yamaha mt-03

The Yamaha MT range has been doing well since its introduction back in 2005, and since then, the naked bike family has grown to become one of the most famous street bikes from Yamaha.

  • 2022 Yamaha MT-03 features new Dark Blast edition.
  • Equipped with the same 321cc parallel-twin engine that pumps out  37.1hp and 28Nm.

While the nameplate “Master of Torque” (MT) is best represented by the MT-07 and MT-09 motorcycles, the smaller variants, including the MT-03 (MT-25 in Malaysia) are also popular, especially in Asian countries.

That said, Yamaha has unveiled the MT-03 with a new Dark Blast edition in Thailand that features new colour schemes.

The 2022 unit comes in two new colourway, the first  features a grey bodywork with cyan-coloured wheels while the second gets an all-black treatment in place of the prior blue/grey scheme.

Nonetheless, no changes are made to the engine that still carries the same 321cc parallel-twin powertrain that makes 37.1hp @ 10,590rpm and 28Nm @ 9,010rpm.

Other notable features include:

  • dual-channel ABS.
  • digital LCD instrument cluster,
  • full LED lights.

According to Yamaha, the 2022 MT-03 Dark Blast Edition retails at THB195,510 (RM23.8k).

Yamaha Brazil decided what better way to celebrate Halloween than to dress the MT-03 with an Iron Man’s suit.

The MT-03 Iron Man edition is the second superhero & sci-fi machine that made its way into the Yamaha Brazil range after the NMax scooters received a Star Wars makeover earlier this year.

Interestingly, the 2021 MT-03 projector LED headlight resembles Tony Stark Arc Reactor, thus creating complete Iron Man vibes.

However, we can confirm the projector LED headlight does not feature build-in Iron-Man Monobeam or any weapons, to be exact.

No changes is made internally as well as the special edition bike continues to run on a 321cc parallel-twin powerplant instead of an Arc Reactor.

  • Yamaha already has two models powered by the 300cc engine – the YZF-R3 and the MT-03.
  • Yamaha Italy has said that if there is enough demand, it will produce an adventure variant powered by the same 300cc engine.
  • The Yamaha Tenere 300 is likely to be produced but unlikely to be introduced in Malaysia.

Downsizing and efficiency among motorcycle makers is all the rage these days – after decades of upsizing in terms of weight and engine displacement.

Perhaps it is safe to say that KTM was the one that started this with the 200, 250 and 390. But there is news that Yamaha is about to jump on the bandwagon with a new Tenere 300.

This makes sense considering that the Tenere itself has proven to be such a capable bike, and the Asian region is booming in terms of motorcycle sales and has been longing for capable bikes with smaller capacity.

How did this news about a Tenere 300 come about though? Apparently an Italian motorcycle publication called Motociclismo had interviewed the Product Communications Manager for Yamaha Italy, Fabrizio Corsi, during the Yamaha MT-03 test ride.

The journalist involved in the test ride had asked about the possibility of Yamaha coming up with a Tenere 300 and Corsi pointed out that the BMW G310GS and KTM 390 Adventure has received a lot of attention.

And if there is enough demand for a small capacity Yamaha adventure bike, then yes, Yamaha will come up with something.

Though it all sound nice and interesting, especially considering that there are already two models utilising the 300cc engine – the YZF-R3 (above) and the MT-03 – an adventure variant will make a lot of sense.

And it is unlikely that Yamaha will give up on the chance to make life difficult for Kawasaki’s Versys-X 300 as well as BMW and KTM.

But before we get too excited, the chances of a Yamaha Tenere 300 making it to the Malaysian market are slim – simply because of the way our motorcycle licensing structure is set up.

The B2 license, which is what most motorcyclist have, limits the owner to 250cc bikes and below. To trade up to a full-B license will cost quite a bit of money for most people and is extremely time consuming.

Hence why most people tend to stick to small capacity bikes, and it is also why we have not yet seen the new Kawasaki Versys-X 300 even though it has been a few years since its global introduction.

So yes, the Yamaha Tenere 300 sounds like a lot of fun, but it is unlike to be offered here. At least not officially.

Fret not though, for hardcore fans of the Big Blue there is the Yamaha Tenere 250 – but that too is not offered officially by Yamaha Malaysia.

  • The 2020 Yamaha MT-03 has been launched for the US and UK markets.

  • It shares the same DNA as the MT-07 and MT-09.

  • Will it and the MT-15 reach Malaysia?

The 2020 Yamaha MT-03 has been launched for the US and UK markets.

As it shares the 321cc parallel-Twin engine as the Yamaha YZF-R3, it would known as the MT-25 in our market since it’ll adopt the YZF-R25’s 250cc engine.

Being a part of the MT-series the model shares the “Dark Side of Japan” DNA with its larger MT-07 and MT-09 siblings, such as the large faux air scoops. It features styling elements of the other two, plus an new and aggressive headlamp with striking LEDs.

A new 14-litre tank should see a range of up to a 300 kilometre range. There is also a new LCD screen.

But look a little closer and you can see a resemblance to YZF-R3 in terms of the tail section and frame.

Indeed, while the diamond-shape frame is from the R3, the suspension features a number of differences. The forks are now upside-down, while the new swingarm is longer and pivots closer to the centre of the bike. The rear monoshock has a stiffer springs in addition to revised preload and rebound damping rates.

The manufacturer sees the bike as a great offering to the younger segment of riders.

The big question if the MT-25 will ever be sold in Malaysia. The MT-15 and MT-25 are already sold in Thailand and Indonesia to big success.

As for the price, there has been no clear indication of that but there is word from a recent dealer conference that prices are set to begin from RM25,000 up till RM30,000 with a long list of accessories set to take those prices up higher should you wish to do so.

We know that the G310 will eventually spawn a mini sports adventure touring model similar but much smaller from the BMW GS. There will also be a full sports model similar to the RR (read about it here) and the regular naked model we see in the pictures here.

The official launch event is said to be happening sometime in March.

Once introduced, the new G310R model will take on the likes of the KTM 250 and the 390, Kawasaki Z300, the Yamaha MT-03 and others.

The G310R will be the most affordable BMW motorcycle ever, and is powered by an all-new 313cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with four valves and two overhead camshafts together with electronic fuel injection.

It outputs 34hp at 9500rpm and 28Nm of torque at 7500rpm. We had an informal introduction with the G310R in Milan late last year, you can read all about it by clicking here.
