Midweight adventure bikes have experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, a trend that some publications say originated with the introduction of the KTM 790 Adventure. Subsequently, several other manufacturers have joined the fray, producing their versions of capable adventure-enduro machines. Many of today’s midweight ADV bikes focus on adventure by showcasing impressive off-road capabilities while maintaining commendable on-road performance.

When it comes to Japanese manufacturers, Yamaha initiated the trend with the Tenere 700, followed by Honda and Suzuki unveiling the XL750 Transalp and V-Strom 800DE, respectively. At present, Kawasaki has not yet presented a twin-cylinder model beyond its road-oriented Versys 650.

The focus of today’s narrative is Suzuki and the V-Strom 800DE. Suzuki boasts a rich heritage in rally racing, notably in the Paris-Dakar Rally, where the DR 350 and the DRZ 400 dual-sport machines demonstrated the brand’s capabilities. Subsequently, the formidable big-bore single-cylinder DR 650 showcased its prowess. Building on this heritage, Suzuki is launching a special-edition variant of the V-Strom 800DE named the Djebel, a tribute to the highest mountain in Tunisia, extending from the Atlas Mountains.

Suzuki introduced the V-Strom 800DE Djebel at the 2024 Motor Bike Expo in Verona, Italy. Adorned in a distinctive retro-themed livery, Suzuki describes the motif as symbolising the bike’s aspiration for limitless travel. The bike features Suzuki’s classic white and blue color scheme, with gold accents on the forks and wheels providing a visually striking touch. Beyond aesthetics, the Djebel edition is equipped with Dunlop Trailmax Raid tires, enhancing its off-road capabilities. Additionally, it features a titanium slip-on exhaust from Akrapovič.

However, concerning specifications and features, the special-edition adventure bike maintains the standard V-Strom 800DE specs. It is powered by a 776cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, parallel-twin engine. Positioned as the spiritual successor to its 650cc V-Twin engine, it delivers increased power and torque, boasting 83 horsepower and 73Nm of torque. The Djebel edition also incorporates advanced electronics, including switchable ABS, multiple ride modes, traction control, and an up-and-down quick shifter.

Initially introduced in the Italian market, the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Djebel carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of 13,900 euros, equivalent to approximately RM60,907. It is unclear if this model will be offered for the local market.

Suzuki Malaysia has launched the 2023 V-Strom 1050 DE (Dual Explorer) with a price tag of RM88,800. The latest V-Strom 1050 DE boasts a range of off-road features that make it perfect for adventure enthusiasts.

  • the V-Strom 1050 DE boast off-road oriented features including 21″ wheels and longer travel suspension.
  • Also added to the electronic package is Gravel Mode which increases the bike’s off-road capabilities.

One of the most significant improvements in the V-Strom 1050 DE is the 21-inch front tires, which provide better stability and control on rough terrains. The swingarm section of this bike is also longer than its predecessor, the 1050 XT, which increases the wheelbase and improves handling.

Moreover, the Suzuki V-Strom 1050 DE offers a ground clearance of 190mm, which is significantly more than the 165mm provided by the V-Strom 1050 XT with 19″ front tires. The Kayaba suspension on this variant has also increased by 10mm at the front and rear, providing a total travel distance of 170mm.

Suzuki has also improved the electronic package on the V-Strom 1050 DE, featuring a ‘Gravel’ mode matched with the latest IMU system. The bike’s ABS system can now be entirely turned off, and it is equipped with the latest setting from Bosch. Additionally, the 1050 DE comes with a 5″ TFT screen replacing the LCD digital display found on the 1050 XT, making it easier for riders to navigate.

The V-Strom 1050 DE also comes with a ‘quickshifter’ function as standard, enabling riders to shift gears without having to use the clutch. This feature makes the bike more comfortable to ride and is perfect for adventure touring.

Powering the 1050 DE is the 1,037cc 4-stroke, 90° V-twin DOHC engine – similar to the one found in the previous 1050 XT – that makes 107hp and 100Nm.

