Yamaha Ténéré

Yamaha Europe has just announced the release of a new version of their popular adventure tourer motorcycle – the Yamaha Tenere 700 Extreme Edition.

  • The Tenere 700 Extreme Edition is heavily inspired by the Tenere 700 World Raid.
  • Powering the Tenere 700 Exterem Edition is the same 689cc liquid-cooled, inline twin-cylinder engine.

The new variant of the motorcycle is more off-road-ready than its predecessor, with changes to the chassis and suspension, among other features.

While the Yamaha Tenere 700 Extreme Edition shares many mechanical components with the previous model, updates to the chassis and suspension have been made to improve off-road capabilities.

The motorcycle now has fully adjustable KYB 43mm forks that provide an additional 20mm of travel, bringing the total to 230mm at the front. The rear shock has also been upgraded, with a 20mm increase in travel bringing it to 220mm.

Additionally, the overall height of the bike has been raised by 20mm to provide a total ground clearance of 260mm.

Other new features of the Yamaha Tenere 700 Extreme Edition include adjustable off-road titanium footpegs with bear trap grips, a high enduro-style mudguard, a radiator protector, and a single, enduro-style seat with 20mm more padding than the standard version.

However, the changes to the suspension and seat height bring the seat height to a towering 910mm.

That said, the Yamaha Tenere 700 Extreme Edition takes inspiration from the Yamaha World Raid model while adding its own accessories.

After months of leaks, patents and prototype photos, Yamaha has officially ready to take on the world with the new 2022 Tenere 700 World Raid.

First seen as a Tenere 700 Raid Prototype at EICMA last year, the Japanese later showcased the production-ready version back in January in the form of design leaks.

However, the finished version looks so much more spectacular, given it looks like something that just came off the recently concluded Dakar Rally.

While the World Raid shares the same front headlamp and a rear tail unit like the base Tenere 700, the new variants gained a bigger and more muscular fuel tank thanks to a twin-tank setup.

The twin-tank hangs on either side of the frame and engine, fed by side-by-side filler caps and fits the look of a Dakar Rally inspired machine.

Moreover, the twin-tank can carry 23liters of fuel, that’s 7liters more than the standard Tenere 700 and can take the bike up to 480 km of range.

Despite the twin-tank setup creating a more extensive front end, it also helps to fit in the motocross-style saddle, allowing riders to shift accordingly while riding off-road.

The new seat sits 890mm off the ground (12mm higher than the stock Tenere 700) to provide better clearance.

Other significant updates include:

  • new 5-inch TFT full-colour display (portrait orientation)
  •  USB socket
  • three-mode ABS
  • 43mm KYB fork with 228mm travel (adjustable preload, compression and rebound)
  • rear aluminium piggyback shock (adjustable preload, compression and rebound)
  • taller front screen
  • new detachable side-deflectors
  • under-engine aluminium bash plate

Despite the bigger and taller setup, the Tenere 700 World Raid runs on the same 689cc parallel-twin CP2 engine.

According to Yamaha, the new Tenere 700 World Raid will reach a worldwide dealership in May.

  • Yamaha already has two models powered by the 300cc engine – the YZF-R3 and the MT-03.
  • Yamaha Italy has said that if there is enough demand, it will produce an adventure variant powered by the same 300cc engine.
  • The Yamaha Tenere 300 is likely to be produced but unlikely to be introduced in Malaysia.

Downsizing and efficiency among motorcycle makers is all the rage these days – after decades of upsizing in terms of weight and engine displacement.

Perhaps it is safe to say that KTM was the one that started this with the 200, 250 and 390. But there is news that Yamaha is about to jump on the bandwagon with a new Tenere 300.

This makes sense considering that the Tenere itself has proven to be such a capable bike, and the Asian region is booming in terms of motorcycle sales and has been longing for capable bikes with smaller capacity.

How did this news about a Tenere 300 come about though? Apparently an Italian motorcycle publication called Motociclismo had interviewed the Product Communications Manager for Yamaha Italy, Fabrizio Corsi, during the Yamaha MT-03 test ride.

The journalist involved in the test ride had asked about the possibility of Yamaha coming up with a Tenere 300 and Corsi pointed out that the BMW G310GS and KTM 390 Adventure has received a lot of attention.

And if there is enough demand for a small capacity Yamaha adventure bike, then yes, Yamaha will come up with something.

Though it all sound nice and interesting, especially considering that there are already two models utilising the 300cc engine – the YZF-R3 (above) and the MT-03 – an adventure variant will make a lot of sense.

And it is unlikely that Yamaha will give up on the chance to make life difficult for Kawasaki’s Versys-X 300 as well as BMW and KTM.

But before we get too excited, the chances of a Yamaha Tenere 300 making it to the Malaysian market are slim – simply because of the way our motorcycle licensing structure is set up.

The B2 license, which is what most motorcyclist have, limits the owner to 250cc bikes and below. To trade up to a full-B license will cost quite a bit of money for most people and is extremely time consuming.

Hence why most people tend to stick to small capacity bikes, and it is also why we have not yet seen the new Kawasaki Versys-X 300 even though it has been a few years since its global introduction.

So yes, the Yamaha Tenere 300 sounds like a lot of fun, but it is unlike to be offered here. At least not officially.

Fret not though, for hardcore fans of the Big Blue there is the Yamaha Tenere 250 – but that too is not offered officially by Yamaha Malaysia.

If you’re in the market for one of the coolest looking adventure bikes around, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 should be high up on your list. Designed to take on any terrain, it’s also one hell of a good-looking bike and the iF Design Award team seems to agree as they handed out one of their coveted awards to the beautiful machine.
