  • Jorge Lorenzo may head to Pramac Ducati in 2020.

  • Jack Miller’s contract deal has been delayed.

  • Miller says that it may be due to Lorenzo’s negotiation with the team.

In a shock bit of gossip, Jorge Lorenzo may eye a seat at Pramac Ducati in 2020. Even more intriguingly, current rider Jack Miller says his contract deal is delayed because of Lorenzo.

It’s the mid-season break for the MotoGP paddock and this is when deals are signed and time for the people involved to talk.

Rumours of Lorenzo may quit Honda for a Ducati ride next year started surfacing a few days prior but most (including us) dismissed it as just that – rumours. Why would he leave a factory team for a satellite team?

Miller had earlier joked that his 2020 contract was being “sent to him,” only to discover that Lorenzo had entered negotiations with his team. The Australian wasn’t happy and didn’t mince his words, “I think there is some truth to the rumours about Lorenzo. For sure he’s looking at something because at the moment he can’t ride the Honda. It’s easy to tuck your tail between your legs and run back,” said Miller to Crash.net.

“I thought we were waiting on paperwork but clearly that’s not the case. There might be something else behind it, I don’t know yet. We’ll see. Once Jorge comes back from the Maldives or wherever he is, we’ll find out what I’m doing.”

Lorenzo is currently under rehabilitation after crushing his vertebrae in a crash. He had said that the Honda fits him better when he moved to the Repsol Honda factory team but is now reeling from poor results and injury.

  • Marc Marquez rode to his fourth victory of the season at the Catalunya MotoGP.

  • His Repsol Honda teammate Jorge Lorenzo brought down three other riders who were challenging Marquez for the lead.

  • Fabio Quartararo secured his and Petronas Sepang Racing Team’s maiden podium finish.

Marc Marquez rode to his fourth victory of the season at the Catalunya MotoGP, after dodging the carnage behind him. His Repsol Honda teammate Jorge Lorenzo brought down three other riders who were challenging Marquez for the lead.

Mission Winnow Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso was leading the charge into the “bus stop” Turn 10, but Marquez outbraked him, causing him to take a wider line into the corner. Behind them, Lorenzo was slipstreamed the three riders in front of him and outbraked Maverick Vinalez who was behind Dovizioso. Going for the gap, Lorenzo suddenly found the Ducati man sweeping back towards the apex, so he hit his front brakes and went down, clipping Dovizioso’s rear wheel. Both the Ducati and Honda then slid into Vinalez’s Monster Energy Yamaha, sending clattering off the track.

Valentino Rossi who was following closely in fifth had nowhere to go and ran over Lorenzo’s Honda. He remounted his Yamaha and rode back to the pits and out of the race.

That bowling session allowed Marquez to escape the intentions of his closest pursuers and he held on to the lead all the way to the chequered flag. The win increased his championship lead over Dovizioso to 37 points, up from just 12.

Behind him, a fierce tussle developed among Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati), Alex Rins (Suzuki Ecstar) and pole-sitter Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Sepang Racing Team).

It was clearly apparent that the Petrucci’s Ducati was much slower in mid-corner compared to the Suzuki and Yamaha, as they closed right back in after Petrucci opened up a gap on the straights. At one point, a frustrated Rins lunged aggressively inside Petrucci, putting tyre marks on the latter’s suit’s right sleeve and shoulder.

Rins kept up the pressure but Petrucci would not yield, until the former ran into a turn too fast and almost outbraked himself into a highside. Rins fell back to 7th and fought his way back up to 4th, eventually.

With Petrucci’s tyres spent in defending from Rins, Quartararo pounced. Quartararo had secured his second pole of the season on Saturday but was again out-dragged into the first corner at the start. Aggressive riders then pushed him down to as far as 9th. But he kept his patience and prevailed to score his and team’s maiden MotoGP podium, in their very first season.

Petrucci followed Quartararo in 3rdfor his 3rdpodium in three races. Jack Miller (Pramac Ducati) fought up the field to finish 5th, escaping Cal Crutchlow’s (LCR Honda) aggressive push (the Englishman crashed immediately after overtaking Miller).

In 6th was Rins’s teammate Joan Mir. It was his best finish of the season. Pol Espargaro once again did well to finish in a high position for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing in 7th. Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda) was the top independent Honda rider again in 8th. A resurgent Tito Rabat (Reale Avintia Ducati) came home in 9th. Johann Zarco finally finished in the Top 10 on the other Red Bull KTM Factory Racing bike.

There were only three other finishers, Andrea Iannone (Factory Aprilia Gresini), Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) and Sylvain Guintoli (Suzuki Ecstar).

11 riders did not take the checkered flag.

  • It was the 25thanniversary of Repsol and Honda’s partnership.

  • Some “modifications” are seen on Jorge Lorenzo’s bike, although the 2019 bike has the exact same livery.

