  • KTM CEO Stefan Pierer is still adamant about buying the Ducati brand off the Volkswagen Group and has added Triumph Motorcycles to his list.

  • He wants to create a “unified European motorcycle brand.”

  • KTM is currently No. 4 and aims for No. 3.

KTM CEO Stefan Pierer is still adamant about buying the Ducati brand off Volkswagen AG and has added Triumph Motorcycles to his list.

That’s his ultimate view, but there’s a premise to the entire story.

KTM has just surpassed Harley-Davidson as the biggest motorcycle manufacturer outside Asia. The former sold 261,000 motorcycles in 2018, some 35,000 more than the Motor Company did. However, KTM only raked in USD 1.75 billion compared to Harley’s nearly USD 5 billion as the latter’s bikes were much more expensive.

Yet, KTM is still the fourth largest manufacturer in the world behind Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. Honda sold a whopping 20 million motorcycles last year, making even Yamaha’s 5.4 million look paltry.

Pierer knows that the Japanese’s volume is due to the number of different types and models available in different countries. This was the reason why KTM linked up with Bajaj to produce smaller capacity motorcycles.

But the man doesn’t want to stop there and set a target of reaching 400,000 units by 2022 globally. That target ought to demote Kawasaki as the world’s third largest motorcycle manufacturer.

In that sense, he felt that he should buy Ducati and Triumph and uniting the three brands as a triumvirate to form “a united European motorcycle company.” In saying so, he mentioned Ducati and Triumph’s 2018 sales of 53,000 and 61,500, respectively. “We’re saving ourselves in Europe,” he added. He didn’t mention that BMW Motorrad sold 165,566 units, though. Triumph’s not for sale, definitely.

Will the orange brand get there?

  • Triumph and Bajaj signed an agreement in 2017 to produce smaller capacity bikes.

  • The new model ought to appear in 2021.

  • It will be made for the Indian market and we wonder if it will reach Malaysia.

Year 2020 will be probably the most interesting time for the motorcycle industry as manufacturers debut their new Euro 5 compliant models. Following that, the rumour of a new model born of the Triumph-Bajaj collaboration may debut not in 2020 but a year after.

Triumph and Bajaj signed a letter of intent back in August 2017 to develop and manufacture a sub-400cc to 600cc bike for the Indian market. In the deal, Triumph will design and develop the bike. Bajaj, on the other hand, will manufacture and sell it through their vast distribution and sales network.

However, the plan seemed to have been delayed in January this year as Bajaj wanted to focus on Husqvarna first.

Anyhow, Triumph have submitted the designs to Bajaj and the latter have already started mechanical development by the R&D team.

We spoke to Mr. Paul Stroud, Chief Commercial Officer of Triumph Motorcycles in February 2018 about the collaboration. More specifically, we asked if the new bike will be available in other markets besides India. Mr. Stroud commented that Triumph will survey other markets for the bike’s feasibility before making a further decision.

A “lightweight” Triumph will give Royal Enfield a run for its money. It may also offer the opportunity for riders who seek to enter the Triumph brand’s lifestyle but could not afford the dearer models, yet.

  • The Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE and Ernie Vigil finished fifth overall at the Mexican 1000 rally.

  • The bike was stock apart from the necessary rally items such as headlamps, engine protection bars and seat.

  • Triumph and Vigil went up against dedicated 450cc rally raiders.

Remember Triumph Motorcycles entering the Mexican 1000 rally with the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE with Ernie Vigil Riding? They have just notched up an amazing result on a stock bike!

Triumph and Vigil had wanted to enter the “Real Deal” (nickname for the Scrambler 1200) in the Baja 1000 rally. The manufacturer was eager to show that they have a realscrambler over the other scramblers.  However, they were forced to rescind the plan when the former was injured before the race.

The next best thing to do as entering in the Mexican 1000. The rally is a 1,307-mile (1659.2 kilometres), 5-day event where the competitors use the same route as the Baja 1000.

Triumph and Vigil finished fifth overal against dedicated 450cc dirt-bikes that were further “enhanced” for the event. Remember, the Scrambler 1200 XE was stock except for the necessary rally equipment such as engine crash bars, lights and seat. Also bear in mind that the Scrambler 1200 weighed in at 205 kg dry, while the Honda CRF450R race bike weighed only 112kg wet!

The bike suffered no mechanical failures, but an unfortunate failure with the Michelin BIB Mousse tyre filler. The filler is used to seal punctures during off-road riding. Luckily for team, their support vehicle wasn’t far behind to render assistance. Bike and rider were on their way after a tyre swap. They would’ve finished even higher up the order if not for the unfortunate occurrence.

While fifth wasn’t an outright victory, it is a victory in terms of technical excellence for a bike which is stock. It just goes to show that Triumph’s done the right thing in building the Scrambler 1200.

  • The new Triumph Rocket III TFC has been officially unveiled.

  • The engine is now 2500cc, producing 167hp and 221Nm.

  • Its electronics, chassis and suspension are also upgraded.

After teasing us earlier this year, besides the launch of the Thruxton R TFC, the Triumph Rocket III TFC has been officially unveiled.

Besides wearing the TFC (Triumph Factory Custom) badge, the Rocket III also claims the record as the biggest volume-production engine. Triumph upped the capacity from 2282cc to a whopping 2458cc. Thus, the new powerplant produces 167 hp and get this: 221 Nm of torque! If you’ve never pitied the rear tyre, now’s the time to do so.

However, it wasn’t just the extra cubes that contributed to the extra ponies. The manufacturer also reworked the head and gave it titanium valves. The carbon-tipped Arrow silencers also helped.

