Sports Tourer

The long-awaited Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello are now officially available in Malaysia after it’s successful global introduction two-years ago.

  • The V100 Mandello is available in two variants; Standard and S.
  • The first production motorcycle to feature adaptive aero.

The V100 Mandello is available in two different trims, Standard and S with the latter features lavish components including Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 semi-active suspension, quickshifter, heated grips, TPMS and Moto Guzzi MIA system.

That said, the standard is available at RM99,900 while the S comes in at RM117,900.

The V100 Mandello is not just another new motorcycle coming from Moto Guzzi, it also represents the brand bold move into the 21st century.

This is due to the fact that the V100 is the first production motorcycle to feature semi-active suspension, 6-axis IMU, cornering ABS, quickshifter and a liquid-cooled engine.

Basically, it is the first Moto Guzzi with everything modern and we are surprised that the V100 Mandello even has an adaptive aerodynamics package. Nevertheless, as a sport-touring machine, the V100 Mandello still sport the classic element of a Moto Guzzi.

The V100 Mandello makes 115hp and 105Nm @ 3,500rpm from its 1,042cc transverse 90-degree V-Twin engine. The engine is also 103mm shorter than the V85 TT platform. Thanks to a lower positioning of the drive shaft, the V100 Mandello offers a smooth ride during accelerating and decelerating on par to a bike with a chain drive.

It also features a 17.5L fuel tank and a large saddle comfortable for riders and pillion. However, to increase comfort, the V100 is equipped with adaptive air deflectors located at the front fairing which extend to different degrees depending on the riding mode and bike speed.

According to Moto Guzzi, air deflectors can reduce wind disturbance up to 22%. Moving on to the best bits, the V100 gets Öhlins semi-active suspension, traction control, three engine maps, and three engine braking that can be accessed via a 5″ TFT display.

DIDI Group, the official distributor of Moto Guzzi brand’s in Malaysia is set to unveil the highly anticipated Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello in Malaysia on 22 June 2023.

  • the V100 Mandello is the firm’s first motorcycle to feature Öhlins semi-active suspension.
  • powering the sports cruiser is the firm’s latest 1,042cc transverse 90-degree V-Twin engine that makes 115hp and 105Nm @ 3,500rpm.

The sports-tourer will finally making it’s way to our shores just seven months after it’s global introduction back in November 2022.

The arrival of the all-new V100 Mandello is definitely something to look out for in 2023. However, we are more intrigued in finding out the price tag for the technologically advanced machine which is set to be unveiled in a week’s time.

Suzuki might be out of world championship racing but the brand is no doubt continue to remain relevant to this day.

  • Suzuki sold more than 700 units of the GSX-S1000GT in UK last year.
  • The GSX-S1000GT is available in Malaysia for RM85,700.

In a latest announcement, the House of Hamamatsu has confirmed that the GSX-S1000GT has been the best-selling sports touring machine in the UK in 2022.

Despite only went on sale in April, Suzuki managed to sold 781 units by end of last year making it the top-selling sports tours touring motorcycle.

In addition, Suzuki anticipated that the number could reach 1,000 unit by end of March this year.

“Of course, we’re delighted with the popularity and success of the GSX-S1000GT. It was launched to high praise in the autumn of 2021, and we were seeing a huge number of reservations and orders before the bike had even arrived in dealerships.

“Despite that, and though it presented challenges, we managed to keep up with demand and we’re on course to top 1,000 sales by the end of its first year on sale, which is a fantastic achievement and something we’re all pleased with and proud of,” said Suzuki Great Britain head of motorcycles, Jonathan Martin.

Although it was build based on the heavily revised GSX-S1000 frame and powerplant, the GSX-S1000GT brings an altogether different vibe.

With optional panniers, comfy riding ergonomics, and an all-new electronic system, the GSX-S1000GT could be Suzuki’s ultimate sport tourer motorcycle.

