Police are tracking down a motorcyclist who hit a schoolgirl while she was crossing near a school in Permatang Pauh, Penang, yesterday. The motorcyclist ran off without stopping.
Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris, said initial investigations found the incident occurred during school dismissal time.
“During the incident, the eight-year-old student was crossing the road with her friend before she was hit by a motorcycle.
“As a result, the victim sustained minor injuries to her left ankle. A police report regarding the incident has been received and efforts to track down the motorcyclist involved are underway,” he said in a statement.
Helmi said witnesses or members of the public with information related to the incident are urged to come forward to the Traffic Police Station of the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters or contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Azrol Md Rejab, at 019-5429571 to assist the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (Rule 10 LN 166/59), which is failing to properly control the movement of a vehicle.
A 42-second video depicting the accident had previously gone viral on the Facebook platform.
The video footage shows a security guard stopping traffic to allow two female students to cross the road.
However, a motorcycle failed to stop, causing one of the students to fall onto the road and sustain minor injuries.