For those waiting to see the 2019 Repsol Honda bike were surely disappointed as the livery remains unchanged.

Many had expected a new colour scheme as the Spanish petroleum giant and Honda celebrate the 25thanniversary of their collaboration. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the stale same-ol’-same-ol’ stripes.

However, there seem to be a few notable differences on Jorge Lorenzo’s bike (pictured above).

  • Polished aluminium frame and swingarm.
  • The fuel tank is extended at the rear. Lorenzo prefers to push his weight further back.
  • An extended seat stop.
  • Both bikes sport larger aerobodies.

The launch was held at the Sentul circuit in Indonesia. Current riders Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo were joined by past Repsol Honda champions Mick Doohan and Alex Creville.

The Repsol-Honda partnership began in 1994 when Doohan won the first of his five world 500cc GP championship. Alex Creville won the 1999 championship when Doohan crashed heavily during qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez and retired.

Of course, both current riders spewed team savvy answers about how happy they are with the team, how they are confident in winning, yada, yada, yada.

Marc Marquez will be in action at the shakedown test from 1st to 3rd February prior to the first 2019 pre-season testing from 6th to 8th February. Both tests will be held at the Sepang International Circuit.

  • Jorge Lorenzo fractured his wrist bone (scaphoid).

  • The rider needs surgery, but the scaphoid usually heals quickly.

Jorge Lorenzo fractured his wrist bone (scaphoid) and requires surgery.

The Spanish rider was due to join his new Repsol Honda team at their 2019 MotoGP season launch on Wednesday. He suffered the injury during his training at a dirt track.

MotoGP surgeon Dr. Mir will carry out the surgery. Dr. Mir also operated on Lorenzo’s new teammate Marc Marquez in November 2018.

The rider’s injury is at a bad timing since the first “winter test” at the Sepang International Circuit is just two-and-a-half weeks away. Hopefully, he will be fit by then.

The Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) will have something to worry about since Marquez is also recovering from a surgery to correct his dislocated right shoulder. Adding to that, Cal Crutchlow is reported to be still in some pain after breaking his ankle at Phillip Island, Australia last year. Hence none of their riders are 100% fit.

Lorenzo is not the first rider to break his scaphoid. Casey Stoner, the late Nicky Hayden, Stefan Bradl, Jack Miller, Kevin Schwantz have all fractured their scaphoids during their careers. Hayden’s were removed after they failed to heal and turned arthritic.

Scaphoid fracture

Scaphoid fracture is common as the human body automatically stretches out the arms and palms of the hand to break our fall. That is why motorcycle gloves are usually reinforced in that area.

  • Jorge Lorenzo has finally spoken about his first impressions on the Repsol Honda.

  • He rode it at the Valencia and Jerez post-season tests last year.

  • He joins Marc Marquez as part of Honda’s assault on the MotoGP championship next year.

Jorge Lorenzo says the Honda RC213V suits him better than the Ducati Desmosedici.

The five-time World Champion shocked almost everyone when he announced his switch from the Ducati MotoGP team to the Repsol Honda beginning this year. He took over Dani Pedrosa’s reins in the team after the latter announced his retirement from competitive riding.

Lorenzo has since ridden the Honda RC213V during the Valencia and Jerez post-2018 season tests. However, this was the first time he spoke out as his contract with Ducati expired at the end of 2018.

“Last season I rode a completely different bike, that was very big and very tall,” Lorenzo said. “Maybe it was a little too big for me. The Honda suits me better in terms of its dimensions. It is more compact, a smaller and lower bike, with which I can lean over better.”

“I felt a little more confident when entering corners, because the closer you are to the ground, the more confidence you have. The first impression was positive and I saw a lot of potential there.”

“In those moments your expression speaks for itself. It’s all very exciting, very new and enjoyable. Also, if the initial feeling is good, you can tell even more from your expression.”

Honda made a number of modifications to the bike for Lorenzo by the second test in Jerez.

It included a grippy fuel tank, which was similar to the changes made to the Ducati Desmosedici GP18. He won the Italian MotoGP immediately following the modification.

“One of the things that impressed me most was the ability of the Repsol Honda Team to react, providing what you ask for,” he said. “I was quite clear, Honda took note of all my indications and within a few days they had everything ready and we had a fuel tank almost one hundred percent to my liking.”

Lorenzo knows he has joined the most successful MotoGP team and looks forward to the opportunities that lay ahead of him. Indeed, the Honda team had won 15 riders’ championships, including Marc Marquez’s last year.

“Repsol Honda may be the most successful team in history,” he said. “They have the most victories and titles.”

“To compare them with a football team, they would be a Barcelona or a Real Madrid. There is no team with more titles and more importance worldwide than this one.”

The rider and his new teammate Marc Marquez are set for the first 2019 Winter Test at the Sepang International Circuit from 1stto 3rdFebruary 2019.
