fabio Quartararo from 2021 and beyond.

Speaking to autosport.com, Rossi says that Yamaha will “pull out all the stops” to make that happen. He added that it is very important that the factory retains Quartararo for the long term. It would mean a promotion to the full factory team in 2021, at the expense of either Rossi or Maverick Vinalez.

“I expected that he can be very fast, because he was always very fast from when he was young, but nobody expected like this,” said Rossi.

He added that that the Frenchman did something special and everybody would want him to ride for them.

“At 21 (years old) for sure Yamaha will want want Quartararo, if not it’s crazy.”

Quartararo has been the revelation of the 2019 season. His current form flies in the face of one-time critics who thought that it was a foolhardy for the PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team principal Dato’ Razlan Razali to have picked him over “other better riders.”

The French rider had not achieved much success in Moto2, except for a single win in Catalunya last year. His PETRONAS Yamaha SRT teammate Franco Morbidelli was the 2018 Moto2 champion, finishing way ahead in the championship.

However, he seemed to have found something which clicked in the satellite Yamaha and often finishing ahead of the factory riders. To date, he has scored four pole positions, finished on the podium five times and set two fastest laps.

Pelumba Repsol Honda, Marc Marquez menyifatkan gaya tunggangan Fabio Quartararo bersama Petronas Yamaha mengingatkannya kepada Jorge Lorenzo.

Lorenzo menjadi pesaing Marquez ketika menyertai Yamaha pada 2013 dan berjaya meraih tiga kejuaraan dunia di kelas premier termasuk pada 2015 apabila dia berjaya menewaskan wakil Honda itu.

Seperti Lorenzo, Quartararo turut gemar memasuki selekoh dengan kelajuan tinggi.

Marquez meraih kejuaraan dunia buat kali keenam di kelas premier semalam apabila berjaya mengetepikan cabaran Quartararo di selekoh terakhir dalam perlumbaan ke garisan penamat.

Bagaimanapun, Marquez akui kagum dengan persembahan pelumba berusia 20 tahun itu meskipun ini adalah musim pertamanya di kelas premier.

“Fabio menunggang Yamaha dengan cara yang cukup bagus. Dia mengingatkan saya kepada Jorge Lorenzo ketika bersama Yamaha.

“Hari ini (semalam), dia berlumba dengan baik, dia sangat laju di sepanjang perlumbaan tetapi kami memiliki enjin yang lebih laju tetapi di bahagian selekoh, jentera Quartararo mempunyai cengkaman yang lebih baik.

“Saya yakin dia akan menjadi antara pencabar utama kejuaraan musim depan,” katanya.

We wrote about how the Alpinestars airbag suit saved Andrea Dovizioso and Fabio Quartararo in a horrific crash at the start of the British MotoGP.

Alpinestars published the data recorded by both men’s suits, as well.

But in this video, Dovizioso stands in and shows how it looks like when the suit inflates. As you can see in real motion, the airbags inside the suit expand quickly in anticipation of an impact.

However, bear in mind that the airbag ECU has a sophisticated algorithm to inflate a single airbag or airbags to different capacities. The ECU also determines when is the best time to inflate.

For example, a lowside triggers the inflation of a single airbag, leaving the other as a spare. The rider may choose to carry on riding. The inflated bag will deflate in short order, as well.

At the Silverstone round however, the sensors would’ve picked up that Dovizioso was flying through the air and inflate the both bags a little later so that he’d have a softer landing. Inflating too soon would mean the airbags could be below optimum inflation.

We’re thankful that the FIM mandated that airbags are compulsory in all three classes.

Quartararo’s airbag inflated completely within 0.060 second while he was flying in the air before his landing and absorbed the shock. It was also scary to see that his crash lasted 4.7 second. That’s an eternity in an accident.

Dovizioso’s suit data showed why he came away more banged up. The Italian’s airbag inflated completely within 0.145 second. It took longer because he was flying higher in the air.

Compare how Quartararo took one big impact to Dovizioso’s multiple impacts. Remember, it’s not how you crash but how you stop that causes the seriousness of the damage.

The Alpinestars Tech-Air system works on a complex algorithm which determines the best duration and type of inflation based on data from gyroscopes spread around the suit.

For example, a lowside crash results in the suit inflating the first stage. The rider could get back on his bike and continue as the bag will deflate itself later.

In the event of a heavier crash like this one, the algorithm fires the airbag completely.

We’re all thankful that both riders walked away without more serious injury. This type of crash would’ve resulted in permanent injuries before the advent of the airbag equipped racesuit.