In conclusion, the new Suzuki V-Strom 1050 DE is a perfect motorcycle for adventure enthusiasts who love to explore off-road terrains. With its off-road features, improved electronic package, and enhanced TFT screen, this bike is a must-have for anyone looking for a perfect adventure tourer.

The Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX is a quarter-litre ‘baby’ dual-sport adventure motorcycle recently introduced in India.

  • All new Suzuki V-Strom SX is a ‘baby’ dual-sport packing the right style and features.
  • It harnesses the 250cc single lifted from the Suzuki GSX250R, offering 26HP and 22.2NM.
  • Key features include dual-channel ABS, digital dash with connectivity function, and more.

At the time, the baby V-Strom is an India-only motorcycle but the bike’s potential in similar Asian markets in undeniable.

That said, it is likely that the Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX could make its way to Malaysia soon.

We recently managed to witness the test mule on Malaysian road, indicating Suzuki Malaysia intention of introducing the baby V-Strom for the local market.

This is certainly an exciting development considering the 250cc market lacks ADV-type motorcycle.

Currently, the Benelli TRK 250 is the only contender in this segment in Malaysia.

For starters, it harnesses the same 250cc single derived from the Suzuki GSX250R, delivering about 26HP and 22.2NM of twist through a six-speed constant-mesh transmission.

The Suzuki V-Strom SX reportedly weighs in at about 167KG, which makes said output figures rather adequate.

The pint-sized V-Strom features a telescopic front fork with 120mm of stroke dialled in, and it’s paired with a rear swingarm-mounted rear shock offering seven-level pre-load adjustment.

The wheels, on the other hand, measure 19-inches un front and 17-inches at the rear. As for braking, it’s a single disc brake setup both front and aft, and both are tied to a dual-channel ABS suite as well.

Other notable features include a digital meter panel display brimmed with Bluetooth connectivity, USB charging port, all-LED lighting, as well as the novel Suzuki Easy Start System electric ignition suite.

The new Suzuki V-Strom SX is an interesting quarter-litre ‘baby’ dual-sport ADV machine, but it’s an India-only bike.

The official announcement of Kawasaki Motors Malaysia (KMSB) to Suzuki Malaysia Sdn Bhd is just around the corner and a lot of Malaysians are eager to know what they’ll bring to the table for the Suzuki brand here in the country. A small model like this possible Suzuki V-Strom 160 might just do the trick if you ask us. (more…)

After the launch of the Suzuki V-Strom, V-Strom XT and Gladius yesterday we were given a chance to sample the three bikes on the Shah Alam Go-kart circuit.

Not the best circuit to test a big bike as it was designed for more agile go-karts but it did give us a sneak peek to what the bikes are all about.

DSC_1430

First up was the V-Strom, the seat doesn’t feel too tall for an adventure style bike, at least for this 176cm tall rider.

Handle bar reach is just nice, not too far forward nor too close to the rider with a straight up seating position. At first the bike did feel a bit on the heavy side but generally ok as soon as you get going.

The Europeans with their bigger build love this bike as they throw it around the corners but being smaller, us Asians will find the V-Strom a bit bulky on slow speeds.

As mentioned the track was made for go-karts thus it was only possible to get more than second gear,, but for the shifting that we managed it was smooth with a nice clutch operation.

DSC_1425

Power wise the 650 V is lovely, with good low end and mid range torque, just a bit of throttle input and the V-Strom jumps into action and its an easy engine to regulate between slow and medium speeds.

The brakes feels ample for the speeds we were riding it, very grabby but still linear brake feel.

Next was the V-Strom XT, biggest difference was the spoke-wheels with 19” up front and 17” on the rear. Generally this would usually meant sluggish turn ins, it was there, almost unnoticeable but very liveable.

A good compromise between a smaller and more agile 17” wheel or roll over anything but sluggish to turn 21”.

