Andrea Dovizioso put in a fastest lap just 1.2 seconds off the fastest time in Race 1 of his DTM (Duetsche Tourenwagen Masters) debut at the Misano track, Italy.

It was Dovizioso’s one-off appearance in the German touring car championship, riving for the Audi Sport team. Ducati logos feature prominently on the car as Audi owns the Ducati brand.

“Desmo” Dovi finished a credible 12th position after working up the field from 15th. It was a commendable drive as he ended the race just one position behind his teammate Pietro Fittipaldi, who is also a Formula 1 test driver.

He has a chance to better the result in Race 2 today. The DTM series is a cut-throat racing series, featuring hard, no quarter given overtakes and ultra-competitive throughout. This is where German manufacturers battle it out for supremacy and bragging rights.

Dovizioso isn’t the first MotoGP rider to try his hands at auto racing. Fellow MotoGP competitors such as Valentino Rossi competes in rally racing annually. Other riders including Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo have also tested for auto racing teams.

The biggest challenge for two-wheel racers making the shift to four-wheels is usually about braking. As cars have four wheels that maintain contact to the tarmac at most times, brakes can be applied later and more aggressively compared to motorcycles. Another benefit of this is that racecars can carry much higher cornering speeds, too. Consequently, full-time riders need to concentrate more on breaking through this barrier.

  • As more cars are being fitted with anti-collision systems, Ducati is also developing theirs.

  • Developed together with Audi, the system uses the 5G network.

  • The system will warn the rider about upcoming danger but may apply the brakes automatically in the future.

Every motorcyclist knows that a collision with another vehicle sucks, but we push the thought to the back of our minds, like smokers who are aware of the dangers of smoking. Ducati aims to reduce the number of collisions with a new technology they developed together with Audi.

Called the Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) tech, it builds a picture of vehicles in the vicinity to provide situational awareness. It works over the developing 5G mobile network.

Ducati and Audi recently demonstrated the system’s controlled collision avoidance by using a Multistrada and two cars. The vehicles communicated with each other to avoid the impending disaster. There were two types of assistance, called Intersection Collision Warning and Across Traffic Turn Collision Risk Warning.

Key points of C-V2X

  • Ducati Advanced Radar Assistance System reads the road and monitors multiple vehicles simultaneously.
  • It senses slowing vehicles and warns the rider of a potential problem. It may reduce speed or brake automatically in the future.
  • A rear radar system detects obstructions in the rider’s blind spot and highlights it in the rear-view mirror.
  • Ducati and Audi say all vehicles will communicate with each other in the future and avoid collisions autonomously.
  • The technology also seeks to communicate with roadside obstacles such as traffic lights, road signs and speed limits.

The system provides warning to the drivers and rider of the dangers at this moment, but further development could see vehicle autonomy being gradually fitted to motorcycles. Autonomous cars are starting to come into the market as we reported previously (click on the link below for more information).

Self-riding Motorcycle to Test Autonomous Vehicles

The systems in cars automatically applies the brakes to avoid a potential collision even before the driver is aware of a problem. This solution is not only available in luxury cars as the new Perodua Myvi is equipped with an earlier iteration of the system.

While pundits may be scoff about autonomy, remember that the ABS was also derided when it first came into the market. But it is now the single component that had saved the most lives.

  • New device connects to the OBD II port in a car.
  • Allows drivers to track driving style.
  • Allows mechanics to suggest repairs or schedule routine maintenance programs.
  • Connects to loved ones in the case of an accident.
  • Kept secure by military grade software security.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd is offering drivers a new group-breaking solution to have their car connected to the internet, and have the car engage with its owners.

Called the Samsung Connect Auto, the new device plugs directly into the OBD II port underneath the steering wheel.

Once installed, the device uses real time updates, and alerts users to help improve driving behaviour, including increased fuel efficiency. The device also offers wi-fi connection to keep all passengers online while on the move.

The wi-fi connection and the overall system is kept secure with Samsung KNOX – the Korean company’s home-grown, market-leading, defense-grade mobile security platform.

The Samsung Connect Auto offers the mass market an affordable connected car solution that places safety and security first while enriching in-car and out-of-car experience. Leading car makers like Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, BMW all offer a connected car experience, but the mid and lower segment have yet to offer such an experience to its drivers.

There is also no news on whether the system will work with motorcycles.

Samsung Connect Auto will initially be available in the US with Malaysia being in the pipeline for a later introduction.

Samsung Connect Auto_1

How does it work?

Security is provided by KNOX security while interoperability is made possible by the Tizen OS. KNOX provides hardware and software security, including the applications. Prioritising security is what differentiates the Samsung Connect Auto from competitor products.

Software developers and auto engineers can further leverage on Tizen with Samsung’s Software Development Kit (SDK) to further evolve additional services. For example, drivers can leverage on a virtual mechanic that intelligently checks your car status from the on-board diagnostic port to recommend maintenance and repair services offered by a specialised network. This should enable quick notification of performance, and help reduce repair cost.

In the US, drivers can leverage on the ‘Usage-Based Insurance’ (UBI) feature by opting to share their vehicle data to receive valuable insurance offerings for safe and economical drivers.

For companies whose staff are constantly on the road with company cars, the system is able to log journeys and automatically generate an email report to help track expenses while travelling for work.

In an event of an accident, the device is able to notify the driver’s contacts and accident concierge services are provided. A ‘Find My Car’ app also helps locate your car in real-time using LTE and GPS.