We only wish the technology was more affordable to road riders.

Siapa sangka Petronas Sepang Racing Team (SRT) mampu melakar nama di pentas MotoGP sejak membuat keputusan untuk naik ke kelas premier bersama Yamaha setahun yang lalu.

Kini pasukan yang mempertaruhkan Fabio Quartararo dan Franco Morbidelli itu berjaya menempah nama sebagai antara pasukan yang paling mencuri tumpuan apabila telah pun mengutip 161 mata – Quartararo (92 mata), Morbidelli (69 mata) – setakat ini.

Pengurus pasukan Petronas Sepang Racing Team (SRT) di saingan MotoGP, Dato Razlan Razali akui terkejut dengan keputusan yang dipaparkan pasukannya apatah lagi perlumbaan masih berbaki tujuh pusingan.

“Kami langsung tidak menjangka akan berada dalam kedudukan ini seleas 12 pusingan. Pada awalnya, kami mensasarkan kedudukan enam terbaik bagi Franky (Morbidelli) sementara Fabio (Quartararo) akan muncul pelumba muda terbaik.

“Tetapi kami tidak menyangka mereka mampu mencapai tahap ini, jadi kami sangat gembira,” jelas Razlan.

Razlan juga tidak dapat menyembunyikan keterujaannya terhadap prestasi semasa Quaratararo meskipun pada satu ketika ramai yang mempersoal tindakan Petronas SRT mengambil pelumba muda dari Perancis itu.

“Kejutan terbesar tahun ini datangnya dari Quartararo. Ketika kami mengumumkan dia sebagai pelumba kedua, ramai yang bercakap kami telah membuat pilihan yang salah tetapi dia berjaya membuktikan sebaliknya.

“Dia sememangnya pelumba yang berbakat,” ulas Razlan lagi.

Sementara itu, Razlan turut berasa bangga dengan prestasi Petronas SRT dalam ketiga-tiga kelas – MotoGP, Moto2 dan Moto3.

“Pasukan Moto3 telah wujud sejak 2015 sementara Moto2 baru memasuki usia setahun. Meskipun kedua-dua pasukan ini berdepan pelbagai cabaran namun mereka masih mampu mengekalkan keserasian sebagai satu pasukan.

“Sebagai rakyat Malaysia, kami bangga kerana wujudnya sebuah pasukan MotoGP Malaysia. Secara tidak langsung menjadikan kami duta Malaysia yang bangga kerana dapat berkongsi kenyataan ini di serata dunia. Saya bangga dapat mewakili negara di padok,” katanya.

 

Pada masa sama, Razlan akui ramai pihak seakan cuba mengorek rahsia kejayaan Petronas SRT di saingan MotoGP namun dia menjelaskan kejayaan ini bukanlah satu magis malah ia hasil daripada pengalaman yang ditawarkan beberapa individu penting.

“Setiap individu menawarkan pengalaman serta sumbangan maksimum kepada pasukan. Sebagai contoh, Johan Stigefelt pakar dalam menguruskan perihal logistik sementara Wilco Zeelenberg memiliki banyak pengalaman di pentas MotoGP dan Yamaha.

“Setiap individu memainkan peranan dengan baik dan kami sentiasa berkomunikasi bagi memastikan segalanya berjalan lancar. Mungkin itulah rahsia kami.”

Serentak dengan itu, Razlan tidak sabar untuk menyaksikan Petronas SRT MotoGP beraksi buat julung kalinya di Sepang di samping mahu pasukan menampilkan aksi mantap di Moto2 dan Moto3.

“Ini merupakan aksi sulung Petronas SRT beraksi di laman sendiri sebagai pasukan MotoGP. Kami menjangkakan kedua-dua pelumba menampilkan aksi baik dan jika (Khairul Idham) Pawi sempat kembali di Moto2, saya yakin dia juga mampu melakar keputusan cemerlang.

“Kami telah pun menjangkakan seramai 200,000 kunjungan pengunjung di Sepang dan 150,000 akan memenuhi hari perlumbaan. Kami tidak sabar untuk beraksi,” tambahnya lagi.

Things definitely looked different when the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) CEO and PETRONAS Yamaha SRT Principal, Dato’ Razlan Razali announced plans for Malaysian MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 teams last year.

Now the MotoGP team is performing not just beyond expectations, but no one would’ve dared to even give a thought about where the PETRONAS Sepang Racing Team is now. The scene was telling during the Yamaha Motorsport Launch at SIC just after the winter tests and prior to the season opener in Qatar.

