  • The range consists of SX-F motocross and EXC enduro models.

  • The bikes are priced from RM 38,500 and up.

KTM Malaysia has announced and presented their 2019 Off-road range.

After revolutionizing the off-road motorcycle scene with in 2016, KTM is back with a more powerful, stronger, lighter, nimbler and innovative 2019 line-up to raise the bar even higher.

2019 KTM SX and SX-F RANGE

2019 KTM 250 SX-F

At the hearts of the new motocross- and supercross-ready SX and SX-F ranges are the potent two-stroke and four-stroke engines derived from the already powerful 2017 model. However, KTM did not just concentrate on the engines, instead almost every aspect of the new bikes was revised to delivery packages that simply walks away from the competition.

  • The two-stroke engines in the 125 SX, 150 SX and 250 SX are all equipped with new cylinders, that incorporate new power valves. The power valve combines seamlessly with the lateral exhaust port mechanism to deliver a seamless powerband throughout the engine’s RPM range.
  • The 125 SX, 150 SX, 250 SX-F and 350 SX-F receive a new diaphragm steel (DS) clutch which was developed specifically for off-road riding. Instead of traditional coil springs, a steel plate forms a diaphragm spring. KTM claims the DS is more reliable and requires less effort at the lever.

  • The clutch basket is one-piece with perforations on the back to reduce weight. Apart from that, the primary gear made from high-strength steel billet to ensure bulletproof reliability. The friction discs are extremely heat-resistant and pre-tensioned by the diaphragm spring.
  • These changes reduced weight by 190g over normal clutch.

  • Reliable and Gearbox made by drivetrain specialists Pankl.
  • The class-ruling 450 SX-F’s engine, on the other hand, receives a new SOHC (single overhead camshaft) cylinder head that is 15mm lower, more compact and 500g lighter. Rigid rocker arms activate four lightweight titanium valves. The intake rocker arms are coated with DLC (diamond-like coating) material. The chain guides are also now low friction items. Together, these improvements yield an impressive 11,500 RPM peak engine speed.

  • A new Keihin EMS (Engine Management System) with 44mm throttle delivers fuel to the uniquely-placed fuel injector. This set up promotes optimal atomization of the fuel/air mixture for quicker combustion and enhancing throttle response as well as power delivery.
  • A new frame is also to enhance handling. The new frame consists of hydroformed chromium molybdenum steel tubes that are precision welded by robots. It is tuned for specific flex characteristics to enhance handling, high-speed stability and comfort. It now has a 40mm longer subframe to provide rearward stability to the rider.

  • Riders and pundits alike swooned over the WP AER forks on the previous bike but they have been improved even further to feature new damping settings. Furthermore, the forks are now clamped in new CNC machined triple clamps that has a stiffer top clamp to mate perfectly to the characteristics of the new frame.
  • A new 5mm longer swingarm for better straightline stability.

  • A new CFD (computational fluid dynamics) designed cooling system has also been developed for the 2019 SX models. There are also new protectors to brace against impact and flying debris around the radiators. The radiators have lower centre of gravity.
  • The seat’s ergonomics has also been revised with silicone strips for more grip (previously available on PowerParts seat only) to provide easy movement for the rider.

  • Lithium-ion battery for improved starting, lower-weight and long-lasting lifespan.
  • New fuel pump routing for optimised internal routing.
  • The benchmarks for performance, playful handling, lowest weight of 100kg were achieved.

2019 KTM XC-W, EXC, EXC-F and EXC-F SIX DAYS RANGE

2019 KTM 300 EXC-F Six Days Edition

KTM offers no less than seven models in this range for enduro racers and trail riders alike, from the lightweight 125 XC-W to the ground-breaking 300 EXC TPI two-stroke, from the agile 250 EXC-F to the extremely powerful 500 EXC-F; besides the Six Days Edition consisting of the 250 EXC TPI Six, 250 EXC-F and 450 EXC-F.

