Zongshen

After the unfortunate downfall of Norton Motorcycles in 2020, the prospects for the company’s promising range of 650cc twin-cylinder models seemed bleak.

  • The Atlas Ranger scrambler, Atlas Nomad retro-roadster, and the Superlight sportbike were poised to make waves, but the company’s collapse put a halt to those plans.
  • Zongshen to revived Norton’s 650cc twin-cylinder engine with a new roadster.

Nevertheless, the resilient spirit of the Norton twin-cylinder engine refused to fade away. In a remarkable turn of events, the rights to this modern marvel were licensed to China’s Zongshen, a well-respected player in the motorcycle arena. Armed with determination, Zongshen embarked on a journey of redevelopment, breathing new life into the engine that had once stirred the ambitions of motorcycling enthusiasts worldwide.

The result? The awe-inspiring Cyclone RX650 adventure bike, which recently debuted in the Chinese market, capturing the essence of Norton’s original vision. With a power output of 71hp @ 8,500 RPM and a peak torque of 52Nm @ 7,000 RPM, this reincarnated twin-cylinder engine stands apart in the crowded realm of similarly sized twins.

But the story doesn’t end there. Zongshen’s ingenuity has given birth to an enlarged 850cc version of the engine, promising even more power—98 horsepower and 80Nm of torque. The possibilities of what this revived engine can achieve seem boundless.

As for the design, the Cyclone RE650, an homage to Norton’s legacy, exudes a retro-inspired charm. The trellis-style steel frame pays homage to the RX650 adventure bike, while a genuine aluminum alloy swingarm and KYB upside-down fork contribute to the bike’s poised and modern appeal. The symphony of elements—wire-spoked wheels, an LED headlight, and meticulous proportions—creates a fusion of timeless aesthetics and contemporary sophistication.

One cannot overlook the eccentric asymmetry of the design, a clever nod to the flat-track heritage. The left side sports a distinctive side panel reminiscent of a number board, while the right unveils the rear shock in a bold fashion. An air intake on the left adds an element of intrigue that’s absent on the right, adding to the mystique of the Cyclone RE650.

Zongshen’s reputation in the industry speaks volumes, standing alongside esteemed brands like CFMoto and Qianjiang. The company’s association with Piaggio has yielded fruitful collaborations, including the recent RA900 V-twin roadster—a product of Zongshen’s creativity and the engine from the Aprilia Shiver 900. And the excitement doesn’t stop there; whispers of a reborn Aprilia Shiver, under the Gilera banner, echo in the air.

Chinese motorcycle manufacturer Zongshen has rolled out a distinctive offering for young enthusiasts seeking a taste of the biker lifestyle.

  • the Yomi 125 is a scooter in disguised as a classic American chopper.
  • powering the Zongshen Yomi 125 is a modest 124cc single-cylinder engine.

The recently launched Zongshen Yomi 125 breaks away from traditional norms, adopting the aesthetics of a classic American chopper in a compact, beginner-friendly form.

In a departure from standard motorcycle design, the Yomi 125 boasts an elongated front end with a relaxed head angle, reminiscent of iconic choppers. However, beneath its unconventional appearance lies a modest 124cc single-cylinder engine generating a humble 8hp and 7.2Nm of torque. This engine, paired with a scooter-inspired CVT transmission, ensures an easy and convenient riding experience, ideal for those new to motorcycling.

With a low seat height of just 65 centimeters and a featherweight 113-kilogram build, the Yomi 125 offers approachability for riders of all statures. The model’s affordability adds to its appeal, with a price tag of just CNY9,800 (RM6.2k).

While the Zongshen Yomi 125’s quirky design and affordability could attract a following among young riders in China, it seems that the manufacturer has no plans to introduce this unique mini chopper-inspired scooter to international markets.

Though the Yomi 125 may not revolutionize the motorcycling world, its blend of unconventional styling, ease of use, and affordability could serve as a stepping stone for novices, inviting them to explore the world of two-wheeled transportation.

Chinese motorcycle maker, Zongshen has introduced the new RC 401 R in China.

  • The RC 401 R is based on the standard RC 401 launched in 2022.
  • The Zonghsen RC 401 R makes 45hp and 35.25Nm.

