The Weekend Ride – New Hollywood Restaurant, Ipoh, Perak

  • Excellent halal Chinese food especially for breakfast

  • Best Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun

Welcome to another new addition of our Weekend Ride segment. For those of you who are new to the site, this particular article will highlight specifically on great riding destinations to go to for Sunday rides or even the entire weekend. This week, the go to destination is probably the best breakfast spot we’ve been to in a long while; the New Hollywood Restaurant located in the great city of Ipoh, Perak.

Situated just about two hours from Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh has been labelled before as one of the new ‘hipster’ towns. Some will agree that this can be either good or bad but looking from afar without experiencing what Ipoh really has to offer won’t do any good. In our personal experience, there are a lot of good breakfast spots which are closer to home but this will all change once you experience the glory that is the New Hollywood Restaurant.

Located at Jalan Lee Kwee Foh in Canning Garden, the shop is a true thriving soul of Ipoh. They are open all day but the most traffic is seen during breakfast hours where they serve a variety of halal breakfast items. The one that got us drooling every time we think about the place is their famous Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun. It is available in prawn or chicken variety and it is EPIC.

A chee cheong fun is essentially a steamed rice roll that is filled with a variety of different fillings served with a seasoned soy sauce. The usual variant comes in a very thick-like sauce which can be overpowering for some but the one at the New Hollywood Restaurant is made using a more light broth-like sauce.

Made fresh every day, a lot of folks of different races and backgrounds come flocking to this food haven to experience something that is quite rare in Selangor or Kuala Lumpur; halal Chinese food that is both delicious and cheap. Most similar styled establishments in Selangor or KL tend to be overpriced for the usual folks. If Chee Cheong Fun is not your thing, they do serve other wonderful varieties like wantan noodles, a selection of deep fried dough-like pastries called ‘cakoi’ and other wonderful delicacies.

Trust us when we say this, you have to try their Chee Cheong Fun. Made fresh using succulent prawns and juicy chicken, one plate won’t be enough. The only problem with this place is that during breakfast, you might have to wait for a table to be available since it is such a famous (and far from overrated) establishment.

It’s about two hours from Kuala Lumpur so we suggest getting the wheels rolling as early as you can. This is also due to the fact that heading up to Ipoh while the sun is breaking the night time covers in the morning is something calming and wonderful. Satisfy the food of your soul with the ride, satisfy your hunger with the food. Only in Ipoh.

A passionate individual when it comes to anything related to two wheels (or sometimes more), he enjoys the chaotic and magical world of motorsports as much as riding leisurely to the shops on his beloved Vespa. With an education-based background, he is always eager to learn and share about the poetic arts of motorcycling.
