  • Indian Motorcycles have released their 2019 Scout line-up.

  • The updates include paint options and accessories.

Indian Motorcycles have announced their updated best-selling Indian Scout range for 2019.

First and foremost, ABS (anti-lock braking system) is available for every model apart from the black Scout Sixty, Scout and Scout Bobber. Buyers of the Thunder Black colour version may opt for ABS or non-ABS. The Scout and Scout Bobber will also feature a USB charging port, located next to the speedometer for easy access to smart devices or GPS.

If already own the current version of the Scout, fret not, as Indian Motorcycles provides the USB Charging Port Kit which could be retrofitted to the 2015 to 2018 Scout or Scout Bobber and 2016 – 2019 Scout Sixty.

The 100-bhp, 69 cubic inch (1130cc), liquid-cooled V-Twin will now equip the Scout in Thunder Black, Deep Water Metallic, Metallic Jade, Indian Motorcycle Red over Thunder Black, and Willow Green over Ivory Cream colour options.

The 60 cubic inch (983cc), liquid-cooled V-Twin is blacked-out and will equip the Scout Sixty in Thunder Black, White Smoke, Ruby Metallic and Star Silver of Thunderblack colours.

Indian Motorcycles also offers a comprehensive accessories line-up. In the Scout touring accessories side, there are bags, passenger seats, windscreens. For upgrading the Scout’s performance, there are Fox Shocks, Stage 1 slip-on exhaust and air intake. There are also accessories to customize the Scout to reflect the rider’s personality such as seats, handlebars, foot controls and so forth.

The 2019 Indian Scouts will be released first in the US before making their way to the rest of the world.

Polaris axed its Victory brand in January this year in order to fully concentrate on its Indian Motorcycles concern, and the move has started to see positive results. It has been reported that Indian’s sales grew by 17% while Harley’s shrank by 7% in the past spring alone. Production has surged to more than 25,000 units at the time this article went live.

Indian Motorcycle’s 2018 lineup consists of 16 models, with 4 added to last year’s. Indian has added new features and new colours to several models.

2018 INDIAN SCOUT

There are three Scout versions, all sharing the same physical and mechanical features, except for engines and corresponding transmissions.

Indian Scout Sixty

The Scout Sixty is identical to the 2017 model, with the addition of two new colours and ABS corresponding to certain colours. Thunder Black and Polished Bronze are without ABS, while ABS is standard for Indian Motorcycle Red and Thunder Black over Titanium Metallic.

The Scout Sixty uses the 61 cubic-inch (999 cc) engine which produces 78 bhp, mated to a five-speed transmission.

Indian Scout

The Indian Scout received overwhelming response and was quickly sold out in Malaysia. For 2018, the Scout’s forks are upgraded to cartridge forks, Pirelli tyres are fitted and best of all, a leather pillion seat.

The Scout uses the 69 cubic-inch (1133 cc) engine which punches out 100 bhp, sent through a six-speed transmission.

Thunder Black and Metallic Jade colours are without ABS; Willow Green over Ivory Cream, Brilliant Blue over White, and Burgundy Red are with ABS.

Indian Scout Bobber

New for 2018, the Scout Bobber is styled as blacked-out and stripped down. The footpegs were moved moved back for a more cruiser style placement. The handlebars have been replaced with tracker style bars. The blacked out wheels are shod with knobby tyres and the suspension lowered by 25mm.

Indian’s cruisers are distinguished from their bagger brethren by not having luggage fitted as standard.

Indian Chief Dark Horse

The Dark Horse comes only in matte black with blacked out detailing, accented by chrome. The valanced front and rear fenders are standard, of course. The Chief’s keyless ignition remains.

The standard Chief comes in Steel Gray, has more chrome and cruise control compared to the Dark Horse.

Indian Chief Classic

The Chief Classic is distinguishable by the white walled tyres, spoked wheels and chrome hand controls. Plus chrome and more chrome.

2018 INDIAN BAGGERS

Baggers are motorcycles with baggage, whether saddlebags or hard panniers, and Indian’s lineup has more baggers than any other manufacturer’s.

Indian Chief Vintage

The Chief Vintage has standard leather seats, saddlebags and removable windshield. To complete the classic look, Indian gave the Chief Vintage whitewall tyres and spoked wheels. Removing the windshielf and saddlebags turn the bike into a boulevard cruiser.

Indian Springfield

Basically unchanged from 2017, there are new colours for 2018. Features such as the detachable hard panniers, detachable windshield, highway bar, keyless ignition, tyre pressure monitoring system and ABS remain standard.

Indian Springfield Dark Horse

The Dark Horse version is new for 2018, featuring matte black paint with gloss black detailing. Instead of the standard Springfield’s valanced front fender, the Dark Horse uses an open fender over a 19-inch cast wheel. It also includes a detachable windshield and hard panniers.

Indian Chieftain

The front end of the Chieftain has been replaced by the new open fender and 19-inch cast wheels. The windshield is powered and include driving lights. Other features include ABS, cruise control, keyless ignition, highway bar, hard panniers, and 7-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB input.

Indian Chieftain Dark Horse

The 2018 Chieftain Dark Horse comes with the fully loaded Ride Command infotainment system which includes GPS. The front end has also been replaced by the open fender and 19-inch wheel.

Indian Chieftain Classic

The Indian Chieftain Classic looks more traditional with the valanced fenders, 16-inch wheels and leather seat with fringes. But new for 2018 is the Ride Command infotainment system.

Indian Chieftain Limited

The Chieftain Limited is top model of the Chieftain family. The front end features a contrast cut 19-inch wheel with open fender.