Build based on the RC 401 presented in 2022, the RC 401 R is an up-spec version of the former and is differentiated by the addition of single-sided swingarm and an adjustable suspension from KYB, J.Juan dual front disc brakes and ABS.

Also, the RC 401 R is a lot sportier thanks to its lower clip ons and higher rear tail.

Nevertheless, the RC 401 R continue to make the same 45hp @ 9,500rpm and 35.25Nm @ 8,000rpm similar to the standard RC 401 as both model shares the same parallel-twin with liquid-cooled SOHC mill.

In terms of pricing, the Zongshen RC 401 R is priced at at CNY31,980 (RM20.6k) making it quite an affordable option in the 400cc segment.

Mitt is a Spanish motorcycle company that offers affordable, entry-level machines for young and new riders, mainly in Spain and Portugal.

  • Mitt to offer the 530TT Adventure motorcycle in Europe by 2023.
  • The 530TT is the biggest and most powerful motorcycle from the company’s portfolio.

The company can retain its affordable price tag by manufacturing its product in China via Zongshen.

Thanks to its Chinese partnership, Mitt is ready to take it up a notch by introducing the 530TT Adventure motorcycle for the European market.

The 530TT Adventure is the biggest and most powerful model in the brand’s lineup so far, featuring a 476cc parallel-twin engine that makes 47.5hp and 43Nm.

That said, the 530TT Adventure will go head-to-head with the Honda CB500X and Benelli TRK502X. However, it remains to be seen if the 530TT Adventure will feature the typical 180-crank or the modern 270-crank.

Similar to its competitor, the Mitt 530TT Adventure also features a straightforward setup, including a simple ABS, adjustable inverted front forks and adjustable monoshock at the rear.

Completing the adventure looks is a pair of wire-spoked wheels shod with dual-purpose tires.

Other notable features include:

  • LED lighting
  • adjustable windshield
  • full-colour TFT instrument display
  • crash guard
  • radiator guard

The Mitt 530TT Adventure will be available in Europe by 2023 and is priced at EUR 7,905 (RM37.1k).

As someone who previously owned the 2016 Aprilia Shiver 750, the motorcycle was considered the most affordable Italian steed you can own in Malaysia.

However, Aprilia decided to close the book on the motorcycle after the subdued introduction of the 900cc model back in 2019.

The Shiver 900 could not replicate the success of the 750; moreover, the price tag of a whooping RM72k (in Malaysia) was not helpful since Aprilia Malaysia sold the CKD’s 750 for half the price a few years earlier.

Nevertheless, for those still ‘longing’ for the Shiver 900, worry not as Aprilia has decided to revive the motorcycle under a new name.

The Aprilia Shiver 900 will continue to live on but with a different badge, namely Gilera.

While there is yet an official announcement from Gilera’s parent company, Piaggio, the Gilera-born Shiver 900, was recently seen in China.

Despite clad in camouflage, the motorcycle is undoubtedly a Shiver 900. However, the front headlamp and TFT screen, which previously showcased the Aprilia badge, is now replaced with the Gilera name.

Thanks to Piaggio Group’s recent partnership with Zongshen, the China-based company will manufacture Shiver and Dorsoduro 900.

However, the latest reports do not confirm if Gilera’s revival will be a global effort; instead, the reborn Shiver and Dorsoduro could be sold in China only.

Nevertheless, looking at how interesting the recent developments between Piaggio and their Chinese counterpart are, the future looks great for Gilera.

Famed Italian brand Gilera might return through Piaggio Group’s partnership with Chinese giant Zongshen.

penghadang angin tinggi
tempat duduk jenis single-piece
tangki 14L
rim 17-inci

The collaboration between Piaggio and Zongshen has proven fruitful in China.

Zongshen is currently Piaggio biggest motorcycle partner in China and has since helped the Italian brand expansion in Asia by assembling the company motorcycle range including Aprilia.

In the latest report by Chinese publication Mega China Motor, Piaggio and Zongshen have worked together in developing a new 150cc scooter engine that could soon make its way to Asia and Europe.

The new powerplant is designated the G150S and makes 15hp and 14.9Nm.

Interestingly, the G150S is compatible with a host of modern features including keyless starts, silent start and idling stop, similar to the one available on the Yamaha NMax and Honda Vario.

The new motor is likely to be introduced in upcoming scooters scheduled for launch in 2022.

– CycleWorld
