Brad Binder

Brad Binder recorded his second MotoGP victory in his career after gambling on slick tyres in the final five laps in the wet at the Austrian GP.

It was a miracle win for the South African who decided not to enter the pit to swap his bikes with wet tyres with just six laps to go.

The KTM rider was out of the picture for the first 23 laps as Francesco Bagnaia, Marc Marquez and Fabio Quartararo battling it out for a top spot.

With six laps remaining, the track was hit with heavy rain, resulting in Marquez, Bagnaia, Quartararo, and Joan Mir entering the pit to swap their bikes.

However, Binder decided to gamble on slicks and went on to finished the race in the first place, followed by Bagnaia and Pramac’s Jorge Martin.

After the race, Binder said he dreamt about going up the podium after missing out for so long.

“I went to bed last night thinking all I want today is a podium.

“It’s been so long! It’s been the longest in I don’t know how many years since I was on the podium.

“I’ve been close a few times, had a few fourth places, but haven’t been back. To be honest, I was having a horrendous race before I decided to stay out, and everyone else came in,” he said.

This was Binder’s first podium of the season after missing out at fourth place last week at the Red Bull Ring.

MotoGP action will return in Silverstone at the end of August.

Brad Binder will remain with the KTM Factory Racing Team for the next three years after agreeing on a new contract.

The South African was a product of KTM GP Academy, competing in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup before earning himself a spot in the Moto3 and Moto2 championship with Red Bull KTM Ajo.

The 25-year-old rider also recorded his maiden victory in the premier class in his debut season onboard the RC16 last year.

“I am super happy to have signed again for three more seasons with KTM, and it will take us up to ten years.

“It’s incredible to have been with this manufacturer for such a long time now, and we’ve always had a good relationship.

“I’m extremely happy in KTM colours, so it’s extra happy to sign a long-term contract. It’s an honour,” said Binder.

“You have a lot of riders who are more clean and ride with a lot of respect for the opponents.

“You have some other riders like Binder, who ride a lot harder and don’t care about the rival,” said the multiple MotoGP world champion, Valentino Rossi, following a clash with Brad Binder during the season opener last weekend.

Binder slightly hit the Petronas Sepang Racing Team (SRT) rider in Qatar at Turn 1.

The 42-year-old rider then shares his opinion regarding the respect that current MotoGP riders have for their rivals this past few years.

“For me, it doesn’t depend very much on the position, but it depends very much on the different riders.

“Maybe, in this case, the word respect is too big, but it’s difficult to understand the limit because usually in the past sometimes you touch another rider, but you didn’t try to touch.

In his rookie season (and only his third race), Binder also set the record for the first South African rider to win a premier class race. (more…)

“Belum lagi!,” jawab Hafizh apabila ditanyakan tentang perancangannya musim depan.

Red Bull KTM Tech 3 confirmed today that South African rider Brad Binder will join the MotoGP team in 2020, while Malaysian rider Hafizh Syahrin is out.

Binder was the 2016 Moto3 champion on a Red Bull KTM and promoted to the Moto2 class for this season. Although the Moto2 team is suffering, Binder has distinguished himself by finishing on the podium twice in a row. He put in an especially extraordinary run in the last German Grand Prix at Sachsenring by charging to a second-placed finish from 19th on the grid.

He will be the first South African to compete in the premier class, partnering his old Moto2 teammate Miguel Oliveira.

This month has been speculated for months, following Hafizh Syahrin’s unfortunate form. He has struggled to gel with the KTM RC16 throughout the season hence finishing at the bottom of the field consistently. Although we are saddened by this news, we understand that racing is a business.

There are rumours that Hafizh will step back into Moto2. However, there is no word in which team. He may step onto Binder’s Red Bull KTM Moto2 or the Petronas Sprinta Racing Team, which is now without a full-time rider following Khairul Idham Pawi’s injuries.