2018 INDIAN TOURERS

Indian’s Roadmaster family is unmistakable, featuring saddlebags or panniers with large top cases. Best choice for long tours.

Indian Roadmaster Classic

The Roadmaster Classic is the entry point into the Indian touring family, yet it brims with all the necessary touring features such as luggage and the Ride Command infotainment system.

Indian Roadmaster

With hard panniers and top case, the Roadmaster looks more contemporary then the Roadmaster Classic. There are also hard wind deflectors ahead of the rider’s shins. The sound system is bumped up to 200 watts.

Indian Roadmaster Elite

The Roadmaster Elite is the Big Chief of Indian Motorcycle tribe.

It comes only in Cobalt Candy over Black Crystal, which is individually hand-finished in more than 30 hours. Real 23K gold leaf badging is then applied to the tank and engine components.

The Ride Command infotainment system packs a 300-watt punch. There are armrests for the passenger. The rider and passenger footboards are billet aluminium. A premium touring console tops the fuel tank.

Ask anyone about the first American cruiser that comes to mind and Indian will likely not be the first image in their heads. Though the brand is amongst the oldest in the world and one of a few with a history as colourful as Harley-Davidson, but the brand had all but disappeared off the Malaysian radar, until it re-emerged locally a few years ago thanks to importer and distributor, Naza.

Indian makes great motorcycles. They have perfected the cruiser recipe with a touch of smoothness, style and power. Take this Indian Scout for example, it was designed to take on the Harley-Davidson Sportster and others in its class, and it does a stylishly good job too. Though whether or not it does a better job than the Sportster is still debatable.

It has the right design and the right size for a bobber-ish cruiser. It also has the old school wheel size and style. And unlike some manufacturers that try too hard to take on Harley-Davidson, does not over do the chrome and bling. The latter being a really good thing, lets leave the chrome and bling to the big boys with their Road Glides and Chief Specials.

It looks about the same size as a Sportster 1200 but has a 32mm longer wheelbase, has a 83mm shorter seat, is slightly taller with 30mm more ground clearance and is 14 kg’s lighter than the 2016 Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200.

It roughly rides about the same as a Sportster 1200 does too, and this comes from a owner of a 2014 Sportster 48. It may be shorter, lighter and yadi yadi yada, but Sportster owners will feel right at home on the Scout – it is familiar territory.

The footpegs are forward set and the seat, though gorgeous to look at in all its brown leather glory, isn’t particularly comfortable and gives a sore bum after about 100km. But it scores top points in visual appeal, and truly complements the bike’s gun metal grey colour.

To steal customers away from Harley-Davidson, Indian had to make a better bike, and that almost always starts with a grand engine, and boy what a grand engine it has.

The engine is a 1,130cc, liquid cooled v-twin that gives out 100hp and 97.7Nm of torque from 5,900rpm. Though slightly smaller than the 1,202cc engine of the Harley-Davidson, the Scout has just a little more torque (H-D does not disclose horsepower figures), but because the H-D offers all of its torque from just 3,500rpm, it feels more powerful. The Scout however has a lower lean angle of 31 degrees while the H-D only does 26 degrees. Naturally the Scout feels sportier than the Sportster, which feels more like a cruiser than the Scout.

And so, the bike from Spirit Lake, though quite a nice bike to ride, did not impress me all that much though. It was too small for my size and though my 48 is about the same size, I am in love with the raw character of the Harley, and speaking of engines, keeping the Indian at a constant boiling point can be a little tiring for a cruiser, low end torque is always King.

Generally, I liked the fit and finish of the Scout as it has a mix of Americana with the quality of a Japanese bike, but at RM114,800, it is quite pricey. It will be tough making a case for the Scout at the local mamak table when everyone else asks why you would rather buy a Scout over, say, a Sportster 1200, or even a BMW RnineT. All the best justifying that.

But if you want a cruiser but not a Harley-Davidson and want some heritage to boast about during weekend rides, the Indian Scout is the bike you want. Pricey it might be, but it has all of the appeal of a Harley-Davidson plus a livelier engine if you are the type that likes to work for your pleasure. There is also lots of metal parts and bullish power.

Indian Motorcycles 2016 models were announced last week by the American manufacturer. Similar to rivals Victory, Indian Motorcycles’ 2016  model updates go only as far as cosmetics and new colours. However, all models in the range can be now equipped with EU certified accessory Remus exhaust pipes.

2016 Scout
With its compact design, low 643mm seat height and ABS as standard, the Indian Scout boasts a liquid-cooled 1133cc V-twin engine, with 100b on tap. For 2016 the Scout comes in five colours. Wildfire Red(new), Thunder Black, Thunder Black Smoke, Silver Smoke, Indian Motorcycle Red.

2016 Chief
Riders can now opt for the Chief Classic (cruiser) with its classic looks, much cleaner now following some re-work carried out for 2016: solo vinyl seat, black switches, single headlight and cast aluminium wheels. It now also only comes in one colour; Pearl White.

Next there’s the Chief Vintage (bagger) with its beautiful fringed leather saddlebags and seats, and quick-release windshield (all as standard) making this the option for those who plan to ride on extended road trips. Four colours are available with one of these being new for 2016.

The Chieftain (bagger) has a large fairing with a power-adjustable windscreen (to offer superb cruising comfort), genuine leather seats and hard saddlebags with remote central-locking. It’s available in four colours in 2016 with two of these new.

Finally there’s the Chief Dark Horse, which is matte black from end-to-end with only a few flashes of chrome (accessories are available to fully blacked it out).