  • KTM rewrote the rules when the 250 EXC TPI and 300 EXC TPI two-strokes were introduced. The TPI (Transfer Port Induction) engine has its fuel injected directly into the transfer ports via a pair of injectors. Lubricating oil (2T) is not pre-mixed but pumped with air through the crankcase.
  • Premix (2T) supply regulated electronically regulated and supplied by an oil pump.

  • As two-strokes are sensitive to differences in air pressure and temperature, fuel and premix supply are compensated for automatically by the ECU.
  • KTM’s TPI engines are not only more powerful than their peers due to the technology but also less polluting than traditional two-strokes.

  • The 450 EXC-F and 500 EXC-F engines, on the other hand, are fuel-injected, and with single overhead camshaft. The engine is the most compact 450/500cc engine on the market, yet they produce a mountain of controllable torque.
  • All 2019 KTM enduro range are fitted with fully-adjustable WP suspension that was specifically developed for enduro riding and competition. The forks are the excellent WP XPLOR 48 upside-down units while the rear is a WP XPLOR PDS shock. They are tuned for damping excellence besides higher sensitivity and bottoming resistance.

  • KTM now offers Optional Traction Control for the EXC-F range which can be activated on-the-fly. The package is included on all Six Days models.
  • All 2019 enduro line-up will feature new, bolder graphics as a statement to KTM’s READY TO RACE spirit.

KTM Malaysia is bring in only select models from the 2019 Off-road Range. They are priced at (RM):

  • 250 SX-F priced from RM 38,500.00

  • KTM is updating and introducing new models to most of their line-up.

  • Next on the list being updated is the 1050/1090 Adventure.

  • The new bike may get a boost to 1150cc besides other technological updates.

When KTM released the 1050 Adventure, it was intended to introduce newcomers to KTM’s world of adventure motorcycles. The biggest complained however was “not powerful” enough as it made “only” 95 bhp. KTM responded by offering the 1090 Adventure which produced 123 bhp.

KTM 1050 Adventure Travel Pack – Ready to Travel

However, the 1090 Adventure is essentially a tuned-up 1050 Adventure as they both share the same capacity. Besides that, the 1050/1090 design is getting a little long in the tooth. Factor in the upcoming 790 Adventure and you have a bike (the 1050/1090) that seems redundant, if not obsolete.

Lastly, KTM does not have a model which bridges the gap between the 1050/1090 Adventure and 1290 Super Adventure models.

With all this in mind, it is of no surprise that the Austrian behemoth seem to be testing a 1150cc-engined 1090 Adventure, reported MCN.

Sources close to MCN also reported that the upcoming bike should very well receive new electronic features to bring it up-to-date such as TFT display, lean-sensitive traction control and Cornering ABS, and perhaps a quick shifter.

The increase in capacity will equal an increase in power, naturally. It is speculated that it will be in the 130 bhp range or thereabouts.

Also, judging from the spy photograph, the new 1090 Adventure may also receive a fresh look similar to the 1290 Super Adventure for family resemblance.

The new bike should appear in 2019 for the 2020 model year, again, in time for the new Euro 5 emissions standard.

  • A lucky draw was among the many activities held that day.

  • The lucky winner had picked up her Grand Prize, a 390 Duke at KTM Malaysia’s Lifestyle Showroom.

The recent KTM Malaysia Orange Carnival held on 28th July 2018 was a great success, despite overlapping with many other motorcycle events in West Malaysia.

The one-day event organized at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru, attracted thousands of attendees consisting of KTM owners, bikers of every brand and families.

KTM Malaysia Orange Carnival Begins in Johor on 28th July

Activities included test rides of KTM’s latest motorcycles, a Fun-Hana competition, service campaign, stunt shows, promotions and lucky draw. Besides those, the 2018 200 Duke Evo S was also launched during the carnival.