At the heart of the motorcycle sits the same inline four-cylinder 999cc Euro5 engine you get from the GSX-R1000 and is detuned with revised cams, new air-box, and new exhaust to deliver 152hp @ 11,000rpm and 106Nm @ 9,250rpm.

Major electronics upgrade is a new electronic actuated throttle and Suzuki Intelligent Ride system that brings together riding modes, traction control and most importantly, cruise control system.

The Suzuki GSX-S1000GT is also currently available in Malaysia for RM85,700.

The Kawasaki H2 SX is perhaps the most powerful sports tourer available in the market and for 2023, the supercharged machine will feature auto-high-beam.

  • The Kawasaki H2 SX received significant update in 2022 including a new radar sensor technology.
  • For 2023, Kawasaki adds Auto-High Beam to the H2 SX electronic package.

Not much has changed on the 2023 H2 SX as the potent sports tourer already fitted with a host of upgrade last year including a twin radar system that features adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and blind spot detection.

Kawasaki also equipped the H2 SX with a new 6.5-inch TFT in 2022 that allows the bike to get connected with Kawasaki Rideology app.

Nonetheless, the most significant upgrade for 2023 is the introduction of the Auto High Beam (AHB) function.

Although the name itself is self-explanatory, the AHB works together with the light-detecting sensor which then send information to the computer to notify when it is necessary to activate the high-beam.

The on-board cameras detect the light level from the bike’s surrounding including street lights and vehicles and calculate the whether the high-beam should be engaged.

“For the system to function, the dimmer/passing switch must be set to high beam and the bike must be travelling above 20 km/h in darkness. With the system engaged a green icon is displayed on the 6.5” TFT multifunction, colour instrument screen,” said Kawasaki.

Additionally, Kawasaki also welcome the return of the SE variant in 2023, which features Kawasaki Semi-Active Electronically Damped Suspension with Skyhook.

BMW Motorrad has introduced the BMW Concept 9cento middleweight sport-tourer.

The Concept 9cento is essentially a combination of the S 1000 XR’s looks and the F 850 GS’ engine.

A new middleweight sports-tourer is indeed something BMW Motorrad is planning to add to their line-up in the near future.

BMW Motorrad took things to a whole new level during the recent Bike Shed Show in London a couple days ago when they introduced a brand new BMW Concept 9cento. To put things into perspective, it’s like a combination of the BMW S 1000 XR and BMW F 850 GS into one awesome package. (more…)

Rumour has it that Suzuki and Kawasaki are developing parallel twin 250cc tourers to provide new entry-level additions to their dual-sport ranges.

According to sources in Japan and India, Suzuki is developing the G-Strom 250 (basically a mini V-Strom 650), meanwhile Kawasaki is working on a Versys 250.

The G-Strom 250, which is expected to be based on the Suzuki Inazuma 250, will apparently be providing an adventure-styled bike, with power coming from a 250cc parallel twin engine.

The Kawasaki Versys 250 on the other hand, is expected to share the frame and the engine of the Ninja 250 and the Z250 sold here.

Although there has not been any official announcement or any solid evidence regarding these two bikes, the idea of smaller-engined, cheaper bikes with the stance and look of ‘big’ adventure-style machines does sound possible as the 250cc bike market has seen rapid growth lately.

With models like the KTM Duke 390, RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 250, and Z250 selling like hot cakes here, there is no reason for manufacturers to not take full advantage of the high demands of the sub RM35,000 segment.

While the Versys 250 and the G-Strom 250 remain as rumours, let us stay tuned for further updates from the manufacturers.

BMW Motorrad Malaysia today unveiled the highly anticipated S 1000 XR and the R 1200 RS.

Meanwhile, the New BMW R 1200 RS carries the original all-round qualities of the RS production bikes from almost 40 years ago. With a flat-twin boxer engine which is the same DOHC drive unit which powers the New BMW R 1200 GS, the New BMW R 1200 GS Adventure and the New BMW R 1200 RT, the new sports tourer delivers a maximum output of 125 hp and a peak torque of 125 Nm.  According to BMW, the torque figures at low revs for the RS are slightly higher than the R 1200 GS, GS Adventure and RT variants.