Reining in that massive power is a new electronic suite consisting of lean-angle sensitive traction control and ABS, in addition to four ride modes. Oh, there’s also a quickshifter with auto-blipper.

Other electronics include hill hold control, cruise control, keyless ignition and tyre pressure monitoring. The full-colour TFT display/instrument panel is the latest which appeared on the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE. As such, it ought to include integration with not only your phone but also your GoPro camera.

The chassis and suspension have also been upgraded. At the front are 41mm cartridge Showa forks and a rear shock with piggyback reservoir. The front brakes consist of Brembo Stylema calipers, just like those on the Panigale V4 range.

The updates have turned the Rocket III into a serious power-cruiser to challenge the Ducati Diavel and Harley-Davidson V-Rod. Gone is the sedate-looking “old man’s cruiser” with a big engine.

Before we forget, Triumph will only build 750 units of the Rocket III, priced at £22,000 each.

But will there be a regular, non-TFC new Rocket III? We’d like to think so!

  • The Berluti Triumph Bonneville sees a good example of fashion and motorcycling.

  • Berluti is a sub-brand of Louis Vuitton.

  • The bodywork is carbon fibre and engine stock.

You know, there are many reasons why we love motorcycles; among them is the ability to individualize them to whichever philosophy one chooses. Case in point is this Berluti Triumph Bonneville which wouldn’t be out of place on a fashion catwalk.

It’s not new for fashion houses to get involved with motorcycling, of course. Some produce clothing with riding gear styles, some commission entire motorcycle builts. For example, Chanel recently teamed up with Pharrell Williams and Veldt to create some truly funky helmets.

This bike, on the other hand, was commissioned by Maison Berluti, a sub-brand of infamous Louis Vuitton (LV). The bike is part of the “Berluti Beach” collection which includes a Porsche 911 Targa, gym weight kit, and soccer ball.

As you can see from the pictures, the stock bodywork has been replaced with a curvy one, made from a single piece of carbon fibre. Since Berluti is a leather specialist, the seat is topped off with a specialty “Vitello Fiore” brown hide.

The 1200cc, liquid-cooled T120 engine is left stock.

The bike will be auctioned at Sotheby’s along with a pair of matching leather boots and leather-wrapped helmet.

  • Flat-track racers or inspired customs are unmistakable like this Triumph Bonneville Super Hooligan flat-tracker.

  • This one was modified for the Super Hooligan class racing.

  • Art Hartman, the racer who build this bike finds the Bonnie lighter and nimbler.

Flat-track racing may not be popular due to lack of visibility here in Malaysia, but no one could ever forget the experience of watching one of the races. The bikes that race in the series are also unmistakable, such as this Triumph Bonneville Super Hooligan flat-tracker.

If we behold sportbikes are about technology and unobtanium components, we ought to admire flat-track racers for their purity. That purity of form is for one thing – blasting sideways around a dirt oval track at 200 km/h.

Sure, there were other builts that take the form of flat-trackers, including a built kit in the Harley catalogue, but this Triumph looks prettier!

This Triumph Bonneville Flat-Tracker for the Super Hooligan class that you see here was built by racer Paul Hartman.

He had destroyed his Harley-Davidson racebike in a hill climb event and need to build a new Super-Hooligan spec bike. The regulations call for a stock frame and engine of 750cc and up.

Instead of redoing another Harley Sportster, Hartman chose the Triumph Bonneville. He explained that while Harleys are the chosen Super Hooligan racer, it is heavy and has a long wheelbase. However, he found the perfect bike in the Bonnie, since it weighs only 204 kg and the wheelbase is 51 mm shorter than the Sportster’s.

Hartman went to work with a 2006 Bonneville T100, leaving only the ECU and two other parts factory stock, while the rest are race-spec components. There is a lightweight Antigravity lithium battery to save weight. The exhaust is an S&S flat-track unit, intake air is handled by a K&N filter. The anodized black wheels are sourced from Performance Machine. The tanks and seat unit are painted blue to contrast with the black parts, to a stunning result.

Would you turn you Bonnie into something like this? We know we would.

  • Ernie Vigil will now race the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE at the NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally.

  • He was injured before the Baja 1000 Rally and the program was shelved.

  • The Triumph Scrambler 1200 line-up is the most off-road capable among all scramblers.

Ernie Vigil is back and will race a Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE at the NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally.

Triumph announced their plans to return the Baja 1000 Rally following the launch of the Scrambler 1200 XE and XC as they were keen to show that the Scrambler 1200 line-up is the most off-road capable among all scramblers. This was why it is dubbed the “Real Deal”.

Additionally, the rally is a homecoming of sorts for the manufacturer as Steve McQueen and Bud Ekins won there numerous times on the TR6 Trophy.

However, an injury befell rider Ernie Vigil (who’s also Triumph’s stunt rider) and the plans were shelved.

But Vigil has now fully recovered and the program is back online. He has since trained on the Scrambler 1200 for more than 9,000 kilometres in off-road conditions.

The Scrambler 1200 XE that vigil rides will be mostly stock. The only additions are to make the bike safe for desert rallying such as a desert racing seat, lights, grips and extreme profile sand tyres. The suspension, engine, electronics are all stock.

While the NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally doesn’t sound as glamorous as the Baja 1000 Rally, it actually uses the same route as the Baja Rally in Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. As the name suggests, it covers 1,000 miles (1600 kilometres) through the desert strewn with deep sand, rocks and quicksand.
