John McPhee

It was one of the most thrilling Moto3 race over the last few years, which saw 16-year-old KTM Ajo rider, Pedro Costa won his maiden victory in Qatar last Sunday.

However, the race was stained by a fight between John McPhee and Jeremy Alcoba.

The Petronas Sprinta and Gresini rider were a part of the lead group in Sunday thrilling encounter at Losail before they both involved in an accident at Turn 1 at the start of Lap 15.

Alcoba ran into Darryn Binder rear tyre and crashed out before the bike flicked and hit McPhee’s head and took out the rider from his machine.

McPhee, who endured the same fate a week before, lashed out at Alcoba in the gravel trap and managed to land a kick, with the latter also retaliated.

McPhee later issued an apology for the incident.

“I let my emotions get the better of me in Qatar, having been taken down for the second week in succession as a consequence of another rider’s mistake.

“I must apologise for my conduct – I didn’t react well to the incident.

“It is an adrenaline-fuelled sport, with obvious inherent danger; having a competitor’s bike strike my head triggered an out-of-character response, and I’d like to apologise to the fans, my team, Petronas and our partners.

“I accept the penalty and will move onto Portimao focused on the task at hand,” he explained.

Both of the riders were hit with EUR1000 fines for their behaviour and will start the Portuguese GP from the pitlane.

Alcoba will start 5s after the rest of the pack while McPhee is forced to wait for 10s before setting off.

John McPhee rode a gritty Moto3 race at the French GP to give the Petronas Sprinta Racing Team their maiden victory.

The Scottish rider had see-saw beginning to the weekend but managed to capture pole position in Q2. He was also fastest during the morning’s warm-up session.

McPhee was third at the end of Lap 1 but he hung in there, keeping himself in the top three for most parts of the race.

Again, it was Tatsuki Suzuki who led from the start. Although pursued closely by the group, Suzuki controlled the pace from the front. Unfortunately, his bike’s rear tyre slid under him in Turn 3 on Lap 17.

By then McPhee and Lorenzo Dalla Porta have gone through. Suzuki’s crash opened up a gap behind the duo, leaving them to duke it out to the finish. But it was McPhee who held the advantage from the penultimate lap and past the finish line. Della Porta finished second, while Aaron Canet battled his way up to come home in third.

The victory was also the first podium for McPhee in three years.

  • Ex-British Talent Cup rider, John McPhee is rumoured to be riding for the SIC Moto3 team next year.

  • McPhee made a huge impression in his debut season.

  • It all depends on whether Ayumu Sasaki or Adam Norrodin heads up to SIC’s Moto2 team.

There has been much talk about John McPhee joining the SIC (Sepang International Circuit) Moto 3 Racing Team for the 2019 season, despite the Scotsman remaining tight-lipped about his future.

“It certainly looks like I’ll be continuing in Moto3, although it was nice that there were a couple of Moto2 offers there,” he told Crash.net, “Hopefully I should know for sure in the next couple of weeks, which team it’ll be and which bike I’ll be on.”

The Scotsman made a great impression in his first Moto3 season last year by regularly challenging for the lead and running in the top 10. He went on to win his first race at the 2017 Czech Republic Grand Prix, in addition to a total of five career podium finishes including at the Sachsenring recently.

He eventually finished seventh overall in his first season with the Dorna-funded British Talent Cup team, and was then moved to the CIP Green Powerteam for the 2018 season. He was without a ride at the beginning of the 2018 season after the project ended.

The SIC Moto3 seats are currently occupied by Asia Talent Cup Champion Ayumu Sasaki and our local boy, Adam Norrodin. Needless to say, both riders would want to move up to SIC’s Moto2 team, which has Niki Tuuli as the sole rider. SIC could very well expand the team to two bikes and riders for 2019.

Besides that, SIC will also run a MotoGP team from next year. The rider line-up has to be announced, they are set to do officially do so later at the Silverstone round.