Other highlights include a maintenance-free cardan shaft that is positioned on the left side of the engine, a 2-in-1 exhaust system with a controlled exhaust valve, a redesigned airbox, an upside-down telescopic fork with 45 mm sanchions, EVO Paralevel single-sided swingarm, two standard riding modes, and a multifunctional instrument cluster among others.

Kawasaki’s all-rounder Versatile System bike offers an exciting way to beat the rigours of daily commuting, yet is much at home for touring purposes just like its predecessor. The ‘do it all’bike gets you around the city Monday to Friday, but is also versatile enough for long tours on weekend getaways or holidays. (more…)

A friend recently told me the wife or the Ministry of Finance as he fondly calls her said he can finally trade up his 250cc bike, thats the good news.

However since he has been riding for at least two years he is in a conundrum as he cant decide on what bike to go for since the bike have to cater to three types of riding that he plans to do.

DSC_0189

It has to be practical enough to replace a car to go to work (once in a while if not everyday) like his Ninja and at the same time comfortable enough for some long distance riding. Many can easily fill those points however the last bit is the hardest to fit which is the bike has to be fast enough and fun for track days.

After looking at a long list of bikes available now in Malaysia, it seems that Kawasaki holds the answer to his salvation, it’s the big brother to his Ninja 250, in the form of the Ninja Z1000 SX.

DSC_0190

This bike have been in the market for slightly over one year but still not many on the road as most riders go for the more touring centric GTR, another good bike and easily fill his first two criteria but a bit too bulky for trackdays.

Starting with the heart of the machine, the Ninja 1000 comes with a tweaked 1043cc liquid cooled in-line four, the same one in the Z1000 even down to the nice and easy 6-speed multi wet clutch transmission.

It makes the same 138hp and usable power comes as low as 3500rpm and spreads out all the way to redline. Silky smooth, very linear power delivery and quite rev happy, the perfect storm some would say.

DSC_0150

While the whole bike weights about 230kg, it does not feel so as the almost straight up sitting position and low centre of gravity makes the Ninja 1000 feels nimble and easy to manoeuvre instead. Without the panniers you can easily navigate the busy city streets and commute to work on it if you want to.

But even with the panniers on, its still very manageable as the pannier system was designed along with the bike and it sits very close between the bike centre line and handle bar. And with some bikes thats designed with panniers, they look a bit silly and naked without the cargo boxes off, the Ninja 1000 look good with or without its panniers, not the best looking but smart enough to get a second glance from others.

DSC_0093

And the upright sitting position not only helps while riding in traffic but also perfect for those long-distance travel. The moderately low seat is plush and supportive, which is the opposite of the Z1000. The passenger seat though looks more like an ornament, ok for short stints but not more than 20 minutes before she starts complaining.

The large fuel tank takes 19litres and on touring mode this bike was frugal enough that I didn’t even worry so much about where to find fuel and just enjoy the ride. Wind coverage is good for a sports tourer thanks to the adjustable windscreen and body cowling.

Get to the track and all you need to do is go to the sports mode on the engine and lower down the windscreen to the lowest setting and off you go, even at that setting there is still enough room for you to tuck in behind the screen.

DSC_0194

The grippy brakes makes slowing down and stopping quick, easy and drama free while the adjustable suspension, monoshock on the rear and usd fork upfront makes the bike adaptable to different riding style and weight though with a bit of tweaking around.

All in all if you are hoping to get something that could do the same like my friend wanted here then the Ninja 1000 is probably your best bet.

Engine: Liquid-cooled, in-line 4cyl, DOHC, 16v, 1,043cc
Transmission: 6-speed return
Power: 138hp @ 7,000rpm
Bore/Stroke: 77.0 x 56.0