Something did irk us though and it was the ABS, having a 19”spoke wheel meant the V-Strom XT have a more off-road orientation, however it was not possible to switch the ABS off nor did Suzuki say that the ABS is off-road friendly. A question we will answer as soon as Suzuki lend us a unit to be ridden on more familiar roads.

DSC_1492

Moving on it was the Gladius’s turn, close one eye and you might be forgiven to think its and Italian bike with those Trellis frame and V configuration engine, just with a bit more organic lines.

Low seat means this bike feels a bit more manageable for smaller riders, slightly forward riding position suits the bike’s characteristics.

It was small and nimble enough that we were able to get a bit more speed into the corners as compared to its to larger brothers, the V-Strom and V-Strom XT.

DSC_1489

While it was too soon to tell there was a definite deference in engine response or was it just because it’s a lighter bike.

DSC_1479

Quality with material and fitment feels and looks good on all three models, the only thing that we did feel was a bit off was the side mirrors on the V-Strom being slightly shorter to the handlebar.

The three bikes are definitely something you should check out if you are going for that class.

Suzuki Assemblers Malaysia Sdn Bhd further broadens their product line up with three mid-range models this morning with the Gladius 650 ABS, the V-Strom 650 ABS and the V-Strom 650XT ABS.

While all three are 650cc models, each caters to a different segment with its own unique appeal based on the rider’s desires.

DSC_1327

Starting with the V-Strom 650, its powered by a liquid-cooled 645cc V-Twin engine said to feature a good low and mid-range power with the dual throttle valve giving quick and linear throttle response.

It is coupled to a 6-speed transmission that have been tailored for active sporty rides with 1st through 5th gear ratios, while keeping highway cruises comfortable with a tall top gear.

DSC_1278

Holding things together is a lightweight and rigid twin-spar aluminum-alloy frame and swingarm and suspension wise its equipped with spring-preload-adjustable 43mm-stanchion-tube front forks and link-type rear suspension with rebound stepless damping adjuster as well as a spring preload adjuster.

Stopping power comes from dual 310mm-disc brakes for the front and on the back its 260mm-disc brakes complete with ABS system.

While sharing the same configuration and engine there are enough differences between the two V-Strom versions that it caters to a slightly different type of riders.

DSC_1281

The V-Strom 650 ABS can be said to excel at being the “Sport Tourer” while the V-Strom 650XT ABS is the “Sport Adventure” machine.
The V-Strom 650XT ABS has more adventurous styling with a distinctive front beak with integrated air ducts and wire-spoke wheels, 19” up front and 17 on the rear and it takes tubeless tyres.

DSC_1478

And then you can make it look more adventure ready with a long list of original accessories starting with top and side cases which are available in plastic and in aluminum. The side cases fit close to the bike’s centre of gravity for rider-friendly handling.

The plastic top and left side cases are each big enough for a full-face helmet. The side-case carriers can be detached using quick-release screws to keep the bike slim.

And thats not all, you also have the accessory bar, an aluminium under guard, a chain guard, LED fog lamps, touring windscreen, knuckle covers and low and high seats, centre stand, a 12-volt accessory socket, an alarm kit, and a handlebar satnav bracket.

DSC_1259

Last and not least of the three is the Gladius, the engine is about the same, a liquid-cooled 645cc V-Twin but with slightly different tuning for a more spirited riding experience.

While the V-Strom sits high and mighty, the Gladius seat is just 785mm off the ground but for taller riders they can opt for an optional higher seat that adds 20mm to the seat height.

Front and rear suspension feature adjustable spring pre-load, allowing the rider to adapt the bike to suit them.

DSC_1258

The Gladius comes in gray, blue and mat black options, while the V-Strom variants come in white, gray, red and blue.

Basic Sales Price for V-Strom 650XT ABS is RM43,900, V-Strom 650 ABS is RM41,900 and Gladius 650 ABS is RM39,900.

Other bikes already in the Suzuki showroom are the HAYABUSA 1300, GSX1250FA, GSX-R1000 ABS, V-STROM 1000 ABS and the GSR750.