As for the lucky draw, KTM Malaysia offered a brand new KTM 390 Duke as the grand prize. This new model boasts the most powerful engine as well as being the best equipped in the sub-400cc category with a 5” TFT screen, WP upside-down forks and shock, radially-mounted 4-piston caliper.

The lucky winner was picked out during the carnival and the prize was handed over on 10th August 2018 at KTM Malaysia’s Lifestyle Centre in Kota Damansara.

Winner, Ms. Hayatun Nufus Binti Hoddri was present with her husband, Mr. Mohd. Firdaus Bin Ithnin.

“I couldn’t be happier, Alhamdulillah,” beams Hayatun, “I had just followed my husband to the Orange Carnival to look see, as he wanted to test out the new bikes and never expected to win the Grand Prize!”

Mohd. Firdaus reflected his wife’s joy, “It was the same for me. I still couldn’t believe it. I went to the carnival because I’ve always wanted to test the 1290 Super Duke R. I prefer naked motorcycles, KTM’s in particular, over the Yamaha YZF-R1 that I currently own.”

Will Hayatun be an addition to KTM Malaysia’s Dukers community? “Although we’ve travelled to many places on our current motorcycle, I can’t ride,” she admitted, “Although, I would love to learn to do so in the future, with my husband’s permission.”

The couple rode the new bike all the way back to Johor Bahru after the handover ceremony.

The Orange Carnival is slated to be held throughout the country, so stay tuned for the  next date!

  • It attracted 101 entries, divided into 7 categories.

  • This round also added the Dual-Purpose and Women’s Categories.

Round 2 of the KTM Malaysia Orange Enduro 2018 saw even greater participation than Round 1 held in Sungai Petani, Kedah in April.

KTM Malaysia Orange Enduro 2018 Round 1

101 participants accepted the challenge to put their skills on the line in going up against fellow competitors in this all-make event.

Participants and their teams had started setting up their pit area and motorcycles from as early as 7am, accompanied by a constant stream of registrations right up to the start of proceedings. Race series sponsors such as Gracshaw and Shizens (facial care products, whom Gabit is the Brand Ambassador) had also set up their wares for display and branding.

KTM Malaysia’s Sungai Buaya track layout had been altered to provide an even greater challenge to the riders eliminate advantage through familiarity. KTM Malaysia’s factory rider Gabit Saleh and trials rider Acoi Pangkolo has worked throughout the week and night before the event to ready the track. The former laid out the enduro zones such as hill climbs, jungle tracks, whoops and jumps while the latter prepared the obstacle zone complete with large tyres and log crossings. The lap distance had been expanded to approximately 6-km long.

A safety briefing was carried out before the start of the race and competitors had their bikes fitted with transponders to accurately log their times.

The weather was hot and dusty throughout the day.

ED5 – CubCross Open

Proceedings got under way with the “smallest” class. As the name implies, these motorcycles started out as underbones, better known as kapchais, and were modified to carry longer travel suspension and among other things for off-road duties.

Being “Open” means a competitor could bring any Cubcross bike regardless of engine capacity or type.

Ahmad Kamarul Munir (#50) took the holeshot at the start and left everyone in the dust with a comfortable lead at the fall of the chequered flag. Hafizi Bin Usman (#78) crossed the line in second, while Ahmad Jafri Bin Razali (#22) completed the podium.

A total of 13 riders took part in this category.

ED4 – CKD Open

This class is meant for locally-assembled dirtbikes. As such, it was inundated with Kawasaki KLX150 and KLX250s. 23 participants took to the starting grid and they were given 30 minutes to complete as many laps as possible.

There was a fight for the lead began from the start. Besides that, the action soon got very entertaining for the crowd as the riders started making mistakes after mistakes. The logs proved especially troublesome for the 150s due to their low ground clearance.

Muhamad Amirul Bin Ramli (#42) pipped Muhammad Faiz Zulhilmi Bin Fasli (#94) by just 0.7 seconds at the finish line.

while Ahmad Kamarul Munir crossed the line less than 0.5 second behind the no. 2 placed man.

