Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP

Honda has recently unveiled significant technical updates for its 2024 CBR1000RR-R SP Fireblade, enhancing its performance capabilities. However, a new patent application suggests that the company is also working on visual revisions aimed at increasing downforce while minimizing drag.

One noticeable change to the 2024 CBR1000RR-R SP is the adoption of MotoGP-inspired hoop-style winglets on the front, replacing the previous side-mounted versions. While these winglets contribute to increased front-end downforce, they also introduce additional drag compared to a cleaner fairing design.

The patent application reveals a redesigned shape that aims to strike a balance between reducing drag and maintaining downforce. The innovative design relocates the winglets closer together in the bike’s nose, utilizing a system of intakes and vents to direct air over internal surfaces within the nose.

Honda’s patent explains that by incorporating inverted wing shapes into the front cowl, downforce can be increased without the need for additional wings, ultimately reducing aerodynamic drag. The result is improved motion performance, including maximum speed and acceleration, leading to enhanced fuel consumption performance.

Key visible components of the new design include prominent intakes on each side of the screen near the handlebars and a secondary set of intakes lower down inside the concave section just below the nose’s leading edge. The internal bodywork’s shape, revealed in one drawing in the patent application, showcases an aggressively angled wing profile.

Apart from creating downforce and reducing frontal area, the design claims to offer additional aerodynamic benefits by directing airflow more efficiently over and around the rider. The patent suggests that the discharged air serves as an air curtain, reducing wind protection for the rider and minimizing the bike’s frontal size when viewed head-on, resulting in further drag reduction.

While the patent drawings feature the CBR1000RR-R SP, Honda emphasizes the adaptability of this design for various supersport-style bikes. By securing a patent for this innovative approach, Honda aims to prevent competitors from replicating the same advancements in their designs.

Honda issued an official recall concerning its flagship sportbike, the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP in America.

It turns out, the exhaust pipe on the Fireblade SP could overheat, which could lead to the oil cooler pipe melting and rupturing.

Worst case scenario, the overheated exhaust could increase the chance of a crash, injury and even fire.

As a precaution, Honda America is issuing a recall notice to 311 owners of the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP in the USA.

According to the recall documents by NHTSA, the overheat may occur when the pipe does not receive sufficient airflow, especially when the bike is following behind a vehicle or when riding in first gear and above 5,000rpm for an extended period.

The recall will allow Honda dealers to replace the oil cooler pipe and install a heat guard between the exhaust pipe and oil cooler pipe, free of charge.

The heat guard will be pre-installed on every Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP, beginning March 2022.

Meanwhile, owners who want to ride their bike to the nearest Honda dealership is advised not to ride above 5,000rpm in 1st gear.

American Honda Motor Co. has issued a recall on the 2021 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP due to a faulty installation of the rear cushion connecting plates.

The recall involved a total of 89 units of the all-new Fireblade SP.

According to documents filed, the rear cushion plates was installed incorrectly and may cause the plates to break.

An incorrectly installed plate can break, hence increases the risk of a crash.

If the plates break, the rider will suffer a sudden drop in the ride height of the motorcycle, which eventually could lead to an accident.

All 89 units of affected Fireblade SP will have to make an appointment with an authorized Honda Powersports dealer to perform inspection and replacements.

A lot of Malaysians (and other folks around the world, for that matter) love to ask the question “What’s the top speed?”. For one particular 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP, we have acquired the answer and it’s very impressive, to say the least. (more…)

  • Honda gave an exclusive preview of the 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade today.

  • The new bike is set to spearhead Honda’s challenge in production racing.

  • To rehash, it produces 215 hp and 113 Nm of torque.

Boon Siew Honda gave an exclusive preview of the 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade today. The event is in conjunction with the 8 Hours of Sepang FIM Endurance World (FIM EWC) Championship round and announcement of the Honda Asia-Dream Racing team.

Designed to spearhead Honda’s assault in the WorldSBK, Endurance World Championship, and all other race series the world over, the 2020 bike is all-new.

Honda doesn’t like getting beaten. As such, it was designed and developed hand-in-hand with the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC).

Since production racing means that the bikes must not deviate much from er… production bikes, the road bikes have to be built to incorporate whatever “race winning” technology the manufacturer can cram in.

First and foremost, it’s a great departure from the road-friendly character of the CBR900RR all the way up to the 2019 CBR1000RR. Honda had specifically made it clear that this Triple-R is “track focused.”

To retouch, the new 999cc inline-Four shares the same 81 mm x 48.5 mm bore and stroke of the RC213V-S. That’s a 5.0 mm overbore and 6.5 mm understroke compared to the 76 mm x 55 mm architecture. This was done in the interest for more top-end power, something which Honda WorldSBK and EWC riders complained about lacking in the older model.

Other changes include DLC-coated camshafts that actuate finger-followers compared to the previous shim-under-bucket set up. Honda claims that this reduces drivetrain friction by 35% and inertial weight by a whopping 75%. A timing gear on the crankshaft turns the camchain, hence camshafts in the opposite direction of the crankshaft in order to reduce inertia.

The new connecting rods are titanium, halving the weight of the old chromoly steel ones. New forged pistons are made from another type of aluminium alloy that are 5% lighter. The piston skirt is coated with Ober while the pin clip grooves are coated with nickel-phosphorous.

There are other changes as well, in fact too many to list. But all these changes and new stuff lets the engine liberate 215 hp at 14,500 RPM and 113 Nm of torque at 12,500 RPM.

Honda’s test riders are currently hard at work in adapting the bike to WorldSBK and EWC duties.

There are two models, of course – one base and the high-spec’ed SP version. No news yet of when it’ll be available in Malaysia, but we expect it to be officially launched something between May to August 2020.
