It is very evident that the Minister of Transportation, YB Anthony Loke is determined in revamping the transportation system and lowering accident rates in Malaysia.

Consequently, he is aware that certain quarters of the Rakyat will feel angry at his measures. “You can be angry at the Minister of Transport if you want to,” he said during the launch of Ops Bersepadu (Integrated Ops) and Road Safety Campaign 2019 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year, at the southbound Dengkil R&R.

The Minister made the remark after insisting that no discounts will be considered for the summonses for traffic offences issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ – Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan).

He justifies the decision as a move to reduce traffic accidents hence deaths among road users. To him, the attitude of waiting for discounts gives the impression that the summonses are unimportant, instead of educating road users to road safety.

“We don’t want road users to take the summonses lightly,” YB Anthony said.

He further added that he knows the measure will incur the ire among road users in the country.

“You can be angry at the Minister of Transport, if you want. But my task is to lower the accident rates in the country. That is part of my Key Performance Index (KPI),” he said.

He also said that he will intends meet with local authorities to not provide discounts for traffic summonses.

  • Motorcycle taxi e-hailing service Dego Ride has been warned to cease action.

  • The government will not allow the service due to safety concerns.

  • It was reported that Dego Ride restarted service last week after being told to stop by the previous government.

The Ministry of Transport sounded off another round of warnings to motorcycle taxi service Dego Ride to cease operations immediately or the government will not hesitate to take action.

Transport Minister, Anthony Loke Siew Fook iterated at a press conference that the government maintains its stance against motorcycle ride-hailing services mainly due to safety reasons.

“We will never legalise Dego Ride in Malaysia because we disagree with any type of ride-sharing services that involve motorcycles,” said the Minister after a Cabinet meeting at his ministry.

The government is baulking with the idea as there are already too many accidents involving motorcycles in Malaysia and believes that a motorcycle taxi service will only add to the statistics, what more involving passengers.

Loke also added that, “We will send enforcement officers to go after Dego Ride.”

The previous Barisan Nasional-led government had already disallowed the service in February 2018, citing the reason of Malaysia already having an extensive public transportation system.

Loke has since told the Dewan Rakyat in July this year that the government will not allow the service, due to the same concern regarding safety and the high number of motorcycle accidents and casualties.

However, the motorcycle taxi e-hailing service restarted their services in a small scale around the Klang Valley last week, as reported by Free Malaysia Today.

Founder of Dego Ride, Nabil Faisal Bamadhaj was reported to have met with Transport Ministry officials and was confident that Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad would allow the service to be revived.

  • The government is foregoing 3.1 million AES (Automatic Enforcement System) summons.

The government has announced that they are nullifying speeding summons recorded by the Automated Enforcement System (AES).

Transport Minister Anthony Loke made the announcement during a press conference earlier today in line with the Cabinet’s decision to take over the operations of AES from two private companies beginning 1st September 2018.

“This is a one-off,” he said, “There will not be any more such offers or discounts.”

However, no refunds will be paid to those who have paid their AES summons earlier, to whom the Minister addressed, “I know those who have paid will feel it is unfair that we are cancelling unpaid summons. I would like to say thank you and sorry at the same time.”

Only 690,000 AES summons were paid for since 2012, leaving 3.1 million unpaid worth RM430 million.

The agreement with the current operators is set to end on 31st August 2018, but the government has no plans to renew it. Instead, operations will be taken over by the Road Transport Department (JPJ – Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan). “Operations” means taking of photos and issuance of summons.

The decision to not renew the concessions agreement with Beta Tegap Sdn. Bhd. and ATES Sdn. Bhd. was “because the payment system to these two companies were lopsided and received public backlash. For every summon issued, RM16 was paid to them.”

“In 2015, the (previous) government had ordered Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) through its subsidiary Irat Properties to take over the operations of AES. RM555 million was paid to both companies for just 40 speed cameras along the highways,” revealed Loke.

  • The current laws regarding the minimum age for motorcycle license are currently being revised.

  • In order to curb street hooligans and street racing, there have been voices saying that the minimum age should be lowered.

  • Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has set up an online survey in order to collect information from the public.

Discussions and proposals are currently being submitted to the Ministry of Transport with the idea of increasing the overall safety of road users here in Malaysia. One of the said ideas is changing the minimum age requirement to obtain a motorcycle license. (more…)

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) together will start monitoring prices charged by driving institutes to obtain the car and motorcycle licenses.

Together with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the prices will be regulated to ensure fairness and justice across the country.

MOT minister Anthony Loke promises to look into the matter and driving institutes who are found guilty will get their operating license cancelled.

The Ministry of Transport Malaysia (MOT) will be making a few updates to the way Malaysians obtain their car and motorcycle licenses in the near future.
