  • A BMW 1800cc Boxer engine cruiser is confirmed for 2020.

  • The news was confirmed by BMW Motorrad.

  • The prototype engine is now used as the powerplant for custom bikes.

It’s confirmed. A BMW 1800cc Boxer engine cruiser is coming in 2020. The news was confirmed by Timo Resch, Vice President Sales and Marketing for BMW Motorrad.

Resch made the statement during the Handbuilt Show in Austin, Texas where Revival Cycles showed off a custom bike called Birdcage which features an 1800cc Boxer engine.

While we revel at the Birdcage’s welded titanium frame, the built was actually contracted by BMW Motorrad to tease the new engine. The massive pushrod engine will be the platform for an upcoming cruiser in 2020.

The Birdcage was the second motorcycle to use the 1800cc engine, following the Departed R18 built by Japanese Custom Works Zon.

“We will also be showing a BMW Motorrad developed concept bike featuring this engine in the first half-year of 2019. BMW Motorrad will present a series production motorcycle with the Big Boxer for the Cruiser segment in the course of 2020,” said Resch.

An 1800cc, air-cooled, pushrod valve actuation engine surely means that the German manufacturer is taking aim at Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles. However, riders of the two brands are fiercely loyal so it’ll be interesting to see how BMW Motorrad can win them over.

  • Option 719 is part of the BMW Motorrad Spezial ex-factory customization program.

  • Option 719 is currently available for R nineT, K-Series and C-Series line-ups.

BMW Motorrad Auto Bavaria held a special preview for Option 719 last night. The special event was held in conjunction with their BMW Motorrad Fest.

Auto Bavaria unveiled four R nineT’s with various Option 719 paintjobs. A customer, Dato’ Ariffudin Mokthtar also took delivery of an R nineT Pure finished in Black Storm/Metallic Auburn.

It was appropriate to debut Option 719 on the R nineT series, since it was designed to be customized. It is perhaps high time to launch the program as the Option 719 has been around for some time.

Option 719 is part of the BMW Motorrad Spezial ex-factory customization program. Owners could specify the special options for their BMW motorcycles prior to them arriving at the showroom or order the parts later. Depending on model, customers could choose from a catalog full of components such as billet brake fluid reservoir caps, engine covers, hand levers and paint jobs.

Customization is carried out by BMW’s in-house artisans such as those who carry out pinstriping, polishing, billet machining, seat leather stitching and so forth.

Customizing one’s bike with Option 719 accessories also means that the bike’s warranty isn’t voided. Besides that, the customer is assured of work being carried out by trained personnel, hence his bike isn’t butchered.

Option 719 is currently available for the R nineT, K-Series tourers, and C-Series urban mobility (read: scooter) line-up, but there are plans to expand it to include the adventure (GS) and sport (S 1000 RR) series.

You may obtain more information about Option 719 by following the BMW Motorrad Spezial webpage.

Interested parties can view the bikes at BMW Motorrad Auto Bavaria. Please follow BMW Motorrad Malaysia’s Facebook page and BMW Motorrad Malaysia’s website for more information on BMW motorcycles.

  • A Brazilian magazine dug up the patent submission of the new BMW F 850 RS.

  • It closely resembles the 9Cento concept, with some differences.

  • BMW needs to fill the middleweight sport-tourer gap.

Remember the 9Cento concept? Looks like it will be applied to the new BMW F 850 RS, as Brazilian patent revealed.

The 9Cento concept drew lots of interest and many were hoping that BMW Motorrad put it into production. But the factory kept mum about it until the prototype was spotted undergoing road tests in the UK. BMW needs a midrange sport-tourer and the new 853cc parallel-Twin provides the perfect platform.

Now it looks like a reality. Brazilian motorcycle magazine Motor1 Bugmanaged to dig up BMW’s patent filing to the National Institute of Industrial Property, dated 2 April 2019. The files not only showed a rendering of the new bike but also the name “F 850 RS.”

The computer rendering shows a design which closely matches the 9Cento, albeit more practical for everyday riding, including a longer seat. It ought to be a great commuter compared to the likes of the R 1250 GS/GS Adventure and S 1000 XR sport-tourer.

Will it be launched at Intermot? Or EICMA? We will have to wait and see.

  • The trophy will award 30 top participants (BMW riders) in the rankings.

You may not have heard of this competition, but the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy continues in 2019 for the sixth season.

In this competition, top 30 participants in the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy (BMRT) rankings will be awarded trophies and prize money. There are also prizes for teams who win the title in their respective championships, besides categories such as “Best BMW Rider in Class” and “Newcomer of the Year.”

How does it work? Let’s take the Pirelli Malaysia Superbike Championship for example. The championship is classified as a “participant” in the BMRT series. The riders on BMW bikes in different categories are then ranked against other BMW riders in other series worldwide.

26 different championship classes in 21 international and national races are classified for the trophy in 2019. The number includes WorldSBK, Endurance World Championship, International Road Racing Championship (IRRC). New additions are the FIM European Superstock 1000 Cup and Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC). The ARRC added the 1000cc superbike class this year.

  • Starting at USD 16,999, owners could opt for different packages according to their needs.

  • The pricing looks like great value compared to other European supersport motorcycles.

Finally, we get an idea of how much the much-awaited 2019 BMW S 1000 RR will cost.

BMW Motorrad revealed the price at USD 16,999. However, that’s for the base model. As with all BMW motorcycles, there are different levels of “packages” to fit every rider’s fancy.

“Select” Package

For an extra USD 1,400, the package includes BMW’s DDC (Dynamic Damping Control) semi-active electronic suspension, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system and heated grips.

The bike now costs approximately USD 18,400.

“Race” Package

Top up another USD 1,600 (to the Select Package) and you get the “Race” package. It adds the “Ride Modes Pro” electronic suite which includes launch control, wheelie control, race modes, dynamic traction control, slide control, etc. etc. You will also receive a lithium-ion battery and forged aluminium wheels.

The bike now costs approximately USD 20,000.

“M” Package

For the ultimate built, get the “M” package and will receive carbon fibre wheels with everything else in place.

And finally, the price is now approximately USD 22,100.

We would like to add that you do get lots of goodies at USD 22,100, compared to other current European supersport models.

Of course, the pricing will be different when it arrives in Malaysia, but at least we have an inkling of how much we need to save for. Wished we started saving from when we were six-years-old…
