Ducati Panigale V4

Ducati, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer, may be moving away from their signature desmodromic valve system, according to a recent report.

  • the Desmodromic valves delivers the best high RPM power.
  • the all-new Granturismo V4 engine uses conventional valve springs.

The desmo valve system is a unique valve control system that controls the valvetrain via two cams and two actuators, resulting in high RPM power. However, the system has a downside – the dreaded “desmo” service.

This service is a big service that needs to be done between 24,000km and 30,000km depending on the bike and can be quite expensive.

Ducati is aware of the desmo service’s infamous reputation and has started to move away from this system. In 2020, they introduced the V4 Granturismo engine in the Multistrada V4, which replaced the desmo valve system with conventional valve springs and a more durable timing chain. This resulted in a massive 60,000km interval between valve checks, the longest in the industry.

Ducati is working towards updating their mid-level family of bikes such as the Monster to also move towards conventional valve springs. The Monster shares its 939cc L-twin engine with many other bikes like the SuperSport, Multistrada V2, DesertX and Hypermotard, so this change may be seen in these bikes as well.

However, the top-of-the-line performance bikes like the Panigale and Streetfighter families will still retain the desmo system since it is the best for high RPM power.

Although this change may benefit Ducati owners by reducing maintenance costs, it remains to be seen how it will impact the brand’s identity and reputation for high-performance bikes.

Ducati’s new-gen Scrambler still has a desmo-valved engine, so it may be a while before we see that change on Ducati’s most affordable offering. Ducati fans can look forward to the upcoming changes and the improved ease of maintenance they may bring.

Ducati Malaysia has officially launched the 2022 Panigale V4 superbike for the local market.

  • The 2022 Panigale V4 get a host of aerodynamic and electronic upgrades.
  • the new electronic package ensures the Panigale V4 is even friendlier to ride.

Available in two trims, the base V4 is priced at RM148,900 while the top of the range V4 S can be yours for RM188,900.

The Borgo Panigale factory has made numerous improvements for the Panigale V4, aimed at refining the riding ergonomics and power.

Visually, the 2022 Panigale V4 gets a redesigned winglet, and despite appearing smaller, it produces the same 30kg of downforce at 270km/h.
Ducati also improves the engine heat distribution by revamping the belly pan, which now features two air slots on either side and a series of air slits at the bottom.
Despite the minimal changes, the improved cooling efficiency pushes the Desmosedici Stradale peak power to 215.5hp @ 13,00rpm and 123.6Nm @ 9,500rpm.
Other major changes include getting the SBK gearbox from the Panigale V4 R, whereby its first, second and sixth gear is made taller to allow for better gear transition. The new transmission also helps the Panigale V4 to achieve an extra 5km/h top speed than the 2021 Panigale V4.
Nonetheless, replacing the stock exhaust with a full-system Akrapovic race exhaust will help bump the peak power to 225hp and reduce the weight by 5kg to 190.5kg from its 195.5kg curb weight.
The new Panigale V4 also gets a 5mm longer suspension travel front fork which is said to help improve the front-end feel.
Meanwhile, the Öhlins semi-active suspension available on the 2022 Ducati Panigale V4 S now adopts Öhlins NPX 25/30 pressurized fork, which is fitted into the Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 event-based electronic control system.
The pressurized system managed the compression in the left leg of the fork with a 25mm piston, while a 30mm piston managed the extension in the right leg.
The swingarm pivot was also raised by 4mm to increase the anti-squat effect during acceleration.
Interestingly, to help the rider’s ergonomic, Ducati has made big changes to the fuel tank shape and material to allow riders to have better grip during braking and turning.
Ducati has also restyled the 5″ TFT display that now features two LED shifter lights at the top.

Most importantly, the 2022 Panigale V4 continues to offer 6-axis IMU, which include:

  • cornering ABS
  • traction control
  • slide control
  • wheelie control
  • engine brake control
  • up/down quickshifter

The D200 offers the proper bump in performance and sound, including substantial weight reduction, and creates a whole new aesthetic of the Panigale V4 by replacing the stock underbelly exhaust with an under tail setup.

The full-kit features titanium headers, titanium RHT silencers with carbon fibre end-caps, heat shields, brackets, ‘ Limited Edition’ plate, and (lasered) Titanium wording.

However, do not that the new D200 titanium exhaust system is only for track-use; therefore, they are not street-legal.

The Termignoni D200 titanium exhaust is available for EUR6,344 (RM31.2l).

Thankfully we are not the one to tell you how to get the most out of your 2021 Panigale V4. Instead, Ducati has taken the extra effort to tell you the proper way of doing it.

Ducati will publish seven videos on the company official website and their official YouTube channel with Ducati Official Tester Alessandro Valia and Ducati Superbike Development Team Leader Carlo Ricci Maccarini.

The Ducati Panigale V4 is a beast on and off the track with its 214hp and 124Nm.

Despite the fact that it already boasts a monstrous power, the wonderful people at Ducati decided that there is no such thing as enough power. This brings us to the Bologna-based motorcycle company latest product, the Panigale V4 Racing Accessories Kit.

The kit features a variety of racing-oriented components, including an Akrapovic Titanium Full Race Exhaust that increases peak torque and horsepower by six per cent.

Not only that, but the full-system exhaust also shed 5.4 kilograms off the V4.

However, the installation of the race exhaust requires an update on the engine mapping.

Moreover, the racing kit also offers an assortment of carbon fibre components, including a swingarm cover, clutch cover, chain guides, crankcase protector, and many more.

The looks of your V4 will look even more menacing with Rizoma mirror plugs and a tail tidy.

For those who are interested, the Panigale V4 Racing Accessories Kit will only cost you around USD8,200 (RM33,700).