While every journalist fielded questions to the factory Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP squad (mostly to Valentino Rossi, actually), Dato’ Razlan and his two riders Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo put up their best smiles while sitting quietly in between the factory and PATA Yamaha WorldSBK teams.

Because journalists know that the answers would’ve been, “We do not expect great results from the year ahead. We hope to finish every race and learn along the way.” Or anything to that effect.

Oh, how things have changed. Now every hack wants an interview with Dato’ Razlan and co.

The driving force is of course the super rookie Fabio Quartararo’s exploits. He’s been a consistent frontrunner and not afraid to mix it up with the Big Boys.

“When we announced him as our second rider, a lot of people told us we made the wrong choice – but now everyone agrees we made the right decision!” Dato’ Razlan said in an interview.

“There’s no way we expected to be in this fantastic position after only twelve rounds of the 2019 season. We were hoping for Franky to deliver top six performances and for Fabio to target rookie of the year. We didn’t expect both of them to do what they’re doing and we’re extremely happy and satisfied with them. To be able to deliver such strong performances for our title sponsor is key, and we’ve achieved even more than what was desired based on the targets we set at the start of the year,” he continued.

Dato’ Razlan is quick to credit the team, saying that the riders wouldn’t have performed so well without support. The team has since grown to 48-strong and enjoys good ambience and chemistry. But he is also quick to acknowledge that the team is young and nothing is 100%. Still, there’s no reason for him to feel proud.

“I also couldn’t be more proud as a Malaysian to finally have our own Malaysian MotoGP team. We can tell fans and media from across the globe that we’re Malaysian and we can act as our country’s ambassadors. We’re proud of that role and I’m honoured to be able to represent the country in the paddock.”

Speaking of the Malaysian MotoGP round, he added that, “The Malaysian Grand Prix is our home race, it’ll be the first time our MotoGP team will compete at Sepang, and we expect the riders to do well in MotoGP and Moto3, and if Pawi can come back in Moto2, then he can do well too!

“We’re already anticipating a bumper crowd with 200,000 spectators over three days, and 115,000 on race day. It’ll be a huge event for us, and we can’t wait.”

Dato’ Razlan concluded the interview by iterating that both Quartararo and Morbidelli will continue with the team in 2020.

Pelumba Petronas Yamaha, Fabio Quartararo mendakwa kemalangan yang menimpanya berlaku daripada kesilapan Alex Rins yanng memintasnya di selekoh pertama.

Quartararo mengalami insiden ‘highside’ lalu terbabas yang turut menyaksikan jenteranya dilanggar Andrea Dovizioso.

Dovizioso terpaksa dikejarkan ke hospital susulan mengalami hilang ingatan sementara apabila mengalami hentakan kuat susulan perlanggaran tersebut.

Quartararo kemudiannya menjelaskan bahawa kemalangan tersebut berlaku disebabkan Alex Rins yang hampir hilang kawalan.

Disebabkan mahu mengelak, pelumba Perancis itu telah melepaskan pendikit secara mengejut lalu mencetuskan kejadian ‘highside’. Quartararo menegaskan dia tidak akan terbabas jika Rins tidak melakukan kesilapan itu.

“Rins memintas saya di selekoh pertama tetapi dia mula hilang cengkaman di bahagian tayar belakang jadi saya telah melepaskan pendikit dengan agresif bagi mengelak daripada melanggarnya.

“Nasib saya tidak baik apabila senario itu mencetuskan ‘highside’, katanya menurut Motorsport.com

Aksi di Silverstone menyaksikan Rins berjaya merekodkan kemenangan kedua musim ini selepas Austin apabila dia berjaya memintas pendahulu kejuaraan, Marc Marquez di selekoh terakhir.

Tempat ketiga jadi milik pelumba Yamaha, Maverick Vinales sementara rakan sepasukan, Valentino Rossi yang bermula di petak kedua, meraih tempat keempat.

Dalam perkembangan lain, pengurus pasukan Ducati, Davide Tardozzi, memaklumkan bahawa Dovizioso telah diterbangkan ke hospital di Coventry untuk menjalani pengimbasan.

“Dia hilang ingatan untuk tempoh 15 hingga 20 minit.

“Dovi turut mengalami kesakitan di pinggul kanan namun doktor mengesahkan tiada sebarang keretakan berlaku.

“Kita tunggu keputusan imbasan tersebut dan diharapkan dia bebas daripada sebarang masalah,” katanya.
