CONFIRMED: Jorge Lorenzo to race as MotoGP wildcard in Catalunya!

The Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP squad made a huge yet unsurprising return of Jorge Lorenzo into racing as news confirmed of his re-entry as a MotoGP wildcard. His return to the Yamaha YZR-M1 into racing will be set for the Catalunya MotoGP round which is set the first week of June 2020.

The round definitely makes a lot of sense considering that the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is the home of Jorge Lorenzo and the round’s main sponsor is Monster Energy (Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya). For the first time in a while, we will see five Yamaha M1 machines where Lorenzo will join the likes of Valentino Rossi, Maverick Vinales, Fabio Quartararo, and Franco Morbidelli.

The last time Lorenzo raced on the Yamaha MotoGP machine was back in 2016 (where he won the race AND sealed his fifth championship title) before jumping ship to Ducati. Two seasons with the Ducati Desmosedici showed potential but decisions were made before he made his way to Repsol Honda for 2019 and ultimately announced his retirement by the end of the year.

It wasn’t long before he was back with Yamaha but this time around, as their official test rider. Being the last rider who took home the championship for Yamaha in MotoGP, his assistance and expertise will hopefully bring some magic into the already strong squad as they prepare for the first round in April at the Circuit of the Americas.
