Speaking of helmets, brands like AGV, Shoei and Arai have cemented their status in the motorcycling industry, including protecting some of the world’s greatest motorcycle racers.

  • Scorpion introduces new Covert FX retro-style helmets.
  • The Covert FX meets the latest ECE22.06 homologation standards.

However, in recent times, Scorpion has also proven to be part of the elite, especially with the successful partnership with 2021 MotoGP World Champion Fabio Quartararo and 2022 WorldSBK Champion Alvaro Bautista.

Of course, a helmet brand doesn’t play a big part in a racer’s success on the track, but it indeed jumps on the bandwagon surrounding the racer’s achievement, thus making it widely known. 

Thanks to the brand’s success in recent times, Scorpion has been able to release a new range of helmets called the Covert FX.

The Scorpion Covert FX is a retro-inspired helmet with similar vibes to Simpson and Biltwell. 

Despite the retro-touch, the Covert FX meets the latest ECE22.06 safety standard thanks to its TCT fibre construct shell that offers excellent impact dissipation. 

The Covert FX is also fitted with a Kwickwick3 inner lining with soft and hypoallergenic coating. Other standard features include a drop-down sun visor and adequate front, top and rear ventilation. 

The Scorpion Covert FX will be available starting December 2022 for EUR249.90 (RM1.2k). 

The highly anticipated Honda CL500 has arrived in a retro-style motorcycle that features the same powertrain as the CMX 500 Rebel.

  • From rumour to realitiy, Honda brings the CL nameplate back to modern times. 
  • Features the highly-capable 500cc parallel-twin engine found in the CMX 500 Rebel. 

If the CL nameplate sounds familiar to some of you that’s because the motorcycle was quite popular back in the day with its 125 to 450cc range. 

Nevertheless, the CL nomenclature has made a comeback in the form of the new CL500. 

Firstly, the CL500 features some similar specifications to the CMX Rebel, although the low-sub sub-frame has been replace with a rear-end that pays homage to the original CL-series including a high slung exhaust. 

As you can expect, powering the CL500 is the same 471cc parallel-twin cylinder engine found in the CMX Rebel that produces 45.9hp and 43.3Nm peak torque. 

However, new on the CL500 is a shorter final drive for more power from the get go and an updated fuel injection settings. 

Meanwhile, the power is delivered to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual transmission mated to an assist/slipper clutch for seamless clutch feel. 

Honda claimed the retro motorcycle tips the scale at 192kg which is an extra kilogram heavy than the Rebel. 

Other notable features include:

  • 41mm telescopic forks
  • rear twin shocks with 5-step preload adjustment
  • 2-piston calliper (front) with 310mm disc
  • single piston calliper (rear) with 240mm disc
  • 19” front wheel, 17” rear wheel with Dunlop Mixtours tires
  • 12L fuel tank

In addition, the CL500 gets a new riding ergonomics thanks to its scrambler-style bodywork. That said, the seat height remains at 790mm. 

To complete the retro look, the CL500 is equipped with a reverse LCD display.

Keeway has been making great strides in the Indian motorcycle market with a wide range of models.

  • The Keeway SR125 is a retro-style motorcycle powered by a small 125cc engine.
  • The SR125 will join Keeway’s 250cc bobbers and 300cc scooters. 

Retailing at INR119,00 (RM6.8k) the SR125 is undoubtedly one of the most expensive 125cc motorcycles in the country.

Nevertheless, the SR125 stays true to the retro-style DNA, including a straightforward design, an exposed frame and a 14.5L teardrop shape fuel tank.

Meanwhile, the single-piece brown saddle and circular halogen headlamp complete the retro vibe.

More importantly, the Keeway SR125 allows for customization jobs, making it the most significant choice among younger riders.

However, the SR125 will struggle to compete in terms of power as the 125cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine can only produce 9.7hp and 7.7Nm.

According to Keeway, the SR125 is available in three colourways; glossy black, glossy red and glossy white.

MForce Bike Holdings Sdn Bhd recently launched the new MForce Smart Shop SH Bikers showroom in Sri Kembangan.

  • Brixton Cromwell 1200 is to be available in Malaysia soon.
  • Features 1200cc two-cylinder engine capable of producing 80hp and 110Nm. 

During the launch, MForce also previewed the all-new Brixton Cromwell 1200 from Brixton Motorcycles.

For those not in the loop, Brixton Motorcycles is a brand owned by Austrian-based KSR Group. However, the manufacturing plant is located in China to ensure the brand remains affordable for the global market.

Nevertheless, the Brixton Cromwell 1200 (codename GK1200) first appeared at the 2021 EICMA show in Milan. 

The Cromwell 1200 is equipped with a 1,222cc parallel-twin SOCH liquid-cooled engine capable of pushing around 83hp @ 6,500rpm and peak torque of 110Nm @ 3,000rpm.

The retro machine adopts the same basic design as the iconic Triumph Bonneville, with a circular headlight, flat seat, spoke wheels and two long chrome exhausts running parallel to the ground.

Mechanically, the Cromwell 1200 features KYB suspension, Nissin brakes, Bosch electronics including ABS, traction control and multiple riding modes. 

It also packs with full LED light setup and a TFT display.

The bike is also fitted with cruise control, making it suitable for a long trip. 

According to MForce, the bike is still in testing stages and is currently undergoing an endurance test to ensure it passes all the requirements before being put on sale in Malaysia.

The Brixton Cromwell 1200 is said to be available for around RM50k once it is officially launched in Malaysia. 

For the most part, the classic-style retro scooter segment is very much dominated by Vespa.

  • Scomadi infiltrates the Japanese market with two new scooters.
  • TT 125 and Turismo 125 offer a unique styling and share the same 125cc engine. 

The Vespa brand not only is known for its premium scooter, but the brand is also associated with fashion and culture. Its recent collaboration with Dior and Sean Wotherspoon is solid proof.

While the Vespa brand has established dominance in its segment, it hasn’t stopped other companies from trying to emulate the Italian success.

Scomadi is probably the closest brand you can get your hands on that features a similar Vespa-ish bodywork but with a friendlier price tag.

The British-owned brand initially manufactured its scooters in China by Hanway Motors in 2005 before the company opened a new manufacturing plant in Thailand following its separation from Hanway in 2017.

Scomadi opened a new factory, also in Thailand, in 2020, and the new plant continued the Turismo Technica 125 and Technica 125 production.

However, Scomadi is planning to expand its reach in Asia as the company recently launched the TT 125 and Technica 125 in Japan.

The TT 125 could be a hit among urban riders, considering it offers Vespa-inspired styling. At the same time, the Turismo 125 features a unique design thanks to the exposed bodywork, as if someone cut the body intentionally.

Nonetheless, despite the classic look, both scooters are fitted with two USB chargers and a Type-C outlet too.

Powering the TT 125 and Turismo 125 is a 124.6cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that produces 9.39hp @ 8,000rpm and 9.67Nm @ 7,2000rpm.
