Can-Am proudly announced its return to the two-wheel segment during last month’s 2023 Club Bombardier Recreational Product (BRP) event.

  • Can-Am to begin manufacturing the Origin and Pulse electric motorcycle by 2024.
  • The Origin and Pulse signify Can-Am’s return to the motorcycle market.

At the time, the Canadian-based company showcased its first electric motorcycle, the Origin dual-sport and Pulse roadster. 

Unfortunately, while Can-Am revealed that both motorcycles would run on an all-new Rotax E-Power electric motor, the firm remained tight-lipped on the Origin and Pulse power, range and charging time.

Nevertheless, BRP quickly got things running as the company recently broke ground for a new EV-manufacturing plant in Queretaro, Mexico.

According to the firm, the new facility will primarily produce Can-Am’s electric two-wheeler range, including the Pulse and Origin. 

“We have set out to reclaim our motorcycle heritage by launching a lineup of electric two-wheel motorcycles, and we are gearing up to execute our plan.

“We look forward to producing the first electric Can-Am motorcycles for a new generation of enthusiasts,” said BRP Powersports Group President Sandy Scullion. 

Meanwhile, Can-Am aims to deliver the first batch of electric motorcycles to customers by 2024. 

Kawasaki arguably among the major motorcycle manufacturers pushing for electrification.

The Japanese firm  also went on to showcased its electric and hybrid two-wheelers at Suzuka 8 Hours. The hybrid looks somewhat like the Ninja while the electric looks much smaller and looks like the firm’s Z250.

At the time, there’s no words regarding the launch date but according to British Motorcyclist Federation (BMF), Team Green plans to launch its first electric range in November.

Also, BMF claimed Kawasaki’s upcoming motorcycle will be called the E2 and could produce a peak power of around 30hp. That puts the E2 around 14hp less than the Ninja Z400.

Interestingly, BMF also reports that there will be a fully faired version of the E2 and potentially will be called the E2-R albeit sharing the same peak power.

While Kawasaki is yet to release any further info on its upcoming E2 and E2-R electric motorcycle, the latest report looks encouraging from the marquee.

Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) has officially showcased the Japanese motorcycle company first electric motorcycle, the E01.

  • It features a 4.9kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor setup with 10.8HP and 30.2NM.
  • Yamaha claims a maximum range of at least 100KM and ability to hit speeds of 100KM/H.

The electric two-wheeler made its global appearance in January 2022 and was confirmed to make its way to Malaysia after the country was among the few selected to test out the motorcycle.

That said, Yamaha has already tested the E01 in Europe and Japan.

Nevertheless, we were given the opportunity to take a closer look at the E01 at the recently concluded Yamaha GenBlue Carnival, in Pantai Teluk Batik, Perak.

Notably, the Yamaha E01 sports proportions and dimensions similar to that of the Yamaha NMax scooter. But instead of a 155cc VVA-equipped single-cylinder and CVT box setup, the E01 features a that, according to Yamaha, is capable of generating 8.1kW (10.8HP) @ 5,000RPM and 30.2NM @ 1,950RPM.

Furthermore, the Yamaha E01 also offers a decent level of daily practicality thanks to the presence of a sizeable 23-litre under-seat storage bin.

Critically, as an urban scooter, the Yamaha E01 promises a maximum travel range of up to 100KM at least plus whilst also reaching speeds of 105km/h too. 

As for charging, there are three options available:

  • Conventional charger (home) – 6 hours to full
  • Fast charger (distributor) – 1 hour to 80 percent
  • Portable charger – 13 hours to full

Pricing and availability of the Yamaha E01 is yet to be announce but it is understood that the new electric motorcycle will be priced similar to Yamaha’s XMax 250 scooter.

Can-Am has officially unveiled its first motorcycles in 35 years with the launch of123 Can-Am Origin and Can-Am Pulse electric motorcycle.

The Canadian company first produced its motorcycles back in the 70s and 80s with motocross and off-road two-wheelers.

The company went down in 1987 before being revived by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) in 2006 which led to the brand manufacturing three-wheeled motorcycles and trikes.

However, as the world has shifted towards electrification, BRP announced its plan to revived Can-Am as a two-wheel electric maker, in March 2022.

At the time, the company teased four motorcycles, and six months on Can-Am has revealed the Origin and Pulse.

Based on the image shared, the Origin is a dual-sport electric motorcycle while the Pulse carries a roadster DNA with sportier bodywork.

Apart from the eye-catching design, the battery packs is also slimmer and blends perfectly underneath the “fuel tank” compared to other electric motorcycle available in the market.

