Hari Raya Aidilfitri

A spokesperson for the Malaysian Highways Authority (LLM) said traffic flow on several major highways and roads leading out of the Klang Valley was reported to be congested this evening.

It is caused by the increase in city residents returning to their hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri. At the same time, they can take advantage of free tolls on all highways which will end at 11.59 tonight.

According to the spokesman, the flow of traffic to the north is congested on the North-South Highway (PLUS) from Bukit Lanjan to Rawang, Kawasan Rehat dan Rawat (R&R) Rawang to Bukit Beruntung, Bukit Tagar to Lembah Beringin, Tapah to Gopeng, and the Menora Tunnel to Kuala Kangsar.

“Four Smart Lane lanes have been activated for the northbound route involving Rawang R&R Area to Sungai Buaya, Slim River to Sungkai, Gua Tempurung to Gopeng, and Bukit Tambun to Juru. The route will be activated until 7pm tonight,” he told Bernama.

As for the route to the south, he said, congestion was reported in Nilai to Bandar Ainsdale, Port Dickson Selatan to Pedas Linggi, and Kulai to Sedenak.

“The Smart Lane has also been activated, including Nilai to Seremban R&R Area, Ayer Keroh to Bemban Side Stop, and Kulai to Senai,” he said.

As for the route to the East Coast, he said, traffic is controlled and congestion only occurs after the Gombak Toll Plaza to the Genting Sempah Tunnel.

“Traffic is congested along 13 kilometers following the rain, in addition to the increase in vehicles and hiking trails at the location,” he said.

Ahmad Maslan menambah bahawa PLUS menjangkakan trafik harian kira-kira 2.1 juta kenderaan semasa cuti perayaan.

Malaysian motorists will enjoy two toll-free days on highways for 2 days during Hari Raya Aidilfitri. However, the government will not extend the it further.

The Deputy Works Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan explained that they will not extend it as the government has already allocated RM37.6 million to cover the exemption. The sum will be paid to the 33 highway concession companies.

“That is about RM19mil per day. This is the Cabinet’s decision and it’s final,” he said after inspecting preparations by PLUS Malaysia Bhd for Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the Persada PLUS Corporate Tower here yesterday.

On Thursday, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced that the government has approved a two-day toll-free period on April 8 and 9 for Class 1 private vehicle users on highways in conjunction with Hari Raya. The same measure was also done during the Chinese New Year in February this year.

Ahmad Maslan added that PLUS anticipates a daily traffic of approximately 2.1 million vehicles during the festive holiday. The particularly busy days are expected to be 5, 6, 9, 12, 13, and 14 April, compared with 1.82 million during regular peak days.

PLUS is set to deploy over 4,500 personnel on its highways to ensure swift response during the period.

“PLUS has 70 staff during daily peak hours at its traffic monitoring centre to monitor, gather and disseminate the latest traffic information and coordinate assistance to highway users.

“Motorists should plan their journey using the digital travel schedule available on the MyPLUS-TTA app,” said Ahmad Maslan.

No fines but it’s straight to court for red light runners, queue-cutters, and three more offences during Hari Raya Ops.

Op Selamat 15 recorded another 13 fatalities after a total of 176 on 7th June, bringing the new total to an alarming 189, in just 24 hours.

Royal Malaysia Police said that 177 fatal accidents were recorded between May 29 and June 8th. They resulted in 189 deaths.

The 15th Op Selamat was launched on May 29 in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season. The season is when scores of Malaysians return home to celebrate the festivities with their loves ones and travel around to meet other relatives and friends.

Selangor recorded the highest number of fatalities at 33, followed by Johor at 28 and Perak with 18, thus far.

A total of 241,144 summonses were issued during the period through 3,226 traffic operations by the police. Accordingly, the largest number of summonses were issued in Selangor (33,310), Johor (19,278) and Perak (18,072).

Bear (nothing to do with the sun bear) in mind that the number of accidents and fatalities here could be higher as most went by unreported. Also the number of summonses does not include those from JPJ (Road Transport Ministry) operations and from the Automated Awareness System (AWAS) speed cameras.

The operations centres on six major traffic offences. They are driving in the emergency lane, overtaking over double lines, using mobile phone without handsfree while driving, queue-jumping, speeding and running traffic lights.

Op Selamat 15 is set to end on 12th June.

To us, the number of accidents and fatalities are beyond alarming. Motorcyclists still constitute the largest number involved. The authorities had better overhaul the entire driver licensing syllabus – NOW!
