electric bike

Swedish firm Cake has created the Cake Kalk, an electric off-road bike that’s a hybrid between a mountain bike and a motocross machine.

Weighing in at only 70kg, the bike is able to travel up to 80km at a top speed of 80km/h.

Each limited edition bike is priced at €14,000 (RM67,164).

When most of us think about the word Cake, we would normally associate it with a sweet confectionary or baked goods usually present during birthdays and other happy celebrations. Apart from that, did you know that there’s a Swedish who has successfully made a perfect hybrid between a mountain bike and an electric motocross machine? (more…)

  • Honda has unveiled the PCX Electric and PCX Hybrid at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show 2017.

  • Both bikes are slated to be sold in Asia from 2018.

  • Honda is pushing hard to meet the datelines set by certain countries to go electric.

While we were on the edge of seats and cheering our hearts out for our favourite racers in the 2017 Shell Malaysia MotoGP, Honda has launched the new PCX Electric and PCX Hybrid scooters at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show.

Honda says that both bikes will go on sale beginning 2018 across Asia.

The Honda PCX Electric is a fully-electric scooter featuring a high-output motor developed by Honda. However, its most novel feature is the Honda Mobile Power Pack, which consists of two detachable lithium-ion battery packs. Can’t find a charging station? Remove the Power Pack and bring it to a plug point.

The Honda PCX Hybrid, conversely, uses Honda’s newly-developed and original hybrid system specifically for motorcycles. The compact hybrid system employs a high-output battery and the AC generator (ACG) similar to the starter-type Idling Stop System in the current petrol-powered Honda PCX 150.

Both PCX Electric and PCX Hybrid look similar to the petrol PCX, except for a few differences.

Honda is pushing hard to go electric to meet the datelines set by many countries to prohibit the production of internal combustion engines within the next decade or two, in the interest of reducing greenhouse gases which contribute to global warmin. Honda Motor President and CEO Takahiro Hachigo added that the PCX Electric is part of Honda’s goal to increase production of EVs to two-thirds of all vehicle production by 2030.

In Asia, India is leading the way to go electric, having proposed 2030 as the dateline, while China will complete their EV infrastructure by 2022. Malaysia, on the other hand, is still stalling.

  • Russian arms maker, Kalashnikov is producing electric bikes for the military and police.

  • Kalashnikov will also supply the bikes to law enforcement during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

  • Militaries are getting into e-bikes because they are silent and don’t require fuel.

Kalashnikov, the Russian arms manufacturer best-known for producing the AK-47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova) assault rifle has recently shown off an electric motorcycle to be produced for the Russian military and police forces, reports Popular Mechanics. Kalashnikov Group presented the bikes at the 2017 Army International Military-Technical Forum in Moscow.

The e-bike is operational, evidenced by the promotional video (click here to watch), showing a rider unplugging the bike and proceeding to ride in sunglasses and a cap over rough terrain. The police version looks like a supermoto, for urban patrolling.

The manufacturer also announced supplying 50 of the bikes to law enforcement for the 2018 World Cup, which will be held in major cities across Russia.
Kalashnikov didn’t publish any technical data and we can’t read Russian, but a caption in the video shows 100km, most probably meaning the bike’s range. The police bike, however, is said to have a range of 150km.
The news of Kalashnikov’s e-bikes comes after the American firm, Logos Technologies’ announcement that they have been awarded the DARPA contract to research and built an electric motorcycle for the American special forces. According to Logos, their SilentHawk e-bike is based on the Alta Redshift MX e-bike with a range of 170km.
E-bikes are appealing to the military mainly because they are virtually silent compared to the racket of internal combustion engines. Besides that, being electric means planners do not have to sweat over the logistics of sending fuel to remote locations, especially during special operations. Also generally, motorcycles are smaller and lighter, hence the ease of transporting them.
But one thing that intrigues us is if the Kalashnikov bike is as resilient and reliable as the AK-47.
