F 900 XR

BMW is set to debut an all-new motorcycle on September 7 based on latest teaser shared across various social media platform. The new adventure motorcycle, claimed to be the F 900 GS, is expected to join the ranks alongside fresh iterations of the F 800 GS and possibly, an F 900 GS Adventure.

Breaking Down the Teasers

BMW has been teasing the motorcycling community with cryptic social media posts featuring a bike shrouded in dirt, accompanied by the hashtag #spiritofgs. We took the liberty of enhancing the teaser images and were able to confirm the appearance of “F 900” behind the iconic BMW roundel.

What To Expect?

The present F 850 GS and F 750 GS models have been riding on an 853cc Twin engine. These web pages are mysteriously offline, hinting at a significant change in the pipeline. Based on our analysis, the new F 900 GS is likely to be equipped with the more robust 895cc engine found in the 2020 F 900 R and F 900 XR models. With this upgrade, BMW seems to be preparing for the stricter Euro 5+ regulations that come into effect in 2024, which include onboard diagnostics, durability testing, and noise limits.

Performance Numbers

If the F 900 GS inherits the 895cc engine, expect a state of tune better suited for off-road conditions. For context, the 2020 F 900 models boast a claimed 103hp @ 8,500 rpm and 92Nm @ 6,500 rpm. By comparison, the F 850 GS and its Adventure variant offer 94 hp @ 8,250 rpm and 92Nm @ 6,250 rpm. Given these figures, the change to a more potent engine was arguably overdue.

Future Implications

Whatever modifications the F 900 GS receives are likely to influence the F 900 R and XR models for 2025. However, the F 900 R engine will be four years old by 2024, so more comprehensive changes could also be in the works.

All eyes are now on September 7 when BMW is expected to pull the curtain on its new middleweight GS models.

You might not be familiar with the Loncin brand, but it is the firm responsible for manufacturing the engine for BMW’s C 400 X, C 400 GT, F 850 GS, F 900 R and F 900 XR.

  • Loncin to roll out Voge 900DS adventure motorcycle in November.
  • The Voge 900DS features a similar powertrain to BMW’s F 900 XR, producing close to 100hp and 92Nm.

Loncin and BMW have been working together for years now, similar to CFMOTO’s partnership with KTM.

That said, it took a while for Loncin, through its premium Voge brand, to work on its own motorcycle range using the BMW-commissioned engine.

However, things are about to change as Voge is scheduled to introduce an adventure-type motorcycle, dubbed the Voge 900DS, soon.

The Voge 900DS – presumably refers to as Dual Sport – is like to share the same parallel-twin engine as the F 900 XR. While further details regarding the powertrain remain scarce, it’s almost sure to be an 895cc parallel-twin unit.

Having said that, it is likely to produce close to 100hp and 92Nm, similar to the BMW F 900 XR.

Looking at the leak photos, the Voge 900DS looks inspired not just by the F 850 GS bodywork but also by some aspect of Triumph’s Tiger 900 range, specifically the front fascia.

Nonetheless, it looks well-built, and the slim subframe gives off an aggressive and rugged look.

While not much is disclosed regarding the new motorcycle, the Voge 900DS is expected to break cover at EICMA in November.

  • The 2020 BMW F 900 XR and 2020 BMW F 900 R were launched at EICMA 2019.

  • The engine was enlarged for more power.

  • Both models are comprehensively equipped.

BMW Motorrad dropped a surprise by launching the 2020 BMW F 900 XR and 2020 BMW F 900 R Launched at EICMA 2019, because everyone had expected the 850 versions.

The engine started out as the 853cc parallel-Twin lump from the F 850 GS but was given a 2mm increase in bore size, resulting in 893cc. The displacement bump results in 105 bhp and 92 Nm of torque, compared to 95 bhp and 92 Nm. The 270-degree crank is retained.

The power increase puts the bike in contention in the middleweight sport-touring segment.

A new frame ties the new engine as a stressed member and everything else together. A new 15-litre plastic fuel tank is used to keep weight down.

The F 900 XR’s design closely resembles the 9Cento concept revealed a year ago. The concept’s lines were also adopted to the new S 1000 XR.

As for the F 900 R roadster/standard/naked bike, its styling resembles the R 1250 R, albeit with more aggressive lines. It’s fuel tank is also moved to the front from underneath the seat, following the change first seen on the F 850 GS.

These two may be middleweights, but they follow BMW Motorrad’s move in equipping almost all models with high-end features (even the C 400-series scooters have TFT screens and keyless ignition). Hence these models have Road and Rain ride modes, ABS, keyless ignition and TFT screen.

You can spec’ them up further by adding two Pro ride modes, electronic suspension, ABS Pro, cornering lights and quickshifter (yes!).