ED3 – Veteran Open

Action continue afterwards with the Veteran Open category, which is open to riders above 40 years old. The class saw a total of 18 riders. They were allocated 30 minutes plus 1 lap.

Asdin Udin led from start to finish, taking the checkered flag almost 2 minutes ahead of Richard Lim and 3 minutes from Mohd. Sanusi Bin Mohd. Yaman.

ED6 – D-P Rally

The D-P Rally (dual-purpose rally) is a new addition to the KTM Malaysia Orange Enduro 2018 series and is open to adventure motorcycles 650cc and above, attracting 11 entries.

Most of the participants had just completed the GIVI Rimba Raid Mat Daling jungle rally last weekend.

Ahmad Daniel Haiqal made a lightning start and rode with his trademark aggression ahead of Wong Chun Hing (better known as Bee Wong).

But Bee ran into a hole too hard and overstretched his chain, causing to slip repeatedly off the rear sprocket. He had no choice but to stop his KTM 1190 Adventure for repairs while other competitors passed him.

Ahmad Daniel Haiqal kept pushing hard on his Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro but a mistake relinquished his lead to Shamsul Azhar Abu Hazim (Acoi Pangkolo). The latter started riding harder after that point to open up a healthy gap all the way to the finish.

Bee then pushed hard to repass the field, save for Shamsul and Haiqal to finish third.

ED2 – KTM Open

This category is open to KTM dirtbikes only.

Ahmad Daniel Haiqal also participated and went on to win some 45 seconds ahead of Lai Wai Seng and 3 minutes ahead of Muhd Hazim to capture the second podium of the day.

With 24 entries, this class is an indication of the number of KTM dirtbikes in circulation.

However, the hot and dusty conditions took its toll on many riders; there were 8 non-finishers.

ED7 – Women Enduro

As with the D-P class, the Women Enduro category is a new addition to the KTM Malaysia Orange Enduro 2018. The category is directly sponsored by Malaysian comedian and celebrity, Achey Bochey, who is an enduro rider himself.

There were just two registrations in the morning but the number of participants increased to 9 by the start of the race.

These ladies could not only ride but race too. The trio of Nur Haziyah Bt. Ramli, Nor Hasinah Mohamed and Siti Noor Safira Binti Mustafa were locked in a battle from early on, but it fizzled into a straight fight between Nur Haziyah and Nor Hasinah.

Nor Hasinah had led most of the race until she made a mistake which put here down and was passed by Nur Haziyah who romped home to take the win.

ED1 – Open Category

This is the premier category of the series, which attracts the top off-road riders in the country, including the aforementioned Ahmad Daniel Haikal, Muhammad Khairul Afif and Muhd. Habibullah Muhd. Saleh @ Gabit, among a total of 15 riders.

The action was fierce between the three in the early part of the race, before Haiqal pulled out a large lead from the rest of the field. But again, a mistake cost him dearly; to which Afif and Gabit capitalized on. However, both riders took it easy by the latter stages of the race, allowing Afif to win from Gabit by 10 seconds. Haiqal recovered to finish third, a distant 2 minutes behind.

Conclusion

The KTM Malaysia Orange Enduro has shown that off-road competition is healthy in Malaysia as the number of competitors are increasing by each round. KTM Malaysia’s decision to organize the Orange Enduro is also a positive gesture in allowing enthusiasts and pros to the opportunity to race and gauge their standards, regardless of the brand of motorcycle they are riding.

In fact, other manufacturers do not even organize their own off-road events on such a scale, despite the level of enthusiasm displayed at the Orange Enduro, including the dual-purpose and women’s categories. Look at how many participants signed up for the GIVI Rimba Raid Mat Daling the week prior.

There was also a huge turnout of spectators, which easily outnumbered the participants by 2:1.

It’s time for other manufacturers to step up to the plate.