That said, the Can-Am Origin presents the most unique design language, with its ADV styling puts it within the same segment as Zero’s FX. While the Pulse, offers a more urban-focused design and ergo’s puts it head-to-head with newly launched LiveWire Del-Mar.

Meanwhile, the Origin and Pulse is expected to be equipped with Rotax E-Power engine.

Indonesia is really picking up its pace in the electric motorcycle sector compared to other South East Asian countries.

  • Anubis CruiserCross is an electric-powered ADV bike from Baran Energy.
  • The ADV electric bike has claimed max speed of 158km/h. 

Indonesian EV Maker, Baran Energy has recently launched the new Anubis CruiserCross, an electric motorcycle with adventure bike elements.

Design wise, the Anubis CruiserCross looks something that came out of a sci-fi movie, but features interesting design language that combines minimalistic body panels that looks sharp and muscular.

The motorcycle also equipped with an ADV-style front beak, fork covers and battery casing that blends well with the bike’s silhouette.

Mechanically, the Anubis CruiserCross electric motor makes 46hp and 106Nm. Thanks to its 6.3kWh battery, Baran Energy claimed the bike has a max speed of 158km/h with 132km range.

That said, the bike’s range will reduced greatly if the Anubis CruiserCross is taken off-road.

Nonetheless, the bike is suspended by a USD fork at the front and monoshock setup at the rear. Braking is done by front and rear disc with spoke wheels wrapped in knobby tires.

Other notable features include:

  • storage compartment on the “fuel tank”

American electric motorcycle company Lightning Motorcycles is working on a new plug-in adventure bike to take on Energica’s Experia.

  • Lightning Dakar is the first electric plug-in off-road capable motorcycle.
  • Set to go head-to-head with Energica’s Experia tourer.

The company patent filing recently leaked in China and showcased the upcoming off-road focused ADV motorcycle bodywork.

The company’s founder and CEO, Richard Hatfield, submitted the application to the China National Intellectual Property Administration. Why China? This is because Lightning has a factory over there.

Despite the possibility of coming up against the Energica Experia, Lightning’s upcoming machine is more off-road oriented, which immediately distinguishes it from the Experia, which is fitted with 17-inch wheels.

Lightning also included the term Dakar in the filing, which is most likely to describe the bike’s design language.

Lightning made headlines in 2012 after claiming an electric land speed record of 350km/h with the 200hp LS-218 prototype.

The company proceeded to introduce the production version of the LS-218, named the Lightning Strike Sportster, in 2019, which is currently available for orders from USD19,998 (RM89.1k).

Nonetheless, the upcoming ADV boasts entirely different ergonomics thanks to a taller seat height, upright seating position, longer travel front suspension and rear absorbers.

The motorcycle also features wire-spoke wheels in 21-inch front and 18-inch rear compared to Energica’s 17″ road-biased alloy wheels.

The bike is also equipped with a tall, humped fuel tank, conventional ADV front beak, raised front mudguard and tall (but narrow) windscreen.

While there are no precise details on the performance, it is possible it makes the same 120hp as the 2019 Lightning Strike, with an engine and swingarm that appears identical to the sportsbike.

TVS-owned Norton Motorcycles is ready to kick-start its electrification program by announcing the ‘Zero Emission Norton’ project.

  • The Zero Emission Norton will take two and a half years.
  • Plans to design and manufacture electric motorcycles in the United Kingdom.

Norton is finally on the move two years after the brand was in a critical situation by unveiling the V4SV exotic superbike.

The momentous occasion marks the company’s new direction under TVS Motor Company.

In the latest announcement, Norton has revealed plans to design and manufacture electric motorcycles in the UK.

The new manufacturing plant will be in charge of race performance, lightweight and touring range.

Thanks to the government funding, it will be a joint effort between Norton and Delta Cosworth, which will assist the battery and other critical components to power the motorcycle.

Meanwhile, the University of Warwick – which helps develop the TT Zero Race machine – will take charge of modelling, toolchain development and battery technology.

According to Norton, the Zero Emission project is part of a 10-year product plan and supports UK’s mission to achieve a net-zero automotive future. The aim is to lift the UK is returning to being a global tech leader for motorcycles.

Triumph Motorcycles has announced that the company’s first electric prototype has completed its final testing and is set for the full reveal in July.

The TE-1 has officially completed its final stage of the testing process.

Developed in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering and the Warwick Manufacturing Group at the University of Warwick, the British marquee will unveil the TE-1 on 12 July 2022.

On that date, Triumph will show the bike and reveal the technical aspects of the machine, including the range and battery charging time.

However, most importantly, the full reveal of the working prototype will also mark the company’s intentions for the future.

The all-electric and two-wheel-drive (2WD) Robo Systems Ultra Bike is built to go off-road, traverse boulders, and wade into water.
